Chapter 8

作者: Little Fan
It wasn't that Vivian was disgusted, but that she intended to feed Damian herself?

She held out her hand, her expression steady and certain. "Get up. Give me the bowl."

Harvey stood and said, "We'll step out at once, Your Highness."

Vivian looked at him, puzzled. "Why would you step out?"

He kept his face completely serious. "You're about to feed His Highness his medicine. If we're in the room, it might make you uncomfortable. Also, it wouldn't really be proper."

Vivian was more confused than before. "It's just feeding him medicine. What's improper about it?"

Harvey scratched the back of his neck, a little sheepish. "Well, aren't you going to feed it to him mouth-to-mouth?"

Vivian froze. Mouth-to-mouth?

She imagined it for a moment—holding the medicine in her mouth, leaning close to Damian's lips, and transferring the liquid over. The image hit her so suddenly that her heart lurched and heat rushed straight to her face.

She stared at Harvey. "Who told you that's how to feed medicine to an unconscious person?"

"That's how they do it in the storybooks," he answered honestly.

Vivian was dumbfounded. "Those are storybooks!"

Harvey stood at the bedside, his one remaining eye blinking slowly, radiating complete and genuine innocence. Vivian opened her mouth, closed it, and decided it wasn't worth pursuing.

She took a slow breath and brought her voice back to something patient and even, explaining, "Storybooks are just stories. Real life is different. There's no mouth-to-mouth involved. I need you to find me a thin strip of wood, no longer than an inch or so. Smooth it down so there are no splinters and wash it clean."

Harvey didn't fully understand what she had in mind, but nodded and went to do it without argument. He quickly returned with the wooden strip.

Vivian had the two servants add another pillow beneath Damian's head to prop him up a little more. Then, she slid one end of the wooden strip carefully between his lips, spooned up some of the medicine, and poured it slowly along the strip. The medicine flowed steadily down the wooden strip and into Damian's throat.

Harvey watched with open delight. "It's that simple!"

Vivian snorted. "Read fewer storybooks."

He grinned and leaned in, curious. "Your Highness, how did you know to do it this way?"

Vivian kept her focus on the spoon. "My maternal grandfather was a physician. I picked up things growing up around him. Though honestly, the wooden strip is just a makeshift solution. There are proper feeding tools designed for administering medication to unconscious patients. Those are much easier to use."

Harvey looked genuinely impressed. "I had no idea!"

The bowl was nearly empty, so Harvey eagerly took it and went to refill it. As Vivian watched him go, something odd struck her.

Damian was being treated by the royal physicians. If her grandfather had known about these feeding tools, then the royal physicians absolutely would know too. So, why had no one told the prince's household about them?

Her gaze moved to Damian's face. Even like this, unconscious and still, he was striking in a way that was hard to look away from. Suspicion quietly took root in her mind.

Damian was a man who had consistently won battles. Could he still have offended people?

Harvey came back with the last half bowl. "Your Highness."

Vivian set the thought aside and took it from him. She was still carefully working through it when Harvey suddenly asked, "After this, we'll need to change His Highness' clothes and wipe him down. Will you be staying to observe that as well?"

Vivian hesitated, then looked away slowly. "No..."Damian's expression remained the same. "Help me to the bed."She took his arm and steadied him as he got up, walking him to the edge of the bed to sit."When you take over the household tomorrow, try not to burn the place down," he said.Vivian straightened up. "I won't!"Without saying anything else, he let go of her and laid back. Vivian looked down at her wrist, still able to feel the warmth where his hand had been wrapped around it. A brief silence fell, then she looked again toward Damian on the bed. He'd fallen unconscious again. Because of his earlier movement, his collar had come loose, the fabric having shifted enough to show the firm, solid muscle of his chest. A light sheen of sweat made his skin glow under the low light."Your Highness!" Harvey's voice reached the room before he did. "How is His Highness?"Vivian jumped, quickly turning her gaze away. She knew she'd been staring. The tips of her ears went red before

