LOGINLena did not sleep.
How could she sleep when she knew exact date world would end?
August 9, 2026. Three years, two months, twenty-eight days from today. She counted it hundred times staring at ceiling. Three years to prepare. Three years to become someone who would not die on bridge.
Headline still glowed on phone screen in dark.
MYSTERIOUS FEVER REPORTED IN QUEENS - DOCTORS BAFFLED - 3 CASES ISOLATED.
In past life, she scrolled past it. Laughed with roommate Maya about it. Just flu. Government said stay calm.
Maya died second wave. Choking blood in kitchen while Lena held her helpless.
Lena stood. Legs shook, but mind was razor sharp. Survivor mind earned after three years hell.
First rule learned in apocalypse: no one will save you except you.
She pulled notebook from college. Flipped to blank page and wrote big capitals.
REBORN PLAN - BEFORE APOCALYPSE.
Three columns.
MONEY. SUPPLIES. ETHAN.
Money. Old life, she was broke. Freelance designer making three thousand a month, rent two thousand. No savings. In apocalypse, money became useless paper burning in streets. Before apocalypse, money was power. Could buy guns, food, bunker, land.
She knew things from future. Knew which stocks would crash 2024. Knew which vaccine companies would fail. Knew Bitcoin would spike 2024 then crash 2025. Never paid attention to lottery. But knew enough to profit if careful.
She opened laptop, cracked screen. Logged into bank, fingers shaking. Balance: $842.16.
Not enough to survive end. Not enough for one good gun.
Need start small. Sell everything not needed. Looked around apartment. Clothes, old camera worth two hundred, guitar never learned, designer bags bought sale trying feel rich.
Sell all. Become minimal. Survival needs only.
Second column. SUPPLIES.
She wrote fast, messy, urgent, almost unreadable.
Water filter, canned food for 5 years, rice, antibiotics, guns, ammo, solar panels, gas masks, first aid kits, vitamins, seeds, knives, backpacks, thermal clothes, fuel, batteries, radio, water tanks.
And location. Could not stay Manhattan. Manhattan became death trap. Bridges blown by military to stop spread. Subways flooded with infected. Streets filled fire and raiders. Need land. Upstate. Far from city. High ground. Well water and forest. She remembered place Ethan once mentioned, hunting lodge family owned in Catskills. Abandoned years. Stone walls. Safe. Hidden from world.
She would find it. Buy it if possible.
Third column. ETHAN.
Pen stopped over name. Ink bled.
Ethan Cross.
CEO Cross Industries. Thirty-two. Billionaire. Magazine cover. Dominant, ruthless, untouchable, cold to everyone. Old timeline, never met him until world ended. He was at charity gala 2023 she waitressed for extra cash. He didn't look at her. Looked through her like glass.
This timeline, she knew everything about him intimately. Birthday April 7, peanut allergy, scar left shoulder from car accident at twelve, mother died cancer when fifteen, hatred for father who cheated. Learned all during three years together, at night, in makeshift bunker bed, whispering stories to stay alive and human when world outside dead.
But now, to him, she was nobody. Girl tiny apartment with $842.
How make billionaire fall in love before world ends so he will believe world is ending? How?
She had to become someone worthy standing next to him. Not weak Lena crying over rent. Strong Lena. Brave Lena. Lena who survived three years apocalypse and killed infected bare hands to protect him.
Phone rang. Loud, making jump, drop pen floor.
Unknown number. New York code.
She answered, voice hoarse.
"Is this Lena Carter?" Man voice, professional crisp.
"Yes? Speaking."
"This is Cross Industries recruitment. You applied junior designer position three weeks ago online. Mr. Cross office would like invite for interview tomorrow 9 AM at Cross Tower. Floor 42. Bring portfolio."
Lena froze. Heart stopped then hammered wild.
She applied? Yes. Three weeks ago. Old life before death. Forgot completely. Applied hundred places desperate.
Cross Industries. Ethan empire.
Tomorrow. 9 AM.
She would see Ethan tomorrow. Three years earlier than before. Alive. In expensive suit. Not covered blood and ash on bridge dying.
Hands shook so hard phone almost fell.
"Hello? Miss Carter? Still there? Want slot? Many candidates."
"Yes," whispered, then louder, forcing strength into voice learned in apocalypse, survivor voice. "Yes, will be there. 9 AM. Thank you very much for call."
Hung up. Phone clattered to desk loud.
She looked reflection in dark window. Hair messy, eyes red, wearing old t-shirt stain front.
No. Not like this. Not if she wanted him to see her, really see her soul.
She needed become someone else in twelve hours. Complete transformation.
She opened closet. Pulled only blazer owned. Black. Cheap but clean. Only good thing she had.
She would wash hair now. Borrow makeup from Maya next door. Iron blazer perfectly. Look like woman who knew future and wasn't afraid to face end.
She would walk into Cross Tower tomorrow and look Ethan Cross in eye and make him remember soul even if mind didn't. Make heart recognize hers.
Because she died in his arms once. Watched him die with her on bridge.
Refused let happen again, not ever in any life.
She picked pen again and under ETHAN wrote one line, pressing hard paper tore.
Make him believe me. Make him love me again. Save him this time no matter cost.
Outside, sirens wailed far Queens. First fever cases taken hospital ambulances fast. No one knew what meant yet.
But she knew. Remembered every siren before end of everything.
Three years. Only three years left now.
