She found me exactly eleven days after my wedding, in the one place I thought was safe.

The clearing behind the old training grounds had been mine since I was twelve, a gap in the pines where moonlight pooled like spilled milk and nobody ever bothered to look for the Alpha's new wife. I went there to breathe. I went there to hold the ledger's words in my head without my face giving anything away to the staff, to Kael, to anyone.

I did not expect Selene.

She stepped out from between two trees like she'd been standing there the whole time, waiting, and maybe she had. Moonlight caught the sharp line of her cheekbone, turned her dark eyes nearly black. She wasn't smiling this time.

"You found it," she said. Not a question.

My whole body went still. "Found what?"

"Don't." Her voice cracked on the word, one syllable of real feeling breaking through whatever careful mask she usually wore. "Don't stand there and lie to me, Luna. I've watched you for a week. You stopped smiling at him in front of people. You stopped touching him unless someone's watching. You *found it*."

I said nothing. My silence was answer enough.

She laughed, short and ugly, and wrapped her arms around herself like she was cold, though the night was warm and thick with the smell of pine sap. "Do you know how long I loved him?"

"Kael?"

"Six years." She spat the number like it tasted foul. "Six years I served that pack. Six years I told myself that when the merger was done, when he had what he needed from your bloodline, he'd finally choose me. That's what he promised."

The ground seemed to tilt under my feet. "He promised you."

"He promised me *everything*." Her voice climbed, cracked again, and this time she didn't fight it. "Your land. Your bloodline rights. Your father's territory folded into his like it was always supposed to be his. And you, sweet, stupid Luna, you were supposed to be a formality. A signature. A womb, if the elders got their way about heirs."

Something in my chest turned to ice. I'd read the ledger. I'd seen the numbers, the transfer schedules, the cold clinical language of a business deal wearing a wedding dress. But hearing her say it out loud, in that clearing, with the moon watching, made it real in a way ink on paper never could.

"He rejected you," I said slowly, understanding arriving late and heavy. "His fated mate. He rejected the bond."

"In front of the whole council." Her hands curled into fists at her sides, nails biting crescents into her palms. I could smell copper on the air, faint, sharp. "He looked me in the eye and told them he chose the Everly girl for the good of the pack. For *duty*. And everyone applauded him for it. Called him noble. Called him strong." Her lip curled. "Nobody called him what he actually is."

"Selene." I held up my hands, palms out, the way you'd approach something wounded and dangerous. "I didn't know. I swear to you, I didn't know any of this until eleven days ago."

"That doesn't matter anymore."

"It matters to me."

"IT DOESN'T MATTER!" Her scream tore through the clearing, sent birds exploding out of the branches above us in a panicked clatter of wings. She was shaking now, full body tremors, the kind that come right before a shift. "You have his name. You have his bed. You have everything I bled six years for, and you didn't even *want* it. You'd give it back if you could, wouldn't you? Just hand it over like it's nothing."

"Yes." The word came out of me before I could stop it, fast and true. "Yes, I would. Take it. Take him. I don't want any of this."

For half a second, something flickered across her face. Hope, maybe. The ghost of a different ending.

Then it hardened again, worse than before.

"You think it's that simple," she said, voice dropping to something low and terrible. "You think I can just walk up to the council and say, oh, actually, Luna's changed her mind, let's swap her out like a defective part. It's done, Luna. The bloodline rights are signed. Your father's territory is folded in. I served six years for nothing, and it's *because of you.*"

"That's not fair."

"Fair?" She laughed again, and this time it had no humor in it at all, just something raw and broken scraping its way out of her throat. "You want to talk to me about fair? I watched him put a ring on your finger tonight, eleven days ago, and I stood in the dark and I smiled and I clapped, because that's what you do when your whole life gets handed to someone else. Don't you dare talk to me about fair."

The air around her shifted, thickened, that particular pressure that comes right before a wolf loses the fight to stay human. Her eyes flashed gold at the edges, a warning I recognized a half second too late, my own instincts screaming at me to run even as my feet stayed rooted to the ground.

"Selene, wait, we can figure this out, there has to be another way, please, just wait, *listen* to me, I never wanted any of this, I never asked for any of it, please just—"

She wasn't listening anymore.

Her shoulders dropped low, feet spreading into a stance I'd only ever seen in training rings, controlled and lethal and nothing like the trembling, weeping woman who'd stood before me a moment ago.

"I'm sorry," she said, and I almost believed she meant it. "I'm so sorry, Luna. But I can't let you have what should have been mine."

She moved.

I didn't even see the strike coming, just a blur of motion and moonlight and the terrible, animal certainty in her eyes as her hand shot toward me, fingers curved into claws, and the last coherent thought I had was that I never even got to say goodbye to my brother.

