KELLAN'S P. O. V

There was no dress code.

That was the first thing I noticed when I stepped out of my car. The Lancaster's mansion was grand, not surprising, Charles and I were similar, we preferred that kind of luxury that shouted. The type of wealth that dared you to question it.

Vain? I know. But when you've lived as a poor boy who couldn't afford a suit for his own wedding, you'd tend to show off

A heavy sigh found its way out of me as I took in the other guests, dressed in different shades of gold, navy, burgundy, and Ivory. Not a trace of emerald green anywhere.

Except for me.

And Poppy Lancaster.

She was already on the front steps, her smile widened when my eyes landed on her, Poppy was dressed in an emerald green gown, her lips were painted red.

Red.

The colour Ashley was wearing when she shyly offered me a glass of fruit juice. All of a sudden, the person descending towards me wasn't Poppy Lancaster, but my Ashley, Her chocolate eyes shinning bright as she smiled at me.

ASHLEY'S P.O.VBeing heiress was more demanding and stressful than I could have imagined.Every day since I moved back into the Harrington manor felt like a test and I was yet to prove myself. This was everything I had run away from, yet I'm back, doing the same thing I swore I would never do.Being Genevieve's daughter. As long as we didn't bring up the past, we were mostly fine sharing the same space —and by space, I meant the office where we occupied till we had to retire for the night.I spent my hours reviewing piles and piles of documents, and all the family trees and history I had avoided years before. Also, we plotted out new directions for the family business, while Genevieve made sure I memorized the names and families within our class.Despite being sick, she did so much work and expected too many things from me. I could barely breathe under the weight of her expectations and her lectures, even my pregnancy didn’t give me any reprieve Not that I expected any.“Don’t forget

ASHLEY'S P O. VI had only ever been in Genevieve's office twice.Surprising right? Considering I grew up in this mansion, but that was the truth. This place was too sacred, too much of her's to be anyone else. The butler pushed the doors open“Your office, Ms Harrington,” he said in a professional voice. It took a minute to realize he was referring to me and not to my mother. I nodded absentmindedly, after being referred to as Mrs Langston for years, going back to my old name would take a while to stick I took in a deep breath, the office coming to life before me. So this was where Genevieve spent all her time when she was at home? Running the family business, going over accounts, and proposing deals. This was where she hid from being a mother to me.“It's yours now, Ashley,” Genevieve said softly from behind me “All of it is yours” I didn't turn to her as I took in the spacious office with a big flat screen TV, a circular modern desk, expensive carpet, and a tall bookshelf at the

KELLAN'S P. O. VI tapped on my screen. AgainHer name blinked to life: HomeA hysterical laugh choked in my throat. I had saved her contact as ‘Home’ because, despite everything, she was Home. The place of comfort, where I always wanted to be.The screen went dark again, and I tapped it again. When Ashley called last night, I had left my phone in our bedroom while I took some fresh air on the balcony. It was hard to breathe properly in there, where her presence was still deep in every inch and corner of our home. I had gone back and seen one missed call from Ashley. My heart nearly burst out of my chest, I should have called back, but I couldn't bring myself to. I hesitated, and that felt like giving upBecause I'm a fúcking coward. Because I couldn't bear to hear her say those words to me again, because I was running away from my feelings instead of facing them. Worst of all, I feared that the call had been a mistake. The screen went off again. I ran a hand over my stubble, I was al

ASHELY'S P. O VI didn't sleep that night, or the next, or the one after. Today made it four days since Genevieve left. I didn’t sleep tonight either.I lay on the queen-sized bed, one arm draped over my stomach, the other shielding my eyes from the moonlight spilling through the half-closed blinds. Tonight, like every other night since I moved into the Briarwood, the apartment was quiet.I patted my stomach softly, my baby was asleep now, resting in mommy's tummy. The fact that I was becoming a mother made me see things differently, Genevieve wasn't the best person, but she was still my mom, and as much as I dislike to admit it, we had some good times together. Her words played like a loop in my head. ‘It’s terminal.’‘Come back home and take your place as heiress to the Harringtons.’‘Before I die.’I rolled onto my side and curled like a kitten into myself. For some reason, my eyes stung. It was like being fifteen again. When I used to hide under my bedsheets anytime mom and dad

ASHLEY'S P. O. V“I don't understand” I whispered. Genevieve blinked and glanced out my window, her eyes unfocused. My baby fluttered, this time more strongly, and I had to drag in a breath after another to calm my racing heart. My legs shook like twigs, and I lowered myself to the couch. “I don't understand,” I repeated, this time so quietly, it was almost inaudible.“I'm telling the truth, Ashley. My cancer's been back for months now,” she said as she dropped to my side on the couch. My fingers went numb, and a strange pressure rested on top of my chest, making it hard to drag in air. I raised my face to meet with hers, and my heart.... broke. We stared at each other, too full of emotions choking us to say anything.“Ho..how long?” I croaked out,“It's been four months since my Doctor saw more traces of the cancer” she admitted.I grabbed my throw pillow and tightened my fingers around it, the pressure in my heart intensified.Genevieve wasn't the best mother, but she was my mother
