LOGIN"Ethan!"
Lena screamed it. Her voice bounced off the metal walls. Nothing. No answer. He was just... gone. One second his hand was almost in hers. The next second, empty air. Daniel ran to where Ethan had been standing. "Don't! Don't touch the floor!" Lena froze mid-step. A thin circle of silver light had bloomed under her feet. It pulsed. Once. Then it was gone, like it was never there. The older Lena was staring at that spot, her face grey. "He was taken." "By what?" Lena snapped. "By what? Tell me!" "The system." "Then get him back! You know how this place works, get him back!" The older woman shook her head slowly. "You don't get it. Ethan wasn't taken because he was weak, Lena." She turned and looked at the seventh door. "He was taken because he's the key." _CLICK._ A loud, heavy metallic click echoed through the whole chamber. The seventh door had unlocked itself. Lena didn't think. She just started walking toward it. Daniel grabbed her shoulder. "Wait. Lena, wait." "My husband is behind that door," she said. Daniel froze. Lena heard what she just said. My husband. She didn't take it back. Not now. Not ever. She pulled away from him. "I've lost him once. I'm not doing it again." Daniel didn't argue. He just followed her. The door creaked open. Behind it wasn't more tech. No screens. No lights. It was a corridor. Narrow. Old. Black stone walls covered in those silver marks that seemed to move if you looked at them too long. Lena reached out without thinking and touched one. And it hit her — A flash, not her memory. Or... it was hers? Ethan. Younger. Hair shorter. Wearing a white lab coat. Maya beside him, also in white. Smiling. And beside Maya — Lena. Herself. Same white coat. All three of them standing in this exact corridor. Lena ripped her hand away like she'd been burned. Daniel caught her before she fell. "You saw them?" he asked. She nodded, breathing hard. "They were here. All three of us. Here." "When?" "I don't know. It felt... before. Long before." One by one, lights started flickering on down the corridor. And at the very far end — Ethan. His back to them. "Ethan!" Lena shouted and ran. Daniel right behind her. When she reached him, she grabbed his shoulders and spun him around. His eyes were normal. No silver. Just scared. Human. "Lena," he breathed. She grabbed his arm so tight her knuckles went white. "Are you okay? What happened? Where did you go?" "Yes. I'm okay." He looked over his shoulder, deeper into the corridor. "I remembered the lock." "What lock? What are you talking about?" He pointed at the wall. Carved into the black stone was a massive symbol. Three lines crossing a circle. Lena's symbol. Her mark. Her breath caught. "That symbol... that's not just mine." Ethan shook his head. "No," he said, looking straight at her. "It's ours." Daniel came up beside them, staring at it. "What does that mean?" Ethan finally looked at him, but he kept talking to Lena. "Project Zero wasn't built around one person, Lena. It was never just you. It was never just me." The wall suddenly flared bright white. Words appeared, burning. *PRIMARY: LENA CARTER* *ANCHOR: ETHAN CROSS* *SUBJECT NINE: MAYA BENNETT* *ORIGINAL CONSCIOUSNESS: UNKNOWN* Daniel stared at the last line. "Unknown? What unknown?" The older Lena's voice came from behind them. She'd followed them in. "That's the part we never solved. In any version." Lena turned on her. "You followed us." "I had to." "Who is the original consciousness?" Lena demanded. "Who is it?" The older Lena hesitated. Then she looked at Ethan. "He knows." Everyone looked at Ethan. His face went distant. Like he was listening to something far away. "I know who it is," he whispered. Lena stepped closer, heart pounding. "Who? Tell me." He looked at her and said it so quietly she almost didn't hear. "It's not human." The corridor went dead silent. Daniel frowned. "Then what the hell is it?" Ethan stared into the darkness ahead, where the corridor seemed to go on forever. "A memory that learned how to think." The lights died. All of them. A voice came from the dark. Not from a speaker. From the stone itself. "Wrong." Everyone froze. The voice was calm. Almost amused. "I learned how to remember." Lena's palm started burning. Her silver mark lit up on its own, bright white. And at the end of the corridor, a figure appeared. Maya. But not Maya. Her eyes were solid silver. No white. No iris. Just light. She walked toward them, slow. "Lena." Lena took a step forward without thinking. "Maya." Maya smiled, but it was wrong. "I told you I'd been waiting." "What happened to you? What did they do to you?" Maya looked at Ethan. "He did." Ethan's face tightened. "I don't remember doing anything to you. Maya, I swear." "You erased me." "I didn't." "You did," she said, still so calm it was terrifying. "You erased the version of me that remembered the first world." Lena looked back and forth between them. "What first world? What are you talking about?" Maya pointed down. At the floor. Through the floor. "The one before this one." A deep rumble moved through the stone, like something huge turning over in its sleep. Maya kept going. "You think your apocalypse starts in 2024." Lena's blood ran cold. "You think it starts in 2026." She shook her head. "It doesn't." Maya looked dead into Lena's eyes. "It already happened." The walls exploded with images. Cities. Bright. Full of people. Families eating dinner. Hospitals. Kids being born. Then — darkness. Fire. Nothing. Again. A different city. Different clothes. Different year. Then darkness again. Again. And again. And again. Different worlds. Different versions of Lena. In every single one, she looked almost the same. And every single one ended the same way. Lena watched, horrified, unable to look away. "How many?" she whispered. Maya answered without blinking. "Eight." Daniel's voice was barely there. "And this... this is the ninth." Maya nodded. "Yes." Ethan looked at Lena, and she saw it click for him too. "So the apocalypse isn't coming." Lena finished it. Her voice hollow. "No." She looked at Maya. "It's repeating." Maya smiled. For real this time. "Exactly." A countdown slammed into existence above their heads, huge and red. *00:59:59* Lena stared at it. "What happens when that hits zero?" Maya's smile vanished. "The ninth world begins." "And this one? What about this world?" Maya looked at Ethan. "This one ends." The numbers started moving. *00:59:58* Ethan stepped forward. "How do we stop it? Tell us how to stop it!" Maya looked at Lena, and her silver eyes were full of pity. "You don't." Lena's hands curled into fists. "Then what the hell do we do?" Maya pointed to the end of the corridor. A massive circular door was there now. It hadn't been there a second ago. Across it, carved deep: *FIND THE ORIGINAL.