LOGINPrivate elevator silent.
Lena watched numbers climb. 10, 20, 30, 42. Each floor like traveling through time. From death to life.
Doors opened directly into Ethan office. No assistants. Private entrance only he used.
He stood by window, back to her, looking at city.
She stepped out, doors closed behind.
He didn't turn.
"You have three minutes now," he said, voice cold but tighter. "Not five. Explain scar. Real explanation. No crazy time travel."
Lena walked closer behind him. She could smell his cologne. Same one from bunker.
"Do you believe deja vu?" she asked quietly.
He turned then. Grey eyes locked hers. Closer now, she saw tired lines, stress he hid.
"I don't believe anything I can't control," he said.
"Then you won't believe me," Lena said. "But I tell you anyway. Because I died loving you, and I came back. That's truth."
He stared, jaw tight.
"My name Lena Carter. I was reborn yesterday. Before yesterday, I died on bridge with you. May 15, 2026. Horde behind, river below. You held me. You said we go together. Then white light."
Ethan face unreadable. But didn't call security again.
"And you expect me believe you remember future?" he said slowly.
"I remember everything that will happen," Lena said, stepping closer desperate. "Fever Queens now not flu. Virus HNV-1. Government say controlled. Not. By July, hospitals full. By August, military locks city. By September, power fails. By October, world you know ends."
Ethan eyes narrowed. "You could have read conspiracy forums."
"Your lodge," Lena continued. "Catskills. 42.3319 north, 74.1456 west. Stone house, green roof, well dried 2015, you tried fix. Fireplace broken father broke drunk 2008. You never repaired because hate him. You keep photo mother hidden drawer desk, not displayed, because hurts."
Ethan went completely still. Lodge location not public. Nowhere online. Only family knew.
"How," he whispered low dangerous.
"You told me," Lena whispered back tears. "During storm, first winter apocalypse, we hid there. You showed me. You cried first time telling about mother. You never cry, Ethan. But you cried that night and I held you."
Silence heavy.
Ethan walked desk, opened drawer, pulled small framed photo face down. Turned over. Woman kind eyes similar grey.
He looked Lena, eyes not cold, confused shaken.
"No one knows about this photo," he said. "Not even assistant. I keep face down."
"I know," Lena soft. "You said she would have liked me."
Ethan sat slowly, legs weak. Ran hand through hair, breaking perfect CEO image.
"This insane," he muttered. "You can't know that."
"I know more," Lena said kneeling front desk eye level. "You will invest solar company SunVolt next month lose twelve million because fails. Father will call next week asking money and you refuse and he threaten press. You have nightmares about car accident killed college girlfriend Sarah 2014, you never told anyone."
Ethan head snapped up eyes wide almost fear.
"Stop," he said sharp. "Stop."
Sarah. No one knew Sarah. Buried deep.
Lena reached across desk not touching but close.
"I am not stalker. Not crazy," she said voice shaking but strong. "I am girl who loved you at end world. Died in your arms. Got second chance to save you before apocalypse starts. You can think insane throw out again. But in three years when fever spreads and you remember my words on bridge, you will wish you listened."
Ethan stared her hand near his. Fingers small nails chipped not manicured like women chased him.
First time in ten years, Ethan felt something uncontrollable.
Like he knew her hands and voice.
"Why me?" he whispered almost vulnerable. "Why come back for me? I'm not good man. Ruthless. Cold."
Lena smiled through tears first real smile since rebirth.
"Because you are good man when world ends," she said. "Because you saved fifty people, protected them, held me when scared, and died with me when you could have lived."
Ethan stood again walked window back to her needing distance think.
Outside city was normal. Hard to believe apocalypse was coming.
But girl behind knew things no one could know. Lodge coordinates. Photo face down. Sarah.
Sarah name he never said aloud since funeral.
He turned.
"If what you say true," he said slowly testing, "prove it. Tell me something will happen tomorrow that I can verify. Not private memory. Future event."
Lena thought fast. Future memory messy but some clear.
"Tomorrow," she said. "Tomorrow 2:13 PM earthquake small 4.2 magnitude New Jersey felt Manhattan. News say rare no damage. Everyone talk office. And stock market will drop 200 points because fever fear even though government says contained."
Ethan stared memorizing.
"If that happens tomorrow exactly like you say," he said, "I will see you again. If not you never come near me or company again. Understand? Disappear forever."
Lena nodded standing.
"And you will hire me?" she asked trying weak joke.
"No," he said but almost smile ghost. "But I won't have you arrested. Yet."
He walked private elevator pressed button.
"Margaret escort you out back way. No security this time."
Lena walked elevator then stopped turned.
"Ethan," she said using name one more time.
He looked.
"In future you hate when people call you Mr. Cross private. You said makes you feel alone."
Ethan froze.
Elevator doors opened.
Lena stepped in tears falling again but different now hope.
Doors closed.
Ethan stood alone office staring photo mother face up now heart pounding like hadn't felt since Sarah died.
He pulled phone called Margaret.
"Track earthquake reports tomorrow. And pull SunVolt file. Cancel it immediately."
Outside Lena stepped sunlight Manhattan three years before end and first time since dying, felt alive.
Tomorrow would prove she not crazy.
She walked away tower not knowing Ethan watched her from window above unable look away until she disappeared crowd.
He touched shoulder scar.
And whispered "Lena" testing name like memory returning.
She walked faster, smiling through tears, planning supplies, because now he might believe her.