Clock started now and she would not waste single second again ever in this life. She closed notebook tight. Her decision was final and absolute forever. She would turn tiny savings into fortress. She would make Ethan Cross notice her tomorrow morning interview. And she would rewrite their ending together completely. No more dying alone in cold ash and endless fear. Only fighting and living and loving again forever together this time with him always and safely protected together.
To be continued...
"Ethan!"Lena screamed it.Her voice bounced off the metal walls.Nothing. No answer. He was just... gone. One second his hand was almost in hers. The next second, empty air.Daniel ran to where Ethan had been standing. "Don't! Don't touch the floor!"Lena froze mid-step.A thin circle of silver light had bloomed under her feet. It pulsed. Once. Then it was gone, like it was never there. The older Lena was staring at that spot, her face grey."He was taken.""By what?" Lena snapped. "By what? Tell me!""The system.""Then get him back! You know how this place works, get him back!"The older woman shook her head slowly."You don't get it. Ethan wasn't taken because he was weak, Lena."She turned and looked at the seventh door."He was taken because he's the key."_CLICK._A loud, heavy metallic click echoed through the whole chamber. The seventh door had unlocked itself.Lena didn't think. She just started walking toward it.Daniel grabbed her shoulder. "Wait. Lena, wait.""My husband
7.The countdown didn't stop.Lena couldn't breathe. The name on the screen was still there, burning white.ANCHOR: MAYA CARTERDaniel's voice cracked beside her. "Maya Carter?"Lena shook her head. No. No, that was wrong."That's not her name."Everyone turned to look at her.She had to force the words out."Maya's last name was Bennett. It's always been Bennett."Ethan's jaw tightened. His eyes never left the screen."Then why the hell is the system calling her Carter?""I don't know," Lena whispered. "I swear I don't know."6.The screen glitched.A photo popped up.Lena's stomach dropped. It was her old apartment.May 12, 2023.Maya by the kitchen window, holding that chipped blue mug she always stole."I remember that morning," Lena said. Her voice sounded far away, even to her.Daniel moved closer. "What happened that morning?"Lena stared at the photo like it might disappear."She came home around eight. She was late for work, she was pissed about traffic. She brought coffee. T
The laughter stopped.Mid-laugh, cut off, like a tape stopped.Silence returned to the chamber, so heavy and absolute that Lena could hear her own heart hammering and Ethan's ragged breathing. For several seconds, nobody moved. Nobody dared to breathe.Lena stared at the seventh door.It was still opening. On its own. No hands touching it.Slowly. Painfully. Inch by inch, as if the darkness behind it was heavy and pushing through.Beyond it was not another room. Not a lab, not a corridor. It was darkness. Not ordinary darkness that light can fill. This was the kind of darkness that ate light. The blue glow from the memory core seemed to disappear, to be swallowed, whenever it reached the doorway.Ethan tightened his grip on Lena's hand so hard her knuckles went white."Don't go near it," he whispered, his voice raw. "Lena, whatever you do, don't go near that door."Lena looked at him, her eyes wide, tears drying on her cheeks. "You said we were never supposed to open it. Why? Tell me
The machines screamed. Not an alarm. A scream - a high, electronic shriek of a thousand hard drives spinning up at once, so loud Lena could barely hear her own thoughts. She pressed her hands over her ears.Seven versions of her stood around the chamber, each frozen beneath a different beam of white light that had come from nowhere. Trapped. Like specimens. And Ethan stood at the center. Alone. His eyes were silver. Not glowing bright like Daniel's had. Not normal brown either. Just... silver enough to make Lena's heart stop dead in her chest. A thin ring of silver around his pupils, spreading."Ethan?" Her voice was small under the screaming. He didn't answer. He just stared straight ahead, at nothing.Daniel stepped forward quickly and put a hand out to stop her."Don't touch him."Lena turned on him sharply, panic making her angry. "What did you do to him? What did you do?!""Nothing," Daniel said, his face pale in the white light."Then why is he like this? Why does he look like—
"I remember everything."Daniel's voice echoed through the enormous underground chamber, bouncing off metal and concrete and a thousand dead machines.Lena stared at him, her hand still clutching Ethan's.The seven figures remained motionless behind their open doors far below. Seven versions of her. Seven identical faces staring up at the platform. Seven silver marks glowing faintly in the dark, like eyes.Ethan slowly raised his weapon, his arm tight against Lena, pointing it straight at Daniel's chest."Daniel, stay where you are. Don't come any closer."Daniel ignored him completely. His silver eyes remained locked on Lena, and there was something terrible in them - pity and fear and guilt all at once."You shouldn't have come this far, Lena," he said quietly. "You were supposed to stop at Version Seven. Eight was never meant to wake up."Lena stepped forward, even though Ethan tried to hold her back. "You said you remembered everything.""I do.""Then tell me the truth," she said,
Lena fell. There was no floor. No walls. No up or down. Just endless black and the roar of air rushing past her ears, tearing her hair back. She didn't even have time to scream. Then something grabbed her wrist.Hard. Real. Flesh and bone and desperate strength."LENA!"She looked up, gasping, hair whipping across her face.Ethan.Not the silver-eyed copy from the hospital. Not the clean-suited stranger from the apartment. The _real_ Ethan. His face was bruised, a cut on his cheekbone, his clothes covered in gray dust and grime as if he'd been digging himself out of rubble. But his eyes - those dark, warm, worried eyes that had always found hers in a crowd - were unmistakable. They were _his_."Ethan!" She cried his name like it was air.He pulled her toward him with both arms, yanking her onto something solid. For a moment, neither of them spoke. She just held onto him, fists clenched in his shirt, breathing him in - dust and sweat and real, alive Ethan."You're real," she whispered
