Chapter 3

Author: Crybaby
Things seemed to come to an end after I called off the engagement. But I knew better. This was far from over.

As long as Vaughn Corporation still needed Hale Corporation's support, Harold and Marissa would never agree to Sienna breaking off the engagement, much less to her marrying a foreigner. And that was precisely why Sienna had ultimately given in and married me in my previous life.

On top of that, Marissa, aware of my deep feelings for Sienna, had constantly tried to persuade me back then.

I had personally witnessed Sienna breaking up with Jacques. He never understood why love couldn't keep them together. He tried desperately to hold on, but was beaten up by a group of men.

Sienna blamed me for it. She held me fully responsible, though I knew nothing about the incident at the time.

It was all Harold's doing. That was his way of threatening Jacques to leave the country and give up on Sienna.

I still remembered the look in Sienna's eyes the day Jacques left. It was full of resentment and indignation. I once thought that was just my imagination, but it turned out to be the truest reflection of her heart.

After that, she calmed down, as if her previous resistance had never happened. She began to play the part of an ordinary, dutiful wife.

Having been fooled once, when Marissa approached me again, I refused.

I knew Vaughn Corporation needed help from Hale Corporation too much to simply give up. So, I reassured Marissa, "There's a vast difference between marriage and romance. Besides, there's also the cultural difference between them to consider.

"Why not let them be? When daily life wears down their passion, they'll naturally drift apart. The more we oppose them now, the stronger their bond becomes. It's better to let things take their course."

"You're right. I'm overthinking things," Marissa replied.

It went without saying that she didn't want to strain her relationship with her daughter. When she heard my words, she easily assumed I would wait until Sienna and Jacques parted ways.

And that was exactly what I did in my past life.

But why should I? I was the heir to Hale Corporation! Why should I marry a woman whose heart belonged to someone else? But the Vaughns were as self-assured as always.

Marissa patted me on the shoulder and said, "You're so understanding. No wonder I've always treated you like my own son."

Her own son? Hah! Had I not been the heir of Hale Corporation, I wonder if she'd say the same.

In my past life, when Sienna did what she had done, Marissa had never once mentioned anything about treating me like her own son. In fact, she'd never even acknowledge the favors our family had done for theirs.

Until the very end, Sienna believed my family had insisted on the marriage only because we needed their help.

In my past life, I had willingly degraded myself to be with her, but not this time.

In the five years that I'd spent waiting for her, I had several other women of similar social standing express their feelings for me.

Heather Sullivan, the daughter of my mother's close friend, Ivy Rhodes, had once confessed her feelings to me. Heather was also my junior at university.

Bound by my engagement, I had always turned her down, though inwardly I admired her cheerful and straightforward nature.

As soon as Heather heard about the engagement being ended, she rushed straight to my home. She was still slightly out of breath from running when she arrived.

The moment she saw me, she dashed over and hugged me tightly. "Vincent, is it finally my turn now?"

The last time she confessed to me, she had said that she would wait for me. She would get in line, and if one day, Sienna and I ever broke up, I should consider her first.

"Yes, Heather. It's your turn now. Will you marry me?"

She hung her head low without answering. I had thought that she would turn me down.

"If you feel that it's too rushed, we can—"

She rose on her toes and kissed me before I could even finish. It was a long moment before she pulled away. "Yes."

Her eyes were slightly red, and a wave of guilt washed over me. I had made her wait far too long.

It was only then that I realized I had long stopped loving Sienna. Waiting for her was just a habit, an obsession that I had been holding on to. Only after everything had happened did I finally come to see that my feelings had long moved on.

My mother was delighted to see Heather and me ending up together.

After both families met, discussions quickly moved toward wedding arrangements.

As I lounged on the couch reviewing documents, Heather lay on my lap, flipping through a bridal magazine to pick out her wedding dress.

Although both families initially suggested holding the wedding after Heather graduated, she firmly objected.

"I don't want to make Vincent wait any longer, and I don't want to wait any more, either. All I want is to marry him. Besides, getting married won't stop me from finishing my studies."

Seeing how determined she was, both our parents reluctantly agreed.

On the day of our wedding, many guests showed up. But the Vaughns weren't among them.

But just as Heather and I were about to exchange vows and pledge our lives to each other, the doors of the banquet hall suddenly burst open.

Sienna, also dressed in a wedding gown, walked right up to me.

"If I told you that I want to marry you now, Vincent, would you still take me as your wife?"