To be continued....
"Ethan!"Lena screamed it.Her voice bounced off the metal walls.Nothing. No answer. He was just... gone. One second his hand was almost in hers. The next second, empty air.Daniel ran to where Ethan had been standing. "Don't! Don't touch the floor!"Lena froze mid-step.A thin circle of silver light had bloomed under her feet. It pulsed. Once. Then it was gone, like it was never there. The older Lena was staring at that spot, her face grey."He was taken.""By what?" Lena snapped. "By what? Tell me!""The system.""Then get him back! You know how this place works, get him back!"The older woman shook her head slowly."You don't get it. Ethan wasn't taken because he was weak, Lena."She turned and looked at the seventh door."He was taken because he's the key."_CLICK._A loud, heavy metallic click echoed through the whole chamber. The seventh door had unlocked itself.Lena didn't think. She just started walking toward it.Daniel grabbed her shoulder. "Wait. Lena, wait.""My husband
7.The countdown didn't stop.Lena couldn't breathe. The name on the screen was still there, burning white.ANCHOR: MAYA CARTERDaniel's voice cracked beside her. "Maya Carter?"Lena shook her head. No. No, that was wrong."That's not her name."Everyone turned to look at her.She had to force the words out."Maya's last name was Bennett. It's always been Bennett."Ethan's jaw tightened. His eyes never left the screen."Then why the hell is the system calling her Carter?""I don't know," Lena whispered. "I swear I don't know."6.The screen glitched.A photo popped up.Lena's stomach dropped. It was her old apartment.May 12, 2023.Maya by the kitchen window, holding that chipped blue mug she always stole."I remember that morning," Lena said. Her voice sounded far away, even to her.Daniel moved closer. "What happened that morning?"Lena stared at the photo like it might disappear."She came home around eight. She was late for work, she was pissed about traffic. She brought coffee. T
The laughter stopped.Mid-laugh, cut off, like a tape stopped.Silence returned to the chamber, so heavy and absolute that Lena could hear her own heart hammering and Ethan's ragged breathing. For several seconds, nobody moved. Nobody dared to breathe.Lena stared at the seventh door.It was still opening. On its own. No hands touching it.Slowly. Painfully. Inch by inch, as if the darkness behind it was heavy and pushing through.Beyond it was not another room. Not a lab, not a corridor. It was darkness. Not ordinary darkness that light can fill. This was the kind of darkness that ate light. The blue glow from the memory core seemed to disappear, to be swallowed, whenever it reached the doorway.Ethan tightened his grip on Lena's hand so hard her knuckles went white."Don't go near it," he whispered, his voice raw. "Lena, whatever you do, don't go near that door."Lena looked at him, her eyes wide, tears drying on her cheeks. "You said we were never supposed to open it. Why? Tell me
The machines screamed. Not an alarm. A scream - a high, electronic shriek of a thousand hard drives spinning up at once, so loud Lena could barely hear her own thoughts. She pressed her hands over her ears.Seven versions of her stood around the chamber, each frozen beneath a different beam of white light that had come from nowhere. Trapped. Like specimens. And Ethan stood at the center. Alone. His eyes were silver. Not glowing bright like Daniel's had. Not normal brown either. Just... silver enough to make Lena's heart stop dead in her chest. A thin ring of silver around his pupils, spreading."Ethan?" Her voice was small under the screaming. He didn't answer. He just stared straight ahead, at nothing.Daniel stepped forward quickly and put a hand out to stop her."Don't touch him."Lena turned on him sharply, panic making her angry. "What did you do to him? What did you do?!""Nothing," Daniel said, his face pale in the white light."Then why is he like this? Why does he look like—
"I remember everything."Daniel's voice echoed through the enormous underground chamber, bouncing off metal and concrete and a thousand dead machines.Lena stared at him, her hand still clutching Ethan's.The seven figures remained motionless behind their open doors far below. Seven versions of her. Seven identical faces staring up at the platform. Seven silver marks glowing faintly in the dark, like eyes.Ethan slowly raised his weapon, his arm tight against Lena, pointing it straight at Daniel's chest."Daniel, stay where you are. Don't come any closer."Daniel ignored him completely. His silver eyes remained locked on Lena, and there was something terrible in them - pity and fear and guilt all at once."You shouldn't have come this far, Lena," he said quietly. "You were supposed to stop at Version Seven. Eight was never meant to wake up."Lena stepped forward, even though Ethan tried to hold her back. "You said you remembered everything.""I do.""Then tell me the truth," she said,
Lena fell. There was no floor. No walls. No up or down. Just endless black and the roar of air rushing past her ears, tearing her hair back. She didn't even have time to scream. Then something grabbed her wrist.Hard. Real. Flesh and bone and desperate strength."LENA!"She looked up, gasping, hair whipping across her face.Ethan.Not the silver-eyed copy from the hospital. Not the clean-suited stranger from the apartment. The _real_ Ethan. His face was bruised, a cut on his cheekbone, his clothes covered in gray dust and grime as if he'd been digging himself out of rubble. But his eyes - those dark, warm, worried eyes that had always found hers in a crowd - were unmistakable. They were _his_."Ethan!" She cried his name like it was air.He pulled her toward him with both arms, yanking her onto something solid. For a moment, neither of them spoke. She just held onto him, fists clenched in his shirt, breathing him in - dust and sweat and real, alive Ethan."You're real," she whispered
