Marah forced herself to suppress the shiver in her chest and asked again, “Didn’t you say the driver just had to pay a fine? How did it suddenly turn into…” —she didn’t finish, but the word “death” hung heavily in the air.

The driver had been released after the crash. Since Adela hadn’t suffered any serious injuries, he was only facing a massive compensation bill—a sum that meant nothing to Bard.

But still, the news of the driver’s sudden death rattled Marah. Only for a second, though. She knew she’d already passed the point of no return. If she wanted Layson, there was no turning back. All she could do now was charge straight ahead.

A flicker of cold cruelty passed through Bard’s eyes. “If it were just Layson, I wouldn’t have had to sacrifice that driver. But someone else has stepped in. If I didn’t get rid of him, they’d have ripped me out by the roots.”

Marah froze, staring at Bard in stunned silence, fear crawling up her spine.

If Bard had taken this matter to his powerful mother,

Adela hesitated for a moment. “It’s been this long… Juliet still hasn’t been released?”Evelyn smoothed out the pleats on one of the gowns, her expression casual. She never had a good impression of Juliet to begin with, but she didn’t care enough to follow up. “Maybe. That depends on when your brother Liam cools off.”Liam Walton had been trying everything to make up for the twenty-something years of lost siblinghood. Juliet had walked straight into the fire—honestly, he was already being merciful.Evelyn had no intention of provoking Liam further over such a person.Adela bit her lip. “And that girl earlier—will she cause you trouble?”That was what Adela truly worried about. Evelyn had taken the fall for her in order to keep her identity hidden. If Juliet’s best friend ended up stirring more trouble that hurt Evelyn’s reputation, Adela would feel unbelievably guilty. But Evelyn just waved her off. “What are you worried about? The Walton family isn’t that easy to mess with. And besid

Adela glanced down at her phone. Evelyn had sent her the suite number—2301. She pressed the 23rd floor button and leaned back, casting a quick glance at Helen. The girl looked so young, it was almost unbelievable she worked as a driver. But from her cold and distant demeanor, Adela could tell she was all business. One glance was enough; she looked away right after.Every time the elevator stopped, Adela’s heart leapt into her throat—terrified she might suddenly run into Mr. Norman. The man was just… terrifying.Luckily, the ride went uninterrupted. When she got to Suite 2301, the door was already open. Adela knocked a few times before stepping in, and instantly a few girls inside turned their gazes toward her. They were clearly the models for the upcoming runway show. One of them, upon seeing Adela, seemed a little uncomfortable—quickly turning her head away. Adela searched her memory. The girl did look vaguely familiar, but she couldn’t place where she’d seen her before.Just then, E

Barnes didn’t take long to wrap up the investigation. Before 9 a.m., his call came through.“Boss, there’s been a rumor going around these past two days about Mr. Norman’s car. I’ve sent the details to your email.”Layson tapped his cigarette on the edge of the ashtray as he opened the email. A quick scan was all it took. His expression didn’t change. Leaning back in his chair, he exhaled a thin stream of smoke, his half-lidded eyes giving nothing away.He pretty much got what his father was trying to do.Blunt, but effective. Very on brand.Layson chuckled, lips curling in amused disdain. Looks like it’s time to get that driver situation sorted. Two days later, Adela met the driver Layson had arranged for her.A young, mixed-race woman. 5'9"—in flats.Adela was stunned on the spot.“Wait... she’s really a driver? She doesn’t look like one,” she whispered to Layson. The woman’s sharp eyes made her feel like she had nowhere to hide. The driver walked over, smiling and extending her han

When Richard got the phone call, it was just before lunch. Diana was in the middle of setting the table, and the moment she saw his face darken, she wisely said nothing—not wanting to trigger his bad mood.Lunch was usually just the two of them, with Dexter occasionally dropping by.Richard’s brows remained furrowed all the way through dinner. And the moment he laid eyes on Adela, his gaze turned sharp as a blade, making her nervous as hell.During the meal, she kept edging closer to Layson, while Dexter, who sat across from him, frowned. He finally broke the silence and grumbled,“Dad, what is it with you today? Can’t we just have a peaceful dinner without you turning it into a war zone?”Silence dropped like a stone across the table. Even Marah looked over, stunned.Sure, Richard wasn’t exactly close with his sons, and the two boys mostly treated him like a ghost. They’d mastered the art of mutual avoidance. So for Dexter to speak up? That was... unexpected.Had he lost his mind?Ri

Evelyn gently shook her head and placed a warm hand over Adela’s pale fingers.“I’m fine. But you—you’re too polite. No matter what, I’ve always seen you as a real friend.”Adela looked down at the smooth hand resting on hers, her heart tangled in emotion. She could feel Evelyn’s sincerity, the affection she so naturally gave. But she didn’t know how to respond. With her head slightly bowed, her delicate neck was revealed—vulnerable and apologetic.Evelyn didn’t pull her hand away. Her voice remained soft and gentle.“Adela, I just want to be your friend. You don’t need to feel pressured. We both graduated from top schools, both majored in design, share similar values, and even see fashion in the same light. Forget that you’re Layson’s girlfriend or…” —she hesitated—“Liam’s younger sister. Even without those things, if we met anywhere, anytime, we would’ve been friends. I truly believe that.”Adela stared at her, stunned. Her heart swelled with a bittersweet warmth, a mix of surprise

  • Reclaiming His Runaway Baby Mama   308 An Alliance Formed

Layson’s car was instantly recognizable. Jason was a bit surprised—he knew Richard didn’t get along with either of his sons. So if the second son was suddenly driving his car, was this some kind of unexpected show of fatherly love?He hadn’t even wrapped his head around the thought when Richard’s voice came casually from the other end of the line, not sounding concerned at all:“It’s Layson’s girlfriend. The girl insisted on going out. I just sent someone to follow along.”Jason furrowed his brows, mentally chewing on that response.“So… you’ve accepted her as your daughter-in-law, then?”There was no reply.Jason realized he might’ve overstepped. He was well aware that his niece had feelings for Layson. As long as Richard didn’t formally acknowledge Adela as part of the family, most people would just treat it like a casual fling between the younger generation.Dating and marriage were two very different things—especially in their circle. The older generation still leaned toward arran
