Chapter 3

Author: Goodtale
The backstage area was in chaos.

Shredded fabric lay scattered across the floor. Alexandria was being supported by someone as she sobbed so hard that her whole body trembled.

The moment she saw me, she broke down even harder. "Maggie, why would you do this to me? What did I ever do to you?"

"Maggie, do you have any idea how important the orientation gala is to the department?" Tracy demanded, her expression dark. "How could you pull a stunt like this and embarrass everyone?"

Christine stood beside Alexandria, looking deeply disappointed. "You've had it out for Alexandria since the first day of classes. We all saw it."

Becky piled on. "She's just jealous because Alexandria is prettier and got picked to host the gala. She's been giving Alexandria attitude in the dorm, and now she's resorted to outright sabotage."

I stood my ground without rushing to defend myself.

I'd lived through this exact moment in my previous life. Back then, I'd panicked and cried, desperately trying to prove my innocence.

I'd begged them to check the security cameras and sworn that I hadn't done it. But they'd told me the cameras were broken.

The harder I'd tried to clear my name, the guiltier I'd looked.

This time, I simply took a deep breath and said calmly, "I'm willing to cooperate with an investigation."

Tracy paused, apparently surprised by my response.

I continued before she could say anything, "But I want to see the security footage. The dress was locked in Alexandria's locker. The footage will show exactly who cut it up."

"Are you really trying to blow this out of proportion?" Tracy frowned with growing uneasiness. "Alexandria is already traumatized. Do you want to drag this out until the whole campus knows about it?"

"I know better than anyone how important this gala is to the department," I said, folding my arms. "That's why we can't declare someone guilty just because the other person cries louder."

"What is that supposed to mean?" Christine snapped. "Are you saying Alexandria is putting on an act?"

"Fine, check the cameras!" Becky chimed in. "They'll show exactly what you did. Stop pretending you're innocent!"

I remained unfazed. "I have nothing to hide. I just refuse to let someone's tears cost me my innocence."

Becky faltered. "Drop the act."

"Maggie, if you admit what you did and apologize now, we can handle this privately." Tracy sighed, giving me a patronizing look. "If we escalate this, it won't look good for anyone."

"How am I supposed to confess to something I didn't do?" I shot back. "Or have you already decided I'm guilty?"

"I'm trying to help you," she said with a frown. "Just look at Alexandria's mental state. She can't handle this kind of stress."

"So, should I just accept being branded a bully?" I retorted. "I still have four years left at this school."

Just then, the door to the backstage area swung open.

Steven Durham, the associate dean of students, walked in with several faculty members behind him. He glanced at the shredded fabric on the floor, then turned to me.

"Maggie Lomax?"

I nodded.

"What's going on here?"

I explained the situation from beginning to end, sticking to the facts without exaggerating anything.

After listening, he turned to Tracy.

"Have you checked the security footage yet?"

"I... haven't had the chance."

"This concerns the orientation gala and the reputations of two students. Get the footage. Now."

Tracy started to defend herself, but Steven's stern expression stopped her.

"Go ahead and check it," Christine muttered under her breath. "It's not like Alexandria did anything wrong."

The ten minutes it took to retrieve the footage felt longer than a century.

Alexandria was still crying, with Christine holding her close. Becky had her phone out, recording everything. I just stood in the corner and ignored them all.

As the minutes passed, Alexandria's sobs gradually subsided. Resting her head on Christine's shoulder, she occasionally glanced my way with a look of triumph.

I met her gaze without flinching, determined to prove her wrong. I'd like to see which one of us cracked first.

Finally, someone brought up the footage on a laptop.

On the screen, a girl with her back to the camera stood in front of Alexandria's locker. She was wearing my light gray hoodie.

She quickly pulled Alexandria's performance dress out of the locker and hacked it to pieces with a pair of scissors. When she was done, she locked the locker again and walked away with her head down.

"That's Maggie's hoodie!" Becky shrieked.