Simon went pale. "No, I can't..."He was getting older. Some days, even keeping up with Hazel wore him out. Two rounds in a day, and he was already struggling. Twenty to thirty clients a day? He would die!Vivian caught the panic on his face and raised an eyebrow. "So, are you ready to tell me who sent you?"He gripped his sleeve tight, brow furrowed, working through it.He was just about to speak when Rebecca let out a sudden, sharp cry, "Ah!"She went down hard, arms and legs splayed out, flat on her back."Madam Rebecca fainted!"Simon snapped back to his senses and hurriedly shut his mouth. Vivian wasn't too disappointed. It was already pretty obvious who'd sent him—either Rebecca or Hazel. The maids and servants rushed to help Rebecca off the ground."I've been occupied for some time and haven't been able to manage the household myself. I left those responsibilities to my aunt as a temporary arrangement. Now that I have a wife, all of it will be transferred to her, effect

Wheels rolled over the ground, slow and steady.Vivian looked up and saw Damian seated in a wheelchair, his face pale yet strikingly handsome. Harvey stood behind him, pushing him forward slowly as they approached. She was both startled and overjoyed. Damian had actually woken up again? But why was he here? She felt her nerves kick in. How much of that conversation had he heard? Before she could think it through, the wheelchair came to a stop a short distance away."You've arrived at just the right moment, Your Highness!" Rebecca pointed straight at Vivian and turned to Damian as if presenting evidence. "Look at her. This is what the Sinclair family sent us. She's been married to you for what, a few days? The moment you fell unconscious, she hid a stable boy here and snuck out in the middle of the night to be with him!"Even though Vivian had done nothing wrong, she still felt uneasy. She looked toward Damian. The light was faint, but she could just make out the line of his jaw goi

But Simon kept whispering, "I don't want a title or a position. I just want to be by your side. There's so much I can do for you..."Vivian cut him off, "So much you can do? You just killed a horse."He blinked. "I... what?""You originally owed me the price of one parchment. A few days of working in the stables would've covered it. But now you've gone and killed a warhorse bred on the northern grasslands. It was worth more than you. If I hadn't come tonight to count the horses, I wouldn't have even known."Vivian was genuinely angry. Having grown up in a military household, she knew exactly how valuable a warhorse was. And on top of that, if none of this had happened, she'd already be in bed. Instead, she was still out here, wasting her night.Simon looked stunned. "Your Highness...""I never should've sent you to the stables. I thought feeding horses was simple enough that even you couldn't mess it up. I was wrong." Vivian didn't bother hiding her contempt. "And you had the ner

Rebecca froze. The stables?"The stables!" Hazel let out a low, amused laugh, the corner of her mouth curling up. "That girl is more careful than I thought. She hid him in the stables and snuck off to meet him at a time like this!"It was already dark outside. If the two of them slipped behind a haystack or around the back of a building, no one would find them for a good while, no matter what they were up to.Rebecca's face flushed with excitement. "Then, what are we waiting for? Let's go catch them in the act!"Hazel grabbed her wrist. "Hold on, Mom!""How can I hold on? We've been waiting forever for a chance like this!" Rebecca was practically vibrating."If you go right now, they probably haven't even gotten their clothes off yet." Hazel knew exactly how these things worked. "Wait about fifteen minutes. If you go when they're right in the middle of it, they can't run. They'll have no choice but to get dragged back without a stitch of clothing on."Rebecca nearly burst out la

By the time Vivian finished, it was fully dark. She washed up, climbed into bed, and lay there, too wound up to sleep.Damian could feel her shifting around beside him. The soft scent of jasmine drifted around him, sometimes stronger, sometimes faint. The floral fragrance teased at the tip of his nose, leaving behind a slight, ticklish warmth.Eventually, Vivian gave up trying to settle. She rolled to face him and whispered, "I can't hold it in anymore."Damian froze. What exactly was she about to do?"Your Highness," she said, her voice dropping into something almost pained. "I talk a lot. I really do. If I don't say something soon, I'm going to lose my mind."Damian was stunned.Talking. She meant talking. Right. Of course she did.An idea coming to mind, Vivian pushed herself up onto her stomach and propped her chin on her hands. "Oh, I know. I'll just tell you everything. You're unconscious anyway."Whatever she said, he couldn't hear it. That was what she thought, and she