  • Reborn to Rewrite My Fate    Chapter 10: What Adrian Carries

He came to me this time in daylight, no climbing through windows, no shadows to hide behind, and somehow that felt more dangerous than anything he'd done in the dark."Damon told you," I said, the moment I opened the door to find him standing on my porch, hands shoved in his pockets, expression carefully blank in a way that told me exactly how much effort it was costing him."Damon told me you found Ivy's file." Adrian's jaw tightened around the name, like it cost him something physical to say it out loud. "He didn't need to convince me to come. I've been debating telling you for weeks. I just kept finding reasons not to.""Why?""Because once I say it, I can't take it back." He glanced past me, into the house, and something in his expression made me step aside without needing to be asked, ushering him in before anyone else could see us together on the porch and add fresh fuel to whatever fire Kael was already tending. We ended up in the small sitting room off the kitchen, the one my

  • Reborn to Rewrite My Fate    Chapter 9: What the Records Don't Say

I spent three days chasing Adrian's warning around in my head before I finally admitted I couldn't just wait for him to hand me the rest of it.*Considerably worse than spread rumors. To someone else. Someone he wanted controlled, and couldn't fully control any other way.*Someone. A name he wouldn't give me, a history he wouldn't explain, and every hour I sat with it, the word curdled a little more in my stomach. In my first life, I'd learned about Kael's true nature only after he'd already killed me by proxy. I wasn't doing that again, waiting patiently for the truth to arrive in its own time while the walls closed in around me.So I went to the one place I knew kept records nobody bothered to hide, because nobody thought anyone would care enough to look. The territorial archive sat three towns over, a dusty building staffed by a single elderly wolf named Corwin who'd catalogued pack disputes and land transfers for longer than I'd been alive. I told him I was researching Everly land

The rumor reached me before breakfast, carried in on Mira's face like bad weather."You need to sit down," she said, bursting into my room without knocking, phone already in her hand."That's never a good opener.""Sit down anyway."I sat, mostly to humor her, and she thrust the phone at me like it might bite. A pack gossip forum, the kind every territory had, half rumor mill and half genuine information network, and right at the top, pinned, was a post that made my stomach curdle before I'd even finished the first line.*Reliable source confirms Everly heir turned down Alpha Draven's proposal after being caught in an affair with a member of her own household staff. Draven declined to comment, out of respect for the Everly family's privacy.*"That's a lie," I said, too loud, my hands going cold around the phone. "That's an outright lie.""I know that. You know that." Mira's jaw was tight. "But half the territory reading this doesn't."Out of respect for the Everly family's privacy. I

She was waiting for me outside the tea house, and my whole body went cold before I even registered why.Three days after the Gathering, and I'd finally convinced myself the tight knot in my chest was easing, that maybe refusing Kael hadn't set anything irreversible into motion yet. Then I stepped out into the afternoon light with a bag of loose leaf tea for my mother, and there she was, leaning against the brick wall like she had nowhere else to be.Selene.Younger than I remembered her from the clearing where she killed me, softer around the edges, none of that raw, unraveling grief carved into her face yet. But her eyes found mine with an intensity that made my stomach drop straight through the pavement, the same sharp, assessing look she'd worn right before her claws found my side."You're Luna Everly," she said. Not a question."I am." I kept my voice even, though my pulse had kicked into a gallop. "And you are?""Selene Veyra." She pushed off the wall, unhurried, and something ab

  • Reborn to Rewrite My Fate    Chapter 6: The Stranger at the Gathering

The first thing I noticed about him was that he wasn't watching me the way everyone else in the room was.It had been two weeks since I refused Kael in front of half the pack council, and word had spread exactly the way I'd known it would, fast and ugly, dressed up as concern for my father's business and my own good sense. The Autumn Gathering was supposed to be neutral ground, a chance for territories to mingle without politics getting in the way, except politics was all anyone wanted to talk about, and I was apparently the evening's favorite subject."There she is," I heard a woman murmur behind a raised glass, not quietly enough. "The girl who said no to Draven.""Foolish," someone else answered. "Or brave. Hard to tell which."*Both,* I thought, and kept walking, chin up, because I'd learned exactly one useful thing from my first life and it was how to smile through a room that wanted to eat you alive.I found a quiet corner near the tall windows, glass of something sparkling and

He walked in wearing the same smile he wore at my funeral, if wolves had funerals, if anyone had bothered to grieve me properly instead of just filing paperwork.Kael Draven filled a doorway the way I remembered, broad shouldered, dark haired, that easy confidence that used to make my chest flutter before I understood what it actually was. Not warmth. Just certainty. The certainty of a man who had never once been told no and didn't expect to start now."Marcus." He clasped my father's hand, all charm, the picture of a respectful suitor. "Thank you for seeing me on short notice.""Kael." My father's voice was careful, neutral, the tone of a man juggling politics he hadn't fully explained to his daughter yet. "You said this was important.""It is." Kael's gaze slid to me, and there it was, right on schedule, the smile that used to undo me completely. "Luna. You look well."*I'm dead in another life because of you,* I thought, and smiled back with nothing behind my eyes at all. "Kael."W