The conference room fell deathly silent.Christine sat among the observers, her face pale. Becky kept her head down, not daring to look at me, while Tracy's eyes were red-rimmed."I never looked down on you because you were supposedly sick, and I never looked down on you because of your family background," I said as I stood."Then why did you tell me to request a room transfer on our very first day?" Alexandria cried."Because," I said, meeting her eyes, "what I can't stand isn't depression. It's the way you use other people's empathy as a stepping stone."You could have lived a perfectly good life, but instead, you chose to destroy someone else's reputation to get ahead. And in my past life, you drove me to my death, one step at a time."Alexandria was stunned. "I... I never tried to drive you to your death!""Didn't you?" I scoffed. "You made the entire campus believe I was a monster who bullied you. You pressured my parents into telling me to take the blame just to keep the p

After reading through the messages, I locked my phone.Marie asked if I wanted to post everything online right away, and I shook my head."Not yet. I want Alexandria to drop her mask herself, right in front of everyone."Having evidence wasn't enough. I wanted to see what card Alexandria would play next.By the time the video reached that point, the office had fallen completely silent.Tracy's face was deathly pale. When Becky was called in, she was trembling from head to toe."I... I didn't know Alexandria had shredded her own dress!" she stammered. "She just asked me to help her post online, saying Maggie was bullying her. I thought it was true."I stared at her. "So, you posted my photo all over the internet without checking a single fact, putting me at risk of being doxed?"Becky burst into tears. "I was wrong! I'm sorry!"Christine stood up. "I'd felt for a while that something wasn't right, but I never imagined she'd be this malicious.""You felt something was off?" I

The campus forum soon published a formal clarification as well. The fabricated text message screenshot had been verified as fake. Although the profile picture and username were real, Alexandria had created the conversation herself using an alternate account. The student forum released the full forensic verification report. The screenshot's timestamp, IP address, and device logs all matched Alexandria's secondary account. The comment section exploded once again.[They traced it back to her alt account? What does Alexandria have to say now?][And her mom came all the way to campus to cry. Like mother, like daughter.][We demand that the administration release the full disciplinary results!]...Steven sent me a message.[The administration has decided to initiate a formal Honor Council disciplinary hearing. We've also investigated Becky Layne's account. She helped Alexandria publish some of those posts.]I replied immediately.[I've already archived and documented all of Becky

My mother fell silent for a moment before letting out a heavy sigh."It's not that I don't believe you. I'm just afraid you can't win against them."I ended the call and went through every piece of evidence on my phone one more time. Every audio recording and screenshot had a clear timestamp.Just then, a message from Marie popped up.[Karen Oram sent me the files. We got Alexandria's private chat logs. Ready to check them out?]I took a deep breath and opened the file.It wasn't large, just a few hundred kilobytes, but every word inside had the potential to destroy Alexandria. My heart pounded as I stared at the screen. Now only one final step remained.Outside my window, the sky gradually brightened with the approaching dawn.It was time to close the net.I picked up my phone and began typing. Then I published all the evidence at once, leaving Alexandria no room to wriggle out of it.I included the complete, unedited footage from the second camera angle, the official veri

Tracy tried to protest, but one sharp look from Steven silenced her.Cecelia came over to me and lowered her voice. "I can issue an official verification statement regarding that document."I nodded. "I also need her authentic medical records."She gave me a reassuring look. "I'll see what I can do."I gathered the materials from the table and carefully packed them into my manila folder. These sheets of paper were worth more than a thousand tears.Tears would dry up, but evidence wouldn't disappear. As the hearing broke up, Alexandria brushed past me and leaned close to whisper in my ear, "You're going to regret this!"I stopped and turned to look at her.She added darkly, "You're not the only one who knows how to gather evidence."...Three days later, Alexandria's mother, Isabel Clarke, showed up on campus. She stood outside our dorm building and began wailing at the top of her lungs. "My daughter really does have depression!"Are you all trying to drive her to suicide? M

Backstage, Alexandria wiped away her tears and shot Becky a subtle look. That night, she texted me.[Maggie, you're not going to win.]I stared at the message and took a screenshot.[That's exactly what I was waiting to hear.]The screen showed that she was typing, but after a long wait, no reply came.I then sent messages to Professor Cecelia Fernsby from the Student Mental Health Center and Marie Yates, my senior in the journalism department.Around midnight, Marie finally texted back.[I checked the report. Something is off. Are you still up? I'll send you a side-by-side comparison.]I sat up in bed and stared at my screen, knowing the real show was coming.I sent a voice message to both of them."I want her to finish putting on this act in front of everyone.""Got it."...The hearing came the following day.The atmosphere was even more tense than during the rehearsal incident.Alexandria sat directly across from me, her eyes swollen from crying.
