Chapter 27 — THE REAL ETHAN

last update Fecha de publicación: 2026-10-05 22:11:36

Lena fell.

There was no floor. No walls. No up or down. Just endless black and the roar of air rushing past her ears, tearing her hair back.

She didn't even have time to scream.

Then something grabbed her wrist.

Hard. Real. Flesh and bone and desperate strength.

"LENA!"

She looked up, gasping, hair whipping across her face.

Ethan.

Not the silver-eyed copy from the hospital. Not the clean-suited stranger from the apartment.

The _real_ Ethan.

His face was bruised, a cut on his cheekbone, his clothes covered in gray dust and grime as if he'd been digging himself out of rubble. But his eyes - those dark, warm, worried eyes that had always found hers in a crowd - were unmistakable. They were _his_.

"Ethan!" She cried his name like it was air.

He pulled her toward him with both arms, yanking her onto something solid. For a moment, neither of them spoke. She just held onto him, fists clenched in his shirt, breathing him in - dust and sweat and real, alive Ethan.

"You're real," she whispered into his chest, her voice shaking violently. "You're real, you're real, you're—"

"I think so," he said, but he held her just as tight, like if he let go she'd vanish again. His hand was on the back of her head. "God, Lena, I think so."

She pulled back just enough to look at his face, tears already spilling. "What does that mean? What do you mean you think so?"

Ethan looked around the darkness, his breathing heavy.

"I woke up down here," he said. "In the dark. I don't know how long I was out. I heard you falling. I heard you scream."

"Where?" She looked around too. "Where is down here?"

A faint blue light began to throb beneath them, slowly growing.

Lena looked down.

They were standing on a narrow metal platform, no wider than a doorway, suspended over an abyss.

Far below - impossibly far - was an enormous underground chamber. Bigger than Cross Tower. Bigger than anything beneath Brooklyn should be.

Rows and rows of machines stretched into the darkness, as far as the eye could see. Thousands of small silver lights blinked across them, like a city of stars.

Lena stared, her mouth open.

"This is beneath Brooklyn," she breathed. "This is... this is under the whole city."

Ethan nodded, still holding her hand so tight it hurt.

"I think it's older than Aurora. Older than Project Zero. This feels like the original."

A sound came from behind them.

Footsteps. Soft, bare feet on metal.

Lena spun around, shoving Ethan slightly behind her.

The woman who looked like her stood at the edge of the platform, where the darkness met the blue light. The other Lena. The one from the glass.

"You found him," she said quietly, looking at Ethan.

Lena moved closer to Ethan, her whole body tense. "Stay away from us. Don't come any closer."

The woman smiled, but it wasn't cruel. It was tired.

"If I wanted you dead, Lena, you wouldn't be standing there. Neither of you would."

Ethan raised his weapon - where he had gotten it, Lena didn't know - his arm steady despite the dust and blood.

"Who are you?" he demanded, his voice low. "For the last time, who the hell are you?"

The woman looked at him for a long moment.

"That's complicated, Ethan."

"I don't care if it's complicated!"

"You should," she said softly. She pointed down toward the endless machines below, toward the blinking lights. "Because that facility down there has been running for decades. Since before you were born, Ethan Cross."

Ethan lowered the weapon just an inch, his brow furrowing.

"Who built it? Who could build something like this?"

The woman looked at Lena. Her gaze was heavy.

"She did."

Lena's stomach tightened into a knot. "Me? What do you mean me?"

"The original you. The first one. Before the copies. Before the resets."

A screen suddenly activated nearby with a sharp hiss, projecting into the air.

A photograph appeared. Old, a little faded, but clear.

A woman standing in this exact underground facility, when it was brand new and clean.

It was Lena. But older. Thirty-five, maybe. Hair tied back, no makeup, in a lab coat. Confident. Brilliant.

Beside her stood Ethan, younger, smiling at her, his arm around her waist.

And beside them both, Daniel, also younger, holding a clipboard, grinning.

The three of them. Together. Like a team. Like friends.

The date stamped beneath the photograph read:

*JUNE 17, 2011.*

Lena stared, her heart thudding painfully.

"That was before I knew either of them," she whispered. "I didn't meet Daniel until high school. I didn't meet Ethan until I was twenty-five, at Cross Tower..."

The other Lena shook her head slowly.

"That version of you knew them. The first version knew them for years."

Lena looked at her, lost, broken. "Then who am I? If she is the original, who am I?"

The woman answered quietly, without cruelty, just truth.

"The eighth copy. The last attempt. The one that was never supposed to work."

Lena felt numb. Cold spreading through her limbs.

"Why don't I remember any of that? Why don't I remember being her?"

"Because your memories were rebuilt from fragments," the other Lena said. "Scraps of her. Pieces they could salvage after the lab explosion. You're a collage, Lena. A beautiful, broken collage of a woman who died twelve years ago."

Ethan looked down at the machines, his jaw tight. "Why make eight copies? Why keep trying?"

The woman's expression changed - something like anger flickering.

"Because the first seven failed."

"What happened to them?" Ethan asked.

