CHAPTER 7 THE POWER THAT CAME BACK

Lena stared at her hand.

Nothing.

The strange silver glow was gone.

She turned her palm over.

Normal skin.

Normal fingers.

No mark.

No scar.

Nothing that could explain what she had just seen.

"Did you see that?"

Ethan didn't answer immediately.

He was watching her hand.

"Yes."

Lena's stomach tightened.

"You saw it?"

"A light."

"Silver?"

"Yes."

She slowly lowered her hand.

For three years after the apocalypse began, Lena had believed she understood every terrible thing that happened to her.

The fever.

The infected.

The collapse.

The violence.

The hunger.

The endless struggle to survive.

But she had never seen anything like this.

Not once.

"Maybe it's connected to the rebirth," she whispered.

Ethan folded his arms.

"That's not exactly scientific."

"Neither is waking up three years in the past."

He couldn't argue with that.

The lodge became silent again.

Then Ethan picked up the SunVolt file.

"We have another problem."

Lena looked at him.

"The lawsuit?"

He nodded.

"You said it happens next month."

"It did."

"But the documents show preparations already started."

Lena walked toward the table.

She read the first page.

Then the second.

Then the third.

Her expression slowly changed.

In the first timeline, SunVolt had been considered one of Cross Industries' safest investments.

The lawsuit had appeared suddenly.

The company had lost millions.

Ethan had dismissed it as an unfortunate business problem.

But now Lena knew something he hadn't known before.

The lawsuit wasn't the real problem.

Someone had deliberately buried information about defective battery storage systems.

And if the information surfaced too late, Cross Industries would take the blame.

"Ethan."

"Yes?"

"Don't invest."

"I already know."

"No."

She pointed at the document.

"Don't just avoid the investment."

She looked directly at him.

"Find whoever hid this."

Ethan's eyes narrowed.

"You think someone inside my company is involved?"

"I think someone wanted you to lose money."

"And why?"

"I don't know yet."

That answer bothered him.

Lena could see it.

In the first timeline, she had learned that knowing the future didn't mean knowing everything.

Changing one event could change ten others.

That was what terrified her most.

Her memories were no longer a perfect map.

They were becoming clues.

Ethan closed the file.

"Then we'll investigate."

Lena nodded.

"Quietly."

"Of course."

He picked up his phone.

"Margaret."

The call connected almost immediately.

"Yes, Mr. Cross?"

"Freeze all new SunVolt investment activity. I want a private audit of every document connected to the company."

There was a pause.

"Understood."

"And Margaret?"

"Yes?"

"Don't tell anyone why."

"Understood."

The call ended.

Lena looked at him.

"You trust her?"

"More than most."

"Good."

Ethan glanced toward the dark windows.

"We'll need people we can trust."

Lena nodded.

She knew that better than anyone.

Trust had killed people in her first life.

Sometimes the wrong person knowing your plans was more dangerous than having no plan at all.

Ethan walked toward the back door.

"Come with me."

"Where?"

"The well."

They stepped outside.

The night air was cold.

Lena followed him around the side of the lodge.

The old stone well stood beneath a large tree.

Ethan removed the wooden cover.

Lena looked inside.

"How deep?"

"According to the records, nearly thirty meters."

She remembered something.

"There's a problem."

"What?"

"The well dried up in 2015."

Ethan looked at her.

"You knew that too?"

"Yes."

He lowered a measuring device into the opening.

They waited.

A few seconds later, the device beeped.

Ethan checked the reading.

"There's water."

Lena stared.

"What?"

"Water."

He checked again.

The result didn't change.

"There shouldn't be."

Lena stepped closer.

A strange sensation returned to her palm.

Warmth.

Then a faint pulse.

The water below suddenly rippled.

Lena froze.

"Ethan."

He looked down.

The surface was moving.

There was no wind.

No rain.

Nothing had touched it.

Yet the water continued to tremble.

Then it stopped.

Silence.

Ethan slowly looked at Lena.

"Your hand."

She looked down.

The silver light had returned.

This time it was brighter.

A thin glow moved across her palm before disappearing beneath her skin.

Lena stepped backward.

"What is happening to me?"

Ethan didn't answer.

He was staring at the well.

Then at her.

Then back at the well.

"We're going inside."

"Why?"

"Because whatever this is, I don't want you standing beside an unexplained thirty-meter hole in the dark."

Despite everything, Lena almost smiled.

That sounded exactly like Ethan.

They returned to the lodge.

Ethan locked the door.

Lena sat at the kitchen table while he searched through his laptop.

"Maybe there's something about this in medical records," he said.

"Medical?"

"Your rebirth changed your body. Maybe we can find an explanation."

Lena shook her head.

"I died."

"I know."

"And then I woke up three years earlier."

"I know."

"There isn't a normal explanation."

Ethan looked at her.

"Then we'll find an abnormal one."

Before Lena could respond, his laptop made a sound.

A new email.

Ethan opened it.

His expression hardened.

"What?"

He turned the screen toward her.

It was from Margaret.

URGENT: UNKNOWN PERSON ACCESSING PRIVATE CROSS INDUSTRIES FILES.

Lena's blood ran cold.

"When?"

"Tonight."

She read the next line.

Access originated from a restricted executive account.

Ethan stood.

"Someone is already inside my company."

Lena remembered the first timeline.

She remembered betrayal.

She remembered how quickly everything had collapsed after the first major financial crisis.

But this had never happened this early.

Someone was moving ahead of schedule.

Her silver-lit hand suddenly warmed again.

