Chapter 2

Author: Lotus
James came home stinking of Emily's perfume.

Bee-lined for our bedroom.

I blocked the door. "Hold up."

He blinked, annoyed. "Avril?"

Hand on my bump. "You've been rolling in late—and loud. I'm done losing sleep. Healer says I need full rest. Starting tonight, you're in the guest room. Don't wake me again."

He wasn't used to pushback. Tried to keep his tone smooth. "Yeah, I was late. Emily's been... a mess. She needed me. I'll keep it down next time. But not sleeping together? I'm just worried—"

"Worried something might happen to me?" I cut in, tapping my belly. "Then let me rest."

He hesitated. Eyes flicked, calculating. Then: a tight nod. "...Fine. But if anything feels off, you call me. Right away."

Worried about me? Please.

All he cared about was whether my pup would survive—so they could pass it off as Emily's.

If the Moon Goddess hadn't reset the clock, I might've believed that act.

But fake concern? It stays fake.

I hid the steel in my eyes and smiled sweetly. "Don't worry. I'll make sure the pup's born healthy."

He exhaled, relieved. Ate it up like he always did.

To him, I was still the fool who dumped her legacy for love.

Back then, Ebonfang Pack was nothing.

I was next in line to lead Silverlune Pack—strongest Alpha-blooded she-wolf of my generation.

But the second I chose James, I threw it all away to play the docile Luna.

Didn't matter that my bloodline was purer. He never doubted he could keep me on a leash.

This time?

He couldn't be more wrong.

***

In the days that followed, I played the weak card—too tired to do even basic Luna stuff, stuck in bed "for the pup."

Only a total idiot gets reborn and still breaks her back for the guy who ruined her.

Without me running things, James spiraled. Alpha life? Already hectic. Without his Luna? Chaos.

Still, every spare second he had went to Emily. Every checkup, every mood swing—he was right there, playing doting mate. Gave her all the rare supplements too, like she was carrying gold.

But I didn't care.

If I wanted something, I took it.

James could glare all he wanted—I didn't flinch.

I was the real Luna. Period.

Emily sulked like the victim, so James doubled down—spoiled her even harder, like that'd balance the scales.

The Ebonfang wolves started catching on. Whispers spread. Something wasn't right.

My friend, Lina, finally broke. "Avril, I know they're step-siblings, but James is way too close to Emily... Just be careful."

I smiled, squeezed her hand. "I've got this."

Careful? Please.

The closer he clung to Emily, the better.

I needed all eyes on her—not on the fact that my bump hadn't grown at all. Still sitting at six months.

***

Time passed. Emily's belly ballooned.

James started sweating.

"Avril, your bump looks kinda..."

He wouldn't stop hovering—asking questions, trying to check me himself.

I dodged every time. Smiled. "The pup's fine. Just a quiet one. If something was wrong, don't you think I'd say?"

He frowned, clearly not buying it—but he couldn't poke a single hole in my story.

Finally, Emily's due date crept up.

The pack healer told her to stay off her feet and move into the pack clinic.

But James had other plans—two expecting wolves giving birth at the same time? Perfect cover for a swap.

Emily didn't like the risk, but she played along. Came back to the manor, eyeing my bump like it might explode.

Three more days. Then she cracked.

Even through the wall, I heard her sobbing to James.

Two hours later—knock on my door.

He walked in, fake smile locked in place, holding that "tonic." Same one from my last life.

"Babe, now that you're further along, the pup needs more nutrients. Drink this while it's hot. You've gotten so thin."

I glanced at the mirror. Glowing, full-faced, obviously well-fed.

Laughed under my breath.

Not sure if it was his bad acting or the recycled lies that got me.

Held out my hand, no hesitation. "Sure."

James locked eyes on the fake bundle, then snapped his gaze to my stomach. His pupils blew wide. Lip twitching. "Where's our pup? What did you do? Did you... Did you get rid of her? No. No, no, no—where is she?!"He clawed at the scraps of our mind link, desperate.Too bad it was basically dust—couldn't feel a damn thing."My pup?" I brushed my belly, calm. "She's right here. Still kicking."Uncle Daniel stepped up, blocking me with his broad frame."Alpha James," he snapped, "you keep calling her your mate—mother of your pup—but you didn't even look at her. Seriously? Anyone with half a brain can see she's still carrying. Six months isn't full term. You couldn't even tell the difference."His voice dropped, sharper. "You never loved her. Should've never let the brightest jewel of Silverlune Pack end up with you."Silence hit hard.I smiled, but it stung.Yeah, I loved him. Once.Loved him enough to ditch my birthright, to dull my claws.I played the good mate—tended to his

The whole birthing suite went dead silent."You've got the wrong wolves! This is a mistake!" Emily shrieked, jabbing a finger at me. "She's the traitor— Avril!"James jumped in front of her, pale as death. "I'm the Alpha! You've got no right to arrest me or my pack!"The elder rocking the full moon crest scoffed. "The Elder Conclave answers to the Luminara Order, not some self-important Alpha. Now, let's hear from the real whistleblower."Yeah. This wasn't random—they were here because I'd called them.Every wolf in the room turned to me.The elder stepped up, helped me off the birthing bed, and handed me a handkerchief.I wiped the mess off my face, cool as ever. "Thanks, Uncle Daniel. Perfect timing."He gave me a faint smile—the kind only someone who'd watched you grow up could pull off.James's face twisted. He hadn't seen the Silverlune Pack connection coming."Avril, what did you do?"I met his eyes, calm and steady. "I told the elders the truth. Emily slept with a Dar

James flinched so hard he almost dropped the bundle. He backpedaled, then straightened up like he hadn't just been caught red-handed. "Avril? You're awake? Emily already had her pup and I—uh—I came to check on ours."Before he could finish, the bundle let out a shriek loud enough to rattle bone.He still wouldn't look at me. Jaw locked, hands shaky, he peeled back the blanket."See? Our pup's adorable!"A mottled-furred pup blinked up at him.Right on cue, James gasped like he deserved an award. "Wh-What is this? Avril! You DARE betray me?!"His roar blew the doors wide open—wolves flooded in.Seconds later, the birthing suite was packed wall to wall.Camilla barreled in first. The second she saw the pup's fur, she lost it."Moon Goddess! You filthy bitch!" she shrieked. "You TAINTED my son's bloodline? James gave up EVERYTHING to be with you—a Silverlune white wolf! Was that not enough? You went and spread your legs for some OUTSIDER?"Her screech dragged even more eyes int

I took the bowl, sniffed deep. "Huh. Smells like there's... something extra in it."James flinched. Covered fast. "What? That's ridiculous. My mom made it herself. She'd never hurt you."I sneered. "Camilla?"His brow twitched. "What's with that tone?"I blew on the steam, voice flat. "She's always hated that I outshined your bloodline. Said I wasn't soft enough. Let's be real—she'd throw a party if you marked Emily instead."His face went stiff. Yeah, he remembered how his mom really was.Camilla always said Emily was the "real" Luna. Her family died saving James, and she basically grew up in his shadow. That bond? Deep.Even with Emily knocked-up and unclaimed, Camilla still treated her like pack royalty.Guess she assumed whatever was growing in Emily's belly had to be James's.And James knew it.He scrambled for an excuse. "Avril, my mom actually likes you. She's just... not great at showing it. Hasn't she been better since you got pregnant?"I laughed.Better?Making