"They remembered too much," she whispered. "They remembered being the original. They remembered you killing her. And they couldn't live with it."

A low alarm suddenly sounded - not loud, but deep, vibrating through the metal platform.

The machines below began shutting down.

One by one, row by row, the thousands of silver lights went dark, like candles being blown out.

The woman looked worried, her composure cracking for the first time.

"That shouldn't be happening. The archive is supposed to be stable in version eight."

Ethan turned sharply. "What? What's happening?"

She pointed toward the far end of the chamber, where a single machine remained stubbornly active, its screen glowing bright blue against the dying darkness.

Its screen displayed one line:

*ORIGINAL SUBJECT LOCATED. SIGNAL ACTIVE.*

Lena's heart began pounding so loud she could hear it in her ears.

"Original subject?" she breathed.

The woman nodded slowly, her eyes wide.

"She's still alive."

Ethan looked at Lena, then at the woman. "Who? Who is still alive?"

The answer came from the darkness itself.

A woman's voice. Lena's voice. But older. Rougher. Worn by time and grief and isolation.

"Me."

Everyone froze.

A door - a real, heavy steel door that had been hidden in the far wall - opened with a hydraulic hiss at the far end of the chamber.

A woman stepped into the blue light.

She looked exactly like Lena.

But older. Much older. Fifty, maybe. Her dark hair was streaked heavily with gray, pulled back. Her face carried years of exhaustion, of living alone underground. Deep lines around her eyes.

And on her wrist was the silver symbol - but not glowing. Scarred. Burned into her skin like a brand.

The original Lena.

Lena stared at her, her own face staring back, aged twenty years.

The woman looked back at her. For several long seconds, neither moved. Neither breathed.

Then the woman smiled. A small, heartbroken, motherly smile.

"You finally came home, little one."

Lena couldn't speak. Her mouth opened, but no sound came out.

Ethan stepped forward instinctively, half in front of Lena.

"Who are you?" he asked, his voice rough.

The woman looked at him, and her smile turned sadder.

"You," she said softly.

Ethan frowned. "What? What does that mean?"

"You've asked that question seven times, Ethan," she said. "Every time a new version woke up, you asked me who I was. And every time, you forgot the answer."

She touched the scarred silver symbol on her wrist.

"You were never her protector, Ethan Cross."

Ethan looked confused, looking down at his own hands.

"You were her anchor."

Lena's voice finally came back, trembling. "What does that mean? Anchor?"

The original Lena looked at her - at her younger self, her eighth self.

"It means Project Zero couldn't bring me back alone," she said. "A consciousness that strong... it needs a tether. A second mind to hold it in place while it transfers."

She pointed at Ethan, her finger steady.

"It needed him."

Ethan stared at his hands, at his own faint silver mark. "What did I do? What did I give it?"

"You gave it your memories," the original said. "All of them. Every memory you had of me, of us, to rebuild me when I died."

Silence fell, heavy as the earth above them.

"Why?" Ethan whispered.

The original Lena's expression softened, full of an old love.

"Because I asked you to, my love. Because I begged you."

Lena stepped forward now, tears running freely. "Why would you ask him to do that? Why would you ask him to... to lose himself?"

The original Lena looked directly into her eyes - into her own younger eyes - and answered:

"Because I knew one day you'd have to meet yourself. And you would need someone to remind you who you were."

A violent tremor shook the chamber. Dust rained from the ceiling far above.

The machines below began powering back up, but not normally - wildly, erratically, lights flashing red.

One screen flashed, then another, then hundreds at once, lighting up the abyss like lightning.

Lena's heart stopped.

The original Lena looked toward the screens, her face draining of all color.

"No," she whispered. "No, no, no—"

The other Lena - the seventh - whispered beside them, her voice full of terror:

"They're waking up."

Ethan raised his weapon, his knuckles white, looking around at the dark.

"How many? How many are down there?"

The original Lena answered, her voice barely audible over the alarms:

"Seven."

The chamber doors began opening far below. Heavy steel doors grinding open one by one.

One.

Two.

Three.

Four.

Five.

Six.

Seven.

Dark figures appeared behind them in the blue light, stepping out of the machines.

Each had Lena's face. Each had the same silver mark burning on their palms. But each looked... wrong. Empty. Angry.

Each one identical.

The original Lena looked at the eighth version - at Lena - her eyes filled with fear for her.

"You were never supposed to survive, Eight," she whispered. "You were supposed to be the final overwrite. The clean one."

Lena stared at the seven figures below, who were now looking up at the platform, looking up at her, smiling the same smile.

"Then why did I?" she whispered. "Why did I survive when they didn't?"

The original Lena's eyes filled with tears.

"Because someone changed the code at the last second. Someone locked your file so you couldn't be deleted."

"Who?" Lena asked, though a part of her already knew.

She looked at Ethan.

Ethan's face went pale as he stared at the message that suddenly appeared.

The original Lena whispered the answer:

"He did."

Every machine in the chamber suddenly shut down again. Complete, instant blackness for half a second.

