CHAPTER 9 YOU SHOULDN'T HAVE COME BACK

last update publish date: 2026-10-03 19:27:30

Lena couldn't stop staring at the message.

YOU SHOULDN'T HAVE COME BACK.

Five words.

Five words that shouldn't exist.

Nobody knew.

Nobody could know.

Unless—

"Ethan."

He didn't answer.

His attention remained fixed on the paper.

Then he turned it over.

Nothing.

No signature.

No fingerprint.

No explanation.

"How did they know?" Lena asked.

Ethan looked at her.

"That's what we're going to find out."

He placed the paper inside a transparent folder.

"Don't touch it again."

"Why?"

"Because if whoever sent this wanted to scare you, they may have left something behind."

Lena looked at her glowing hand.

"They already left something behind."

Ethan followed her gaze.

The silver light had disappeared.

Again.

As if it had never existed.

"We need to understand that."

"I know."

"Tomorrow."

"No."

Ethan looked at her.

"Now."

He picked up his laptop.

They moved to the dining table.

Ethan connected the computer to the lodge's security system.

A small screen appeared.

Most of the cameras were old.

Some hadn't worked in years.

But the camera facing the front road was still functioning.

Ethan rewound the footage.

Nothing.

He went back ten minutes.

Nothing.

Twenty minutes.

Nothing.

Then Lena noticed movement.

"Stop."

Ethan paused.

A shadow stood near the trees.

He enlarged the image.

The quality was terrible.

But there was definitely someone there.

The figure stood completely still.

Watching the lodge.

Ethan rewound the footage again.

The person had appeared almost an hour before they noticed the light.

"How long have they been there?" Lena whispered.

"At least forty minutes."

"Why didn't they approach?"

"Maybe they were waiting."

"For what?"

Ethan didn't answer.

He continued watching.

Then the figure suddenly looked directly toward the camera.

Lena's stomach dropped.

"Can they see the camera?"

"Possibly."

The figure raised one hand.

Something reflected in the darkness.

A ring.

Three lines crossing a circle.

Then the footage went black.

Ethan immediately checked the system.

"Someone cut the signal."

"From outside?"

"Yes."

Lena stood.

"We have to leave."

Ethan shook his head.

"No."

She stared at him.

"Why?"

"Because whoever sent that message wants us frightened."

He closed the laptop.

"And I don't like being told what to do."

Despite the fear in her chest, Lena almost smiled.

That was Ethan.

Even when the world ended, he had hated being controlled.

She looked toward the basement.

"What about the supplies?"

"We begin tomorrow."

"And the land?"

"I'll buy it."

"The generator?"

"Two."

"Water?"

"Three storage systems."

"Food?"

"Enough for a year."

Lena blinked.

"A year?"

"For now."

She stared at him.

"You really believe me."

Ethan's expression became serious.

"I believe that something is coming."

He paused.

"And I believe you know more than you're telling me."

Lena looked away.

There were still things she couldn't explain.

The mysterious voice.

The silver light.

The visions.

And now the message.

She didn't know whether telling Ethan everything would protect him or put him in greater danger.

"I'll tell you," she said quietly.

"When?"

"When I understand it."

Ethan nodded.

He didn't push.

That surprised her.

In her first life, Ethan had always demanded answers.

But this Ethan was different.

He was learning to trust her.

A strange sound suddenly came from the basement.

A metallic click.

Both turned.

Ethan grabbed the flashlight.

"Stay behind me."

They descended the stairs.

The basement was dark.

Ethan swept the beam across the walls.

Nothing.

Then Lena saw it.

A small red light blinking beneath the stairs.

She walked closer.

"That's not yours."

"No."

Ethan crouched.

It was another device.

Smaller than the one attached to the generator.

He pulled it free.

The screen on the device displayed a single number.

03:00:00

Lena stared.

"What does that mean?"

The number changed.

02:59:59

Ethan's expression hardened.

"A countdown."

"To what?"

"I don't know."

The number continued falling.

02:59:42

Lena felt a cold sensation run through her body.

Then the silver light appeared again.

This time, it didn't stay in her palm.

It traveled up her wrist.

A sudden image filled her mind.

The lodge.

Burning?

No.

Not burning.

Empty.

Then Ethan.

Standing alone.

Then the Brooklyn Bridge.

Then darkness.

Lena gasped.

Ethan caught her before she fell.

"What did you see?"

She looked at him.

"You."

"Where?"

"I don't know."

"Tell me."

"You were alone."

His face changed.

"What else?"

"The bridge."

He went silent.

Lena realized something.

The future wasn't showing her random things.

It was showing possibilities.

Warnings.

Events that could happen if they failed.

The countdown continued.

02:58:11

Ethan looked at the device.

"We have less than three hours."

"For what?"

"I don't know."

Lena suddenly remembered something.

In her first life, exactly three years before the apocalypse, there had been an unexplained emergency alert.

She had ignored it.

Almost everyone had.

The message had disappeared after several minutes.

But later, survivors discovered that the alert had been connected to a series of infrastructure failures.

Lena looked at the clock.

"Turn on the radio."

Ethan did.

Static filled the room.

Then a voice appeared.

"...unusual seismic activity has been detected across several regions..."

Lena froze.

That wasn't supposed to happen yet.

The voice continued.

"...officials are advising residents to remain calm..."

Ethan looked at her.

"This wasn't in your memories."

"No."

The radio crackled.

Then the voice disappeared.

