Chapter 2

作者: Much Better
I smiled. “We’ll see about that.”

The second practice SAT came as scheduled. I scored 1550, and, just as expected, Vivian scored 1560, a little higher than me.

It was the first time since entering our senior year that I hadn’t taken the top spot in the grade.

The students swarming around the bulletin board went wild.

“Oh my god, Vivian really wasn’t lying. She’s a genius! She passed Natalie without even trying!”

Vivian stood in the center of the crowd, basking in their admiration, and envy.

“I’ve said it before,” she announced proudly. “I held back before, but with the SAT coming up, of course I had to give it my all!”

Meanwhile, I sat at my desk, calmly analyzing the situation.

The system she was bound to always pushed her score a little higher than mine.

Then an idea hit me: what if I didn’t take the exam?

To test it, during the third practice, I pretended to be sick and went to the infirmary, skipping the test entirely.

Sure enough, when the results came out, Vivian’s score stayed in the 800s.

My theory was confirmed. As long as I skipped the exam, her true ability would be fully exposed.

After figuring everything out, I returned to class. A circle of students had gathered around Vivian.

Ethan was comforting her after her poor performance. “You’ve already been too considerate. Natalie was selfish. She threatened you and refused to let you surpass her.”

“She’s wicked. She deserves punishment!”

The students whispered and sneered at me.

“To be jealous of your own sister, threatening her if she scored well… that’s just cruel!”

“Vivian, you’ve been far too nice. Forget about Natalie. Let her do whatever she wants!”

As I walked in, I could hear them gossiping and plotting against me.

I stared at their faces. “What are you all talking about?”

Vivian immediately put on a pitiful expression, acting as if I had bullied her.

“It’s nothing, Natalie. We were just chatting… don’t take it to heart. It’s my fault. I just like to show off too much.”

Ethan stood beside her, looking stern.

“Natalie, you went too far this time! Knowing Vivian is better than you and still acting jealous? You couldn’t stand her outscoring you?”

Watching them perform in perfect sync, I almost laughed.

They knew her scores were purely the result of the system, yet they were acting like I was jealous of her talent.

I said calmly, “Jealous of someone who couldn’t even get into high school on her own? Someone bought in with money? An idiot who can’t even copy homework correctly?”

Vivian shot back. “Natalie, I know you look down on me, but you don’t need to slander me in front of our classmates!

“I showed my real ability a few times, and you skipped the third practice test to threaten me… what else could I do to satisfy you?”

I had no patience for her act.

I turned back to my desk and practiced problems. I had already found a way to break the cycle.

Tomorrow, the State would hold a math competition. The top three would receive guaranteed admission to Yale University. If I won, I wouldn’t have to take the SAT, and I wouldn’t have to be Vivian’s stepping stone.

At dawn, I grabbed my backpack and headed out.

I was scanning a shared bike at my doorstep when a motorcycle suddenly barreled toward me.

I was thrown through the air in an instant. My vision went black, and I lost consciousness.

When I woke up, I was lying in a rundown junkyard.

Ethan was perched on a motorcycle, and beside him, Vivian had dumped the contents of my backpack onto the ground.

She held up the math competition admission ticket and slapped it against my face.

Ethan looked at the two of us, blurting out without thinking, “When did you two get together behind my back?”Adrian smiled. “Miss Sullivan and I are just partners.”“Close partners,” I added.Hearing that, Ethan grew even more agitated, pointing recklessly at Adrian. “What are you so proud of? Dad hasn’t even decided who the heir is! Dad loves my mom so much. Even without the Sullivan family’s support, I could inherit the Whitmore family!”Adrian pulled out a stack of documents and waved them in front of Ethan.“You might have had a chance before, but… people in prison can’t inherit companies.”The documents contained evidence that Ethan had hired someone to cover up Vivian’s SAT cheating and orchestrate a murder. This was a copy; the originals had already been handed over to the police.Ethan’s face went pale immediately, and he tried to run.But as he turned, he saw the police who had been waiting all along, and standing beside them was the long-missing Vivian…Vivian, in handcuffs,