Then a single message appeared across every single screen, thousands of them, illuminating the entire underground city in stark white:

*ETHAN CROSS — ORIGINAL ARCHITECT IDENTIFIED.*

*ADMINISTRATOR OVERRIDE — VERSION 08 PROTECTED.*

Lena slowly turned toward Ethan, her mouth open.

He stared at the message, at his own name, his hands shaking.

"I don't remember doing that," he whispered. "I don't... I have no memory of that..."

The original Lena smiled sadly, tears in her old eyes.

"You don't. You never do. Because to save her, you have to forget her."

A deep voice echoed through the chamber, calm, familiar, and terrifying because it was coming from everywhere.

"But I do."

Daniel stepped from the shadows behind the original Lena.

He looked at Ethan. Then at Lena. And finally at the seven awakened versions below, who all turned to look at him and bowed their heads slightly.

His silver eyes glowed bright.

"I remember everything."

"Ethan!"Lena screamed it.Her voice bounced off the metal walls.Nothing. No answer. He was just... gone. One second his hand was almost in hers. The next second, empty air.Daniel ran to where Ethan had been standing. "Don't! Don't touch the floor!"Lena froze mid-step.A thin circle of silver light had bloomed under her feet. It pulsed. Once. Then it was gone, like it was never there. The older Lena was staring at that spot, her face grey."He was taken.""By what?" Lena snapped. "By what? Tell me!""The system.""Then get him back! You know how this place works, get him back!"The older woman shook her head slowly."You don't get it. Ethan wasn't taken because he was weak, Lena."She turned and looked at the seventh door."He was taken because he's the key."_CLICK._A loud, heavy metallic click echoed through the whole chamber. The seventh door had unlocked itself.Lena didn't think. She just started walking toward it.Daniel grabbed her shoulder. "Wait. Lena, wait.""My husband

7.The countdown didn't stop.Lena couldn't breathe. The name on the screen was still there, burning white.ANCHOR: MAYA CARTERDaniel's voice cracked beside her. "Maya Carter?"Lena shook her head. No. No, that was wrong."That's not her name."Everyone turned to look at her.She had to force the words out."Maya's last name was Bennett. It's always been Bennett."Ethan's jaw tightened. His eyes never left the screen."Then why the hell is the system calling her Carter?""I don't know," Lena whispered. • Reborn before the apocalypse    Chapter 30 — THE THING BEHIND THE SEVENTH DOOR

The laughter stopped.Mid-laugh, cut off, like a tape stopped.Silence returned to the chamber, so heavy and absolute that Lena could hear her own heart hammering and Ethan's ragged breathing. For several seconds, nobody moved. Nobody dared to breathe.Lena stared at the seventh door.It was still opening. On its own. No hands touching it.Slowly. Painfully. Inch by inch, as if the darkness behind it was heavy and pushing through.Beyond it was not another room. Not a lab, not a corridor. It was darkness. Not ordinary darkness that light can fill. This was the kind of darkness that ate light. The blue glow from the memory core seemed to disappear, to be swallowed, whenever it reached the doorway.Ethan tightened his grip on Lena's hand so hard her knuckles went white."Don't go near it," he whispered, his voice raw. "Lena, whatever you do, don't go near that door."Lena looked at him, her eyes wide, tears drying on her cheeks. "You said we were never supposed to open it. Why? Tell me

  • Reborn before the apocalypse    Chapter 29 — THE ANCHOR

The machines screamed. Not an alarm. A scream - a high, electronic shriek of a thousand hard drives spinning up at once, so loud Lena could barely hear her own thoughts. She pressed her hands over her ears.Seven versions of her stood around the chamber, each frozen beneath a different beam of white light that had come from nowhere. Trapped. Like specimens. And Ethan stood at the center. Alone. His eyes were silver. Not glowing bright like Daniel's had. Not normal brown either. Just... silver enough to make Lena's heart stop dead in her chest. A thin ring of silver around his pupils, spreading."Ethan?" Her voice was small under the screaming. He didn't answer. He just stared straight ahead, at nothing.Daniel stepped forward quickly and put a hand out to stop her."Don't touch him."Lena turned on him sharply, panic making her angry. "What did you do to him? What did you do?!""Nothing," Daniel said, his face pale in the white light."Then why is he like this? Why does he look like—

"I remember everything."Daniel's voice echoed through the enormous underground chamber, bouncing off metal and concrete and a thousand dead machines.Lena stared at him, her hand still clutching Ethan's.The seven figures remained motionless behind their open doors far below. Seven versions of her. Seven identical faces staring up at the platform. Seven silver marks glowing faintly in the dark, like eyes.Ethan slowly raised his weapon, his arm tight against Lena, pointing it straight at Daniel's chest."Daniel, stay where you are. Don't come any closer."Daniel ignored him completely. His silver eyes remained locked on Lena, and there was something terrible in them - pity and fear and guilt all at once."You shouldn't have come this far, Lena," he said quietly. "You were supposed to stop at Version Seven. Eight was never meant to wake up."Lena stepped forward, even though Ethan tried to hold her back. "You said you remembered everything.""I do.""Then tell me the truth," she said,
