Chapter 2

Author: Skylar Blue
Before I could finish speaking, she suddenly raised her hand.

Two sharp slaps landed across my face. My ears rang, and my cheeks burned.

After hitting me and tearing into me, Sarah stood there like a victorious general.

Then she turned to shield the assistants behind her.

“Don’t be afraid, everyone. I may be a victim too, but I’m also at fault for failing to keep my husband in line. I’ll make sure you get justice!”

She pointed at me and shouted, “Daniel Cooper, tomorrow we’re doing a live-streamed paternity test! Let the whole country see how a billionaire CEO abuses his female employees!”

I watched them leave together.

It felt as if she had carved a piece out of my heart with her own hands. Cold wind swept through that hollow, carrying eight years of memories with it.

This time, I did not turn to my best friend to complain, as I had in my previous life.

I would not let myself be cornered again, not when it would only end with me dying for a crime I never committed.

But the next second, someone began pounding on my office door.

“Daniel Cooper! What kind of monster are you? Open the damn door!” William Lee’s furious roar made the door shake.

“You’re a man—if you did it, then own it! You got them pregnant, and now you’re refusing to take responsibility. There are plenty of guys out there who can’t even get a date, while you had eighteen women at once! How could you do this to Sarah?”

Just as I thought.

Sarah had gotten to him first and played the victim.

I forced myself to stay calm and called through the door, “William, what did Sarah tell you?”

“You’ve got the nerve to ask?” He spat on the other side of the door.

“Sarah cried until her eyes were swollen! Eighteen pregnant women are waiting for you in the conference room to take responsibility, and you still call yourself a man?”

“Sarah sent me to get a sample of your hair for the test!”

His indignant accusations sent a cold sweat down my back.

After the paternity report came out in my previous life, he kicked me so hard that he broke eight of my ribs.

William was a champion kickboxer for fifteen years. I would not stand a chance against him.

I could not let him get hold of my hair.

I quickly steadied myself and lied through the door. “William! I... I think I might have the flu. I’m terribly dizzy, and I don’t want to pass it to you! Whatever it is, we can talk another day. Just go home for now!”

“Cut the crap!” William pounded on the door again. “You can hide today, but you can’t hide forever! You cowardly bastard. You did it, but you won’t own it!

“I’m getting your hair for that test today, one way or another!”

Sweat broke out across my palms. “William, trust me. There’s a real misunderstanding here! I swear I never did anything with any of them!”

“A misunderstanding?” William sneered from outside the door.

“Eighteen pregnant women all just happened to misunderstand you? Daniel Cooper, you can’t even be bothered to make your lies believable!”

He slammed his foot against the door, making my ears ring. “If you didn’t do it, then take the test and get it over with! The more you hide, the guiltier you look!”

“Just let me explain...”

“Explain my ass!” He kicked the door again. “A real man owns up to what he’s done. Acting like a coward only makes the rest of us look bad!”

Each deafening blow against the door pounded against my chest like a drumbeat.

Panic overtook me. I scrambled to drag the desk beside me over to block the door.

I could not let him get inside.

Absolutely not.

But just as I dragged the desk in front of the door, I heard a soft click.

“Friends? Is that how you treat a friend? You sleep with my wife, spend my money, then try to take everything I own?“When your mother was seriously ill, who paid her medical bills? When your company went bankrupt, who transferred you money in the middle of the night? When debt collectors came after you, who hid you in his own home?”I threw him to the ground. Without another look at either of them, I turned and nodded to the police officer who had arrived.“Officer, I’ll leave the rest to the law.”With sirens blaring, Sarah and William were led into police cars.Just as the door was closing, Sarah suddenly began pounding against the window like a madwoman, hurling her most vicious curse at me.“Daniel Cooper! You cold-blooded monster are destined to die alone! I curse you to a miserable death!”I stood where I was and let her curse fade into the wind.At last, the wasteland inside me had begun to clear.Three months later, the court handed down its verdict.Sarah was sentenced to tw