The investigation into Vaughn Corporation concluded swiftly, though we paid little attention to the outcome. After the press conference, apologies flooded various online platforms. Someone had even posted photos of me dropping Heather off at campus recently, and this time, the comment section was filled with nothing but praise. Nonetheless, none of it affected us anymore, and we returned to our peaceful life.Heather graduated soon after. As she had a younger brother to take over her family's business, she was free to pursue a career she loved, one that sent her traveling all over the country. Our only source of stress became the constant hints from both our parents about wanting grandchildren. My phone lit up with another call from my mother."Mom, Heather's coming home today. I need to pick her up soon. Can we talk later?" I said."I just wanted to let you know that the verdict on the Vaughn family is out," she replied. After months of legal proceedings, the Vaughn family'

The long-delayed press conference finally took place. As news about Vaughn Corporation and Hale Corporation had been spreading like wildfire online recently, numerous media outlets showed up.As soon as the conference began, a reporter asked, "Ms. Vaughn, are you being coerced into holding this press conference now?"Sienna replied expressionlessly, "No. I simply want to tell the truth. Mr. Hale and I called off our engagement long ago, and I have since been in a relationship with someone else. I urge everyone not to spread misinformation any further."Mr. Hale and Ms. Sullivan are already married. These rumors have caused significant harm to all of us. Should such false claims continue to circulate, we will not hesitate to pursue legal action."Lawyers from Hale Corporation then presented evidence we had gathered, both from our own investigation and from what Sienna had provided, detailing how the rumors were orchestrated. The room instantly erupted in murmurs.Another journali

By the time we returned from our trip, Sienna still hadn't issued any clarification on the rumors.Hale Corporation officially terminated its partnership with Vaughn Corporation and filed a claim for damages.I heard from my mom that Harold and Marissa had personally come to our house to plead for mercy and ask to see me. They even complained to my parents, but they were firmly turned away. Ever since I called off the engagement with Sienna, the only time the Vaughns reached out was when they needed the Hale family's help. They truly only showed up when they needed something, and disappeared just as quickly once they got it.But throughout it all, Sienna never once appeared. The rumors gradually died down, and I personally drove Heather to campus. People there were already starting to question the validity of the earlier accusations.Just when I thought the storm had finally passed, someone anonymously posted a photo online. It was a picture of Heather and me from my university

Sienna eventually left with a dark expression on her face. I knew that she still couldn't let go of Jacques. Everything she had done to me was merely for the sake of Vaughn Corporation. However, the trending topic wasn't taken down. Instead, more and more information was leaked and surged to the top of the trending list. In no time, Heather became the target of public scorn. They labeled her a scheming social climber who stole someone else's partner. When I called Sienna again, she sounded perfunctory."I'm abroad right now. There's an urgent issue with the company's overseas operations that I need to handle. I can post a clarification online, but a press conference will have to wait."It's not that I don't want to clear things up. But who do you think you are? I don't want to be tied to you. I have a boyfriend, you know?"After that, she stopped answering my calls and replying to messages altogether. I couldn't even manage to get hold of Harold and Marissa. It was clear the

That very night, a trending topic shot to the top of the trending list.#HeatherSullivanTheHomeWreckerThere was no doubt who was behind it.When the call connected, Sienna's voice came through. "What's wrong? Having regrets already?"Even through the phone, I could picture her smug expression."What are you up to?""As long as you help Vaughn Corporation, I'll hold a press conference and clarify everything myself. Otherwise, Heather can forget about ever clearing her name as a homewrecker."Before I could say another word, Sienna ended the call. She had always been ruthless, both to others and even more so to herself. Only someone like her would resort to a move that wounded her as much as it hurt others.Heather's eyes were red, but she insisted and said, "It's okay. The truth will eventually resurface. All that matters is that you know I'm innocent."I wrapped my arms around her and pulled her into my embrace. "I won't let her tarnish your name. Trust me. I'll handle this

Before I could respond, Sienna grabbed my wrist and tried to pull me away. Some guests in the crowd had already stood up, recording the scene with their phones.I shook her hand off sharply. Sienna never learned to consider others' feelings. When she didn't want me, she cast me aside like trash. Now that she'd decided she wanted me back, she expected me to come running. Did she really think it would be that easy?"I don't love you anymore, Sienna. Please leave. The one I'm marrying today is Heather.""You liar! You've waited for me for five years! How can you just stop loving me like that?"Her words only struck me as absurd."You were the one who gave up on me first. Why should I wait around for you to come back? Who do you think you are, Sienna? What gives you the right to demand that from me?""Is it because of this woman? Is it because of her that you gave up on me and Vaughn Corporation?"Hah! So it all came down to Vaughn Corporation after all. I lowered my head and g
