Chapter 67 - Gael

Fighting the hydra was a lot like trying to wrangle a toddler into a fancy dress. Two of us had to hold it down while the third handled the business end.

At least, that was our experience trying to get Fati into dresses as a kid.

Jareth cast a deflection spell over us, reflecting any direct attacks from the hydra back at it. It kept us safe, but the deflected strikes still got a little too close for comfort.

With the spell holding, Jareth moved into distraction mode while Hakeem, Meredith, and I went to work hacking at the hydra’s neck. Everything was going fine—until Jareth slipped on a rock. The hydra turned its attention to us.

When it focused on Meredith, Hakeem jumped in front of her, slashing at its open maw. But the beast’s saliva hit him, burning through his shirt and skin like acid.

Hakeem’s scream of agony and Meredith’s cry of his name will haunt my nightmares.

“Tesoro!” I screamed.