* Lena stared at it. "Where? Where is it?" Maya's silver eyes flared brighter. "Inside you." The timer kept ticking. *00:59:41* Then the floor under Lena just — gave way. She dropped. Ethan lunged. "LENA!" Their fingers brushed. For a half second he had her. Then something yanked her down, hard. She heard him screaming her name from above, getting further and further away. And as the darkness swallowed her whole, Maya's voice whispered right in her ear, even though Maya was still up there: "Remember who you were before you became Lena Carter." She kept falling. And somewhere deep, deep beneath Brooklyn, another version of Lena opened her eyes. To be continued...."Ethan!"Lena screamed it.Her voice bounced off the metal walls.Nothing. 7.The countdown didn't stop.Lena couldn't breathe. The name on the screen was still there, burning white.ANCHOR: MAYA CARTERDaniel's voice cracked beside her. "Maya Carter?"Lena shook her head. No. No, that was wrong."That's not her name."Everyone turned to look at her.She had to force the words out."Maya's last name was Bennett. It's always been Bennett."Ethan's jaw tightened. His eyes never left the screen."Then why the hell is the system calling her Carter?""I don't know," Lena whispered. "I swear I don't know."6.The screen glitched.A photo popped up.Lena's stomach dropped. It was her old apartment.May 12, 2023.Maya by the kitchen window, holding that chipped blue mug she always stole."I remember that morning," Lena said. Her voice sounded far away, even to her.Daniel moved closer. "What happened that morning?"Lena stared at the photo like it might disappear."She came home around eight. She was late for work, she was pissed about traffic. She brought coffee. T
The laughter stopped.Mid-laugh, cut off, like a tape stopped.Silence returned to the chamber, so heavy and absolute that Lena could hear her own heart hammering and Ethan's ragged breathing. For several seconds, nobody moved. Nobody dared to breathe.Lena stared at the seventh door.It was still opening. On its own. No hands touching it.Slowly. Painfully. Inch by inch, as if the darkness behind it was heavy and pushing through.Beyond it was not another room. Not a lab, not a corridor. It was darkness. Not ordinary darkness that light can fill. This was the kind of darkness that ate light. The blue glow from the memory core seemed to disappear, to be swallowed, whenever it reached the doorway.Ethan tightened his grip on Lena's hand so hard her knuckles went white."Don't go near it," he whispered, his voice raw. "Lena, whatever you do, don't go near that door."Lena looked at him, her eyes wide, tears drying on her cheeks. "You said we were never supposed to open it. Why? Tell me
The machines screamed. Not an alarm. A scream - a high, electronic shriek of a thousand hard drives spinning up at once, so loud Lena could barely hear her own thoughts. She pressed her hands over her ears.Seven versions of her stood around the chamber, each frozen beneath a different beam of white light that had come from nowhere. Trapped. Like specimens. And Ethan stood at the center. Alone. His eyes were silver. Not glowing bright like Daniel's had. Not normal brown either. Just... silver enough to make Lena's heart stop dead in her chest. A thin ring of silver around his pupils, spreading."Ethan?" Her voice was small under the screaming. He didn't answer. He just stared straight ahead, at nothing.Daniel stepped forward quickly and put a hand out to stop her."Don't touch him."Lena turned on him sharply, panic making her angry. "What did you do to him? What did you do?!""Nothing," Daniel said, his face pale in the white light."Then why is he like this? Why does he look like—
"I remember everything."Daniel's voice echoed through the enormous underground chamber, bouncing off metal and concrete and a thousand dead machines.Lena stared at him, her hand still clutching Ethan's.The seven figures remained motionless behind their open doors far below. Seven versions of her. Seven identical faces staring up at the platform. Seven silver marks glowing faintly in the dark, like eyes.Ethan slowly raised his weapon, his arm tight against Lena, pointing it straight at Daniel's chest."Daniel, stay where you are. Don't come any closer."Daniel ignored him completely. His silver eyes remained locked on Lena, and there was something terrible in them - pity and fear and guilt all at once."You shouldn't have come this far, Lena," he said quietly. "You were supposed to stop at Version Seven. Eight was never meant to wake up."Lena stepped forward, even though Ethan tried to hold her back. "You said you remembered everything.""I do.""Then tell me the truth," she said,
Lena fell. There was no floor. No walls. No up or down. Just endless black and the roar of air rushing past her ears, tearing her hair back. She didn't even have time to scream. Then something grabbed her wrist.Hard. Real. Flesh and bone and desperate strength."LENA!"She looked up, gasping, hair whipping across her face.Ethan.Not the silver-eyed copy from the hospital. Not the clean-suited stranger from the apartment. The _real_ Ethan. His face was bruised, a cut on his cheekbone, his clothes covered in gray dust and grime as if he'd been digging himself out of rubble. But his eyes - those dark, warm, worried eyes that had always found hers in a crowd - were unmistakable. They were _his_."Ethan!" She cried his name like it was air.He pulled her toward him with both arms, yanking her onto something solid. For a moment, neither of them spoke. She just held onto him, fists clenched in his shirt, breathing him in - dust and sweat and real, alive Ethan."You're real," she whispered