William flew into a rage. “Bitch! You were the one who came onto me first! You said you were lonely and desperate for someone to keep you warm!”“You’re lying!” Sarah shrieked hysterically. “You were the one who said Daniel was always too busy with work to care about me, that he didn’t deserve everything he had! You said we should teach him a lesson!”Then she turned toward me, tears shimmering in her eyes. Tears had left her makeup smeared and streaked across her face.“Daniel, do you remember? Last year, you promised to spend my birthday with me, but you ended up working at the office until dawn again... I was so lonely... He took advantage of me when I was vulnerable...”She cried so hard she could barely catch her breath, as though she had suffered some enormous injustice.“I know your business has always mattered more to you than my feelings... but I’m your wife...”In my previous life, perhaps her words would have made me ache with guilt. But now, I found them laughable.I slowl

The first clip was crystal-clear security footage from a hotel corridor. The man wore a cap and a mask, but the distinctive old scar on William’s left wrist was unmistakable. The second was an audio recording—a hushed conversation between Sarah and William.[...Did you give him enough? Don’t let him wake up halfway through.][Relax. It’s enough to keep him asleep until noon tomorrow. Give me the phone. I’ll arrange a meeting with that new assistant...][William, next time you go, remember to wear his gray suit. You’ll look more like him from behind...][Do we still have enough sperm samples? If not, we’ll have to figure something out...]The recording was short, but its implications were explosive.“No! It’s fabricated! It’s all fake!” Sarah screamed hysterically. She tried to rush forward and snatch my phone, but security stopped her.William’s face turned ashen. He instinctively took a step back. The room descended into complete chaos.Reporters went wild, shoving their way forward

I looked up. The panicked, evasive man I had been was gone. My gaze was sharp as a blade as it swept slowly across the room.I picked up the divorce agreement and, before everyone’s stunned eyes, tore it into pieces. The white scraps fluttered down like an unexpected snowfall. The entire room erupted.“Daniel Cooper! What are you doing?”Sarah shot to her feet with a shriek.William immediately stepped forward, every muscle tense as he glared at me, as though he were about to attack.I ignored them and faced the countless cameras before me as I spoke slowly.“Have you had enough of this performance?“Did you really think you could keep playing me like a fool until you had drained every last bit of value from me?”The words struck like a thunderclap, leaving everyone frozen in shock.Sarah’s expression changed dramatically, though she forced herself to remain calm. “You... you’ve lost your mind! What nonsense are you talking about?”“Lost my mind?” I let out a cold laugh. “Sarah, that

I took a deep breath.“Stop arguing... All of you, stop... I... I admit it...”The hospital room fell silent. Everyone strained to listen, while every camera remained trained on me.“Things have reached this point... I have no way to defend myself. I’m willing... willing to take full responsibility.”“Responsibility? How are you going to do that?” one assistant’s father shouted, his eyes red.“We can discuss the details at a press conference. I promise I’ll give everyone a solution you can accept.” I looked at them with apparent sincerity.“I only ask... that you give me a chance to make a public apology, so this matter... can finally be put to rest.”The assistants’ families exchanged looks, and some of their anger seemed to fade. After a brief stunned pause, Sarah addressed the crowd through her tears.“Although he has made an unforgivable mistake, he is... at least willing to take responsibility.”“I, Sarah White, promise all of you this: even though I’m a victim too, I will not aba

I pulled out my phone, just about to test my theory. Then the hospital room door burst open.A huge crowd surged inside.“Daniel Cooper! You heartless bastard! Give my daughter back her dignity!”“My daughter is only twenty-three! You’ve destroyed her future! You’re going to give us an explanation today!”“You disgusting excuse for a human being! You dress like a respectable man, but everything you do is vile!”“You got her pregnant and think you can just walk away? The world doesn’t work that way! If you don’t give us an answer we can accept today, we’ll kill you even if it costs us our lives!”Their curses and sobs wove into a suffocating net, trapping me at its center. At that moment, a young doctor squeezed through the crowd and tried to restore order.“Everyone, please calm down. This is a hospital. The patient is seriously injured and needs to rest...”“Doctor, did that pathetic act fool you too? Look at this!”The middle-aged man at the front pulled out a thick stack of printed
