048: Duty and Honor

[Primus]

Everything freezes as my heart seizes and my mind falls into darkness. On some level, I can still hear Eleanora speaking, spewing some nonsense about how Carnelia was captured, and how they treated her body with care, but her words are nonsense to my ears as all the air rushes out of me and my body grows cold and numb. There is no way that Carnelia and our last remaining egg of this brood is gone–I’d have felt her leave me, just like I felt her passing before.

Terrified, I reach along the connection between myself and Carnelia. Our bond has always been strong, from our first mating, made even stronger after our marriage, and later, the birth of our children. Each link between us forges a chain of love and strengthens us, allowing our thoughts, feelings, and even dreams to be shared. It is a rare thing to find one's fated mate, and even more rare in our world to be given the freedom to claim them. Bonds like our are rare.

  • Redemption of The Dragon Prince   049: Beg Me

Eleanora's excitement dances in her eyes as her irises swirl in shades of blue and bright silver. She thinks she's won, that she's just been handed everything she has desired. In her mind, her path to power has been secured, her long wait over, and her torture finally ended. "Do you swear it?” Eleanora’s eyes flash a bright silver. “Do you swear on your name and honor that you will do everything I ask of you if I release your family?” "I do swear," I declare resolutely, confirming my pledge in a strong, deep voice that falls around us like heavy stones in an otherwise silent room. "If you free my family, leave them alone, remove all guards from watching them, I'll do whatever it is that the Queen of Luxandra asks of me." If I were any other drake, as soon as I got what I wanted, I'd simply go back on my word, but Eleanora knows how much my honor means to me. I am not just any noble–I’m a dragon prince, and the true heir of the Luxandrian throne. Because of that honor, like many

  • Redemption of The Dragon Prince   047: A Long Way from Home

[Carnelia]I never expected that the name that would spring from her lips would be the same as the name I first encountered at the beginning of this adventure, in the pages of a children’s book read to me by my mate before I even understood what a mate really was. Even before I knew what it was to be a dragon, that name had importance to me. That book was the first book I ever read. My name, Carnelia, was picked from its pages. Oaestr is the mother of all dragonkind. The first of us. Surely she isn’t that Oaestr. I’m not even sure that she was ever anything more than a fantasy story told to hatchlings to help them make sense of the confusing world we live in. “Did your parents name you for The Mother of Us All?” I ask casually, keeping my tone light. “I’ve never met another Oaestr.” “Nor have I,” the drakaina smiles, tilting her head. “It’s a unique name. But all of us have individual names. We don’t repeat names here,” she explains. “We are hatched in batches.”Batches? It reminds

  • Redemption of The Dragon Prince   046: The Navigator

[Carnelia] Leaving my father and the queen of the moon dragons behind, I turn and let myself fall away from their reality. Their voices call out to me, begging me to return, to wait, but they come to me slowly, out of sync with me as I become one with the darkness itself. I can’t wait to hear their words or heed their warnings. I need my mate. I need Primus. Now that I have found my true nature, I need him to hold me together before I shatter into a thousand insubstantial pieces of soul. But when I reach out to find him, to grasp our connection, my mind and spirit can’t get a solid hold. It's as if he’s so far away that I cannot reach him anymore. Maybe dying a second time has destroyed that connection. I need to find him, to reestablish our bond. To make him mine again. “Primus,” I speak into the cold dark around me as my body melts. “Wait for me.” Looking down at my hands, my glowing child is growing colder and colder as my skin fades to black. She cannot stay here with me. Th

  • Redemption of The Dragon Prince   045: Never Yours

[Primus] There’s a heavy weight to my father’s crown. Crafted from the earth stained with the blood of the sun dragon army, he had taken the raw ore and placed it on his head, bending it to his will with the rush of victory thrumming through his body. It was during the decisive battle, the one that put Luxandra on top, freeing them from Solarian oppression. My mother had been by his side, her celestial forces having changed the tide of the war in our favor. She was madly in love with my father when she handed him the rubies that are now woven into the crown itself. The crown is more than just a symbol of power; it is also a symbol of unending love. Because no matter

  • Redemption of The Dragon Prince   044: Blood and Empires

[Primus] As a grown drake nearing his first century of life, it is a rare occasion that I’ve felt true fear. In fact, I could count those moments on a single hand–watching my wife lay her first clutch, not knowing if she could survive; Seeing my mother die in an explosion of light; waking up under the control of The Technician to be used and abused by the queen herself. And finally, when my wife was taken from me again, tortured, and I witnessed her death, feeling it across continents. Which is why my sudden fear feels so alien. I am not really ill, and The Technician is on my side. My wife is alive, and growing in power, and my children are safe. And yet, as I stand in this dark chamber with the queen, a pale vision who moves like a ghostly viper sliding across the floor in long, graceful movements, has me frozen in place. I am a little more than trapped prey, hand-delivered by her favorite hunter. The cold glass of the vial slowly warms in my hand, and I feel it churn and twirl a