The lawyer watched calmly as Vivian broke down in tears and repeated himself.“If you do not sign this document, the law will decide your fate. According to your birth certificate, you are about to turn nineteen.”Vivian froze. Only then did she realize she had truly been abandoned by her family. If she refused to sign, prison would be her only option. Finally, she relented. After leaving the detention center, no one knew where she went, and I didn’t care.By then, I had already received my admission letter from Yale Business School. Holding it in my hands, I went to the hospital to see my real mother.I had known since childhood that I wasn’t her biological child, that she had taken me in.For my sake, she had never married, worried that I might be wronged. All I wanted was to live with my mother. I had no intention of returning to the Sullivan family. But my mother was ill, and the surgery would cost a fortune. Grandpa Sullivan promised that if I officially recognized my Sullivan her

Taking the test again, the results should have been even better, an improvement over the first attempt. But Vivian, who had originally scored 1610, got a 710 on the retest, a drop of 900 points. This wasn’t just a bad test. It was a total disaster. For some questions, she was completely clueless. There wasn’t a trace of a capable student in her.I wasn’t surprised. Ever since I had known Vivian, she hadn’t read a single book in a day, and she even copied my homework directly. Now, taking the exam on her own, failure was inevitable. This dramatic drop only confirmed suspicions that she had cheated on the SAT. To onlookers, it was solid proof.Public opinion turned against her instantly.“LOL, 1610 to 710! Dropped 900 points, this isn’t even acting anymore!”“Everyone stresses over every SAT point, but this rich girl just cheated for 900 points. How many people got blocked from their dream schools because of her? Unforgivable!”“This is hilarious. This family produced both a national cha

The principal nodded in agreement. “Natalie is right. If this really is a system error, we’d be wrongly accusing a student.“Why don’t we retrieve the test papers and start a live broadcast? That way, everyone can see the authenticity of the scores.”Vivian and Ethan instantly turned pale. They both knew the system could only manipulate scores; it couldn’t change what Vivian had actually written on her test paper. If the papers were reviewed, it would be irrefutable evidence of cheating.Vivian leaned in, warning me in a low voice, “I know there’s no way you could get a perfect score. You’re only at the 1550+ level. Are you sure you want to risk both of us losing?”Ethan also tried to persuade me. “Even if Vivian inherits the Sullivan Group, you’re still her sister. You won’t lose out on a lifetime of wealth and glory.”I smiled.“Ethan, you have a half-brother named Adrian. Why are you so afraid of him inheriting the Whitmore family? Scared he’ll kick out you and your mother, the one

The moment the officer spoke, the entire room went silent, stunned.Everyone froze in disbelief. Ethan couldn’t help but ask again, “What? How much did you say she scored?”The officer calmly pulled out the SAT report.“Vivian’s SAT score is 1610, while the maximum possible score is 1600. There is currently suspicion of cheating. Please cooperate with the investigation and come with us to the police station.”Vivian looked at me in utter disbelief, murmuring, “Impossible…”“No one can even get a perfect SAT score…”I stood calmly to the side, a faint smile tugging at my lips.I had done it. I had really done it.Just as I expected, the system Vivian was bound to was purely mechanical. It simply added a little to my score, without any regard for whether the result made sense.I had exploited that loophole. In my previous life, out of regret, I had completed hundreds of practice tests. Scoring a perfect SAT shouldn’t be too much to ask.Grandpa Sullivan’s expression immediately turned se

“Grandpa Sullivan, you’re truly blessed. Both your granddaughters are at the top of their class, maybe one of them could even become the state SAT champion!”Grandpa Sullivan stroked his cane and gave me a calm, unreadable look.“Since everyone is here today, I’ll make it official: whichever of you, Natalie or Vivian, scores higher on the SAT will be recognized as the heir groomed by the Sullivan Group.”Mrs. Whitmore beside him nodded repeatedly.“Then it’s most likely my future daughter-in-law, Vivian. After all, in the recent exams, she has consistently outscored her sister!”At that, everyone immediately crowded around Vivian.“Vivian, you’re brilliant! The position of Sullivan family heir is definitely yours.”“Wow! With the union of the Sullivan and Whitmore families, if you become the Sullivan heir, Ethan will have every right to surpass his brother and inherit the Whitmore family! This is a perfect alliance of powerhouses!”“You’re so lucky, attending a prestigious school and g
