Chapter 12: help me

David lifted me with no effort and climbed up the stairs while I trashed and tried to wriggle myself out of his iron-like grip.

“Let me go, you bastard.” I said,landing weak punches on him.

He successfully locked me up while I continued to trash the door like I could break it. He paid me no attention.

I kept at it for a while before realizing that my efforts were futile and was only going to drain me without causing any harm to the door.

I sat down on the ground resting my back in the door making me take a good look at my room and the memories of all the times I've been locked up in here came flooding at me at once as my eyes landed in the strokes I drew on the wall over the years.

The pain was worse whenever it rained and thundered making me feel more alone. Realization hit me.

I've been a prisoner all my life and this was my cell even though I committed no crime.

My only crime was being there.

I fished out my phone and called Gia. They'd forgotten to take it away.

“My family's trying to sweep everything under the rug and deny everything. Publish the article. Let's see how much longer they can hide behind a needle."

I took her silence for approval and the line disconnected.

I have to get out of here somehow. I looked out the window, it's too high for me to jump without suffering major damage.

Suddenly, I felt like the main character in the animation “Rapunzel” except I didn't have exceptionally long hair to climb down with.

“How can I get out of here? I need to do it fast!"

A light bulb went off in my brain

"Pierce.He's the only one that can help me get out right now”

I typed his name on the search bar in my phone app and realized I didn't get his number last night as I took the liberty to drink myself to sleep.

I typed his name “Pierce Kay” on G****e. After scrolling for a while, I found a call line for the front desk of his office, grabbed a pen and a piece of paper and wrote the number down.

I didn't notice my battery was already low and the phone died just as I dialed the number. My charger is nowhere to be found. Serena must've borrowed it and forgot to return it as she always does.

Great.

I sat on the bed thinking and the lock on the door turned, I crumpled the piece of paper and threw it under my bed.

Mom came in with a glass of water, a pill in hand and two maids behind her.

“Hold her down.” She commanded.

“What're you trying to do?” I tried to fight as they held me down on the bed, she said nothing, dropped the glass on the bed and forced my mouth open then dropped the pill inside.

“I’m trying to prevent unwanted ‘situations’.” She said cruelly, poured the water in my mouth and covered my mouth and nose with her palm forcing me to swallow as I wriggled on the bed like a worm and struggled to breath.

Tears dropped from the corner of my eyes as the pill went down my throat . Something in me finally broke completely. The little piece of humanity I had left for her due to gratitude of raising me all these years.

The woman I'd called ‘mother’ all my life, would really kill my unborn child if I'd been carrying one.

“The Kay family would never forgive you for this. Mark my words.” I yelled with tears and a cracked voice.

“Forgive me for what really? It's not like you were already carrying his child. I just nipped it in the bud to prevent that possibility.” She spat and walked out with a cruel smile and the maids followed, the door clicked shut.

I have to get away from this scheming snake in human skin.

I stood up, wiped my tears, went to my wardrobe and brought out a dusty old box from the corner.

The old box contained some of my old stuffs like the jade necklace I had as a kid, I brought it from the orphanage since I always had it with me, I have no memory of how I got it but I was sure it was mine. I turned out the contents of the box and finally found it. An old phone.

I tried to turn it on but it wouldn't work so I checked for the charger, praying it works.

After a few seconds, the infinix logo came on the screen and I almost screamed from excitement.

I dialed the number I wrote down earlier and a lady responded.

“I want to speak with your boss.” I decided to go straight to the point hoping they don't treat my call as a spam call.

“ And who am I speaking with?”

“His wife.”

The line disconnected.

Right. I'd disconnect too if I were in their shoes.

I tried again. The person on the other end picked, this time with less patience.

“Ma’am, I think you have the wrong number. Sorry–”

“Wait wait. Don't disconnect the line. Tell your boss, Pierce, that Kara is on the line and it's urgent.”

“ Do you have any prior engagement with him? He's currently unavailable.”

“Just do as I say goddamit!” My patience was already thin. I don't care if I yelled.

“Tell him, his wife, Kara Jones, has a little bit of a situation”

“Okay, hold on a minute. Our boss is not married–” or could he be secretly married?

“Hang on a sec.”

After about a minute or two, Pierce's voice rang out.

“ This is Pierce speaking, who did you say you were?” His icy voice rang out of the phone speaker.

“Hey. Pierce, it's me Kara. My family locked me up in my room, I can't escape. I need your help.”

“I'm on my way.” The call ended.