Then a single thought struck her with terrifying clarity.

Not a memory.

Not a guess.

A warning.

Someone knows she came back.

Lena looked at Ethan.

"We're not the only ones changing the future."

Outside the lodge, somewhere beyond the trees, a distant light appeared.

Then disappeared.

Someone was watching.

"Ethan!"Lena screamed it.Her voice bounced off the metal walls.Nothing. No answer. He was just... gone. One second his hand was almost in hers. The next second, empty air.Daniel ran to where Ethan had been standing. "Don't! Don't touch the floor!"Lena froze mid-step.A thin circle of silver light had bloomed under her feet. It pulsed. Once. Then it was gone, like it was never there. The older Lena was staring at that spot, her face grey."He was taken.""By what?" Lena snapped. "By what? Tell me!""The system.""Then get him back! You know how this place works, get him back!"The older woman shook her head slowly."You don't get it. Ethan wasn't taken because he was weak, Lena."She turned and looked at the seventh door."He was taken because he's the key."_CLICK._A loud, heavy metallic click echoed through the whole chamber. The seventh door had unlocked itself.Lena didn't think. She just started walking toward it.Daniel grabbed her shoulder. "Wait. Lena, wait.""My husband

No. No, that was wrong."That's not her name."Everyone turned to look at her.She had to force the words out."Maya's last name was Bennett. It's always been Bennett."Ethan's jaw tightened. His eyes never left the screen."Then why the hell is the system calling her Carter?""I don't know," Lena whispered. "I swear I don't know."6.The screen glitched.A photo popped up.Lena's stomach dropped. • Reborn before the apocalypse    Chapter 30 — THE THING BEHIND THE SEVENTH DOOR

The laughter stopped.Mid-laugh, cut off, like a tape stopped.Silence returned to the chamber, so heavy and absolute that Lena could hear her own heart hammering and Ethan's ragged breathing. For several seconds, nobody moved. Nobody dared to breathe.Lena stared at the seventh door.It was still opening. On its own. No hands touching it.Slowly. Painfully. Inch by inch, as if the darkness behind it was heavy and pushing through.Beyond it was not another room. Not a lab, not a corridor. It was darkness. Not ordinary darkness that light can fill. This was the kind of darkness that ate light. The blue glow from the memory core seemed to disappear, to be swallowed, whenever it reached the doorway.Ethan tightened his grip on Lena's hand so hard her knuckles went white."Don't go near it," he whispered, his voice raw. "Lena, whatever you do, don't go near that door."Lena looked at him, her eyes wide, tears drying on her cheeks. "You said we were never supposed to open it. Why? Tell me

  • Reborn before the apocalypse    Chapter 29 — THE ANCHOR

The machines screamed. Not an alarm. A scream - a high, electronic shriek of a thousand hard drives spinning up at once, so loud Lena could barely hear her own thoughts. She pressed her hands over her ears.Seven versions of her stood around the chamber, each frozen beneath a different beam of white light that had come from nowhere. Trapped. Like specimens. And Ethan stood at the center. Alone. His eyes were silver. Not glowing bright like Daniel's had. Not normal brown either. Just... silver enough to make Lena's heart stop dead in her chest. A thin ring of silver around his pupils, spreading."Ethan?" Her voice was small under the screaming. He didn't answer. He just stared straight ahead, at nothing.Daniel stepped forward quickly and put a hand out to stop her."Don't touch him."Lena turned on him sharply, panic making her angry. "What did you do to him? What did you do?!""Nothing," Daniel said, his face pale in the white light."Then why is he like this? Why does he look like—

  • Reborn before the apocalypse    Chapter 28 — THE SEVEN VERSIONS

"I remember everything."Daniel's voice echoed through the enormous underground chamber, bouncing off metal and concrete and a thousand dead machines.Lena stared at him, her hand still clutching Ethan's.The seven figures remained motionless behind their open doors far below. Seven versions of her. Seven identical faces staring up at the platform. Seven silver marks glowing faintly in the dark, like eyes.Ethan slowly raised his weapon, his arm tight against Lena, pointing it straight at Daniel's chest."Daniel, stay where you are. Don't come any closer."Daniel ignored him completely. His silver eyes remained locked on Lena, and there was something terrible in them - pity and fear and guilt all at once."You shouldn't have come this far, Lena," he said quietly. "You were supposed to stop at Version Seven. Eight was never meant to wake up."Lena stepped forward, even though Ethan tried to hold her back. "You said you remembered everything.""I do.""Then tell me the truth," she said,

  • Reborn before the apocalypse    Chapter 27 — THE REAL ETHAN

Lena fell. There was no floor. No walls. No up or down. Just endless black and the roar of air rushing past her ears, tearing her hair back. She didn't even have time to scream. Then something grabbed her wrist.Hard. Real. Flesh and bone and desperate strength."LENA!"She looked up, gasping, hair whipping across her face.Ethan.Not the silver-eyed copy from the hospital. Not the clean-suited stranger from the apartment. The _real_ Ethan. His face was bruised, a cut on his cheekbone, his clothes covered in gray dust and grime as if he'd been digging himself out of rubble. But his eyes - those dark, warm, worried eyes that had always found hers in a crowd - were unmistakable. They were _his_."Ethan!" She cried his name like it was air.He pulled her toward him with both arms, yanking her onto something solid. For a moment, neither of them spoke. She just held onto him, fists clenched in his shirt, breathing him in - dust and sweat and real, alive Ethan."You're real," she whispered