A new sound replaced it.

A repeating emergency tone.

Lena's palm flashed silver.

The countdown on the device suddenly changed.

02:57:00

Then a message appeared beneath it.

FIRST CHANGE DETECTED.

Lena stared.

Ethan read it too.

Neither spoke.

The apocalypse was still three years away.

But the future they remembered was already disappearing.

And somewhere in the darkness beyond the lodge, someone had just started the clock.

To be continued....

"Ethan!"Lena screamed it.Her voice bounced off the metal walls.Nothing. No answer. He was just... gone. One second his hand was almost in hers. The next second, empty air.Daniel ran to where Ethan had been standing. "Don't! Don't touch the floor!"Lena froze mid-step.A thin circle of silver light had bloomed under her feet. It pulsed. You know how this place works, get him back!"The older woman shook her head slowly."You don't get it. Ethan wasn't taken because he was weak, Lena."She turned and looked at the seventh door."He was taken because he's the key."_CLICK._A loud, heavy metallic click echoed through the whole chamber. The seventh door had unlocked itself.Lena didn't think. She just started walking toward it.Daniel grabbed her shoulder. "Wait. Lena, wait.""My husband

No. No, that was wrong."That's not her name."Everyone turned to look at her.She had to force the words out."Maya's last name was Bennett. It's always been Bennett."Ethan's jaw tightened. His eyes never left the screen."Then why the hell is the system calling her Carter?""I don't know," Lena whispered. "I swear I don't know."6.The screen glitched.A photo popped up.Lena's stomach dropped. • Reborn before the apocalypse    Chapter 30 — THE THING BEHIND THE SEVENTH DOOR

The laughter stopped.Mid-laugh, cut off, like a tape stopped.Silence returned to the chamber, so heavy and absolute that Lena could hear her own heart hammering and Ethan's ragged breathing. For several seconds, nobody moved. Nobody dared to breathe.Lena stared at the seventh door.It was still opening. On its own. No hands touching it.Slowly. Painfully. Inch by inch, as if the darkness behind it was heavy and pushing through.Beyond it was not another room. Not a lab, not a corridor. It was darkness. Not ordinary darkness that light can fill. This was the kind of darkness that ate light. The blue glow from the memory core seemed to disappear, to be swallowed, whenever it reached the doorway.Ethan tightened his grip on Lena's hand so hard her knuckles went white."Don't go near it," he whispered, his voice raw. "Lena, whatever you do, don't go near that door."Lena looked at him, her eyes wide, tears drying on her cheeks. "You said we were never supposed to open it. Why? Tell me

  • Reborn before the apocalypse    Chapter 29 — THE ANCHOR

The machines screamed. Not an alarm. A scream - a high, electronic shriek of a thousand hard drives spinning up at once, so loud Lena could barely hear her own thoughts. She pressed her hands over her ears.Seven versions of her stood around the chamber, each frozen beneath a different beam of white light that had come from nowhere. Trapped. Like specimens. And Ethan stood at the center. Alone. His eyes were silver. Not glowing bright like Daniel's had. Not normal brown either. Just... silver enough to make Lena's heart stop dead in her chest. A thin ring of silver around his pupils, spreading."Ethan?" Her voice was small under the screaming. He didn't answer. He just stared straight ahead, at nothing.Daniel stepped forward quickly and put a hand out to stop her."Don't touch him."Lena turned on him sharply, panic making her angry. "What did you do to him? What did you do?!""Nothing," Daniel said, his face pale in the white light."Then why is he like this? Why does he look like—

  • Reborn before the apocalypse    Chapter 28 — THE SEVEN VERSIONS

"I remember everything."Daniel's voice echoed through the enormous underground chamber, bouncing off metal and concrete and a thousand dead machines.Lena stared at him, her hand still clutching Ethan's.The seven figures remained motionless behind their open doors far below. Seven versions of her. Seven identical faces staring up at the platform. Seven silver marks glowing faintly in the dark, like eyes.Ethan slowly raised his weapon, his arm tight against Lena, pointing it straight at Daniel's chest."Daniel, stay where you are. Don't come any closer."Daniel ignored him completely. His silver eyes remained locked on Lena, and there was something terrible in them - pity and fear and guilt all at once."You shouldn't have come this far, Lena," he said quietly. "You were supposed to stop at Version Seven. Eight was never meant to wake up."Lena stepped forward, even though Ethan tried to hold her back. "You said you remembered everything.""I do.""Then tell me the truth," she said,

  • Reborn before the apocalypse    Chapter 27 — THE REAL ETHAN

Lena fell. There was no floor. No walls. No up or down. Just endless black and the roar of air rushing past her ears, tearing her hair back. She didn't even have time to scream. Then something grabbed her wrist.Hard. Real. Flesh and bone and desperate strength."LENA!"She looked up, gasping, hair whipping across her face.Ethan.Not the silver-eyed copy from the hospital. Not the clean-suited stranger from the apartment. The _real_ Ethan. His face was bruised, a cut on his cheekbone, his clothes covered in gray dust and grime as if he'd been digging himself out of rubble. But his eyes - those dark, warm, worried eyes that had always found hers in a crowd - were unmistakable. They were _his_."Ethan!" She cried his name like it was air.He pulled her toward him with both arms, yanking her onto something solid. For a moment, neither of them spoke. She just held onto him, fists clenched in his shirt, breathing him in - dust and sweat and real, alive Ethan."You're real," she whispered
