Chapter 4

Author: Green Pick
The basement was a gloomy, wet place that made me shiver from the cold. I could only wrap my arms around myself to try and stay warm.

At some point, my face started to feel hot. I must have had a fever, but I was too weak to yell for help. I drifted off and had fragmented dreams.

I dreamed about being little again, back before my parents adopted Becky and back when I was their only kid. Dad would laugh and let me ride on his shoulders, spinning me around, while Mom would snap lots of goofy photos.

Suddenly, it was young Becky on Dad's shoulders, and they looked like the perfect family. Meanwhile, I just watched from the side.

I dreamed about Ellison too, about the time he told me he liked me in high school. He was less sure of himself back then but just as serious. He handed me a love letter without a smile on his face.

Then, in a flash, Becky was holding his hand, and all I could see were their backs as I tried to catch up.

When I woke up, my face was wet with tears.

The door to the basement swung open, and the butler gave me a nod. "Ms. Gilbert, Mr. Gilbert says you've been punished enough. You can go now."

I dried my tears, hauled up my heavy body, and went straight to my room to pack. I was not just leaving the basement. I was leaving this house for good.

I did not want my last days to be filled with pain. I just wanted to find a quiet place to be alone and let go.

Mom saw me packing and said in a flat voice, "Ellison and Becky are already on their trip. It's too late for you to catch up with them now."

I stopped for a second, then turned and gave her a weak smile. "Sorry, but I want to go have some fun for a few days."

"Whatever you want. Why didn't you say so sooner? What was with the attitude? Just finish packing and leave quickly. I'm tired of seeing that gloomy face of yours." She did not see the strain in my smile and just teased me like always.

She did not know that her wish was about to come true. She would not have to see me or be bothered by me anymore.

I checked my phone, and there it was—Becky had posted a bunch of updates on her trip with Ellison. They had been to so many places—climbing mountains, watching the ocean, sharing drinks, and walking through forests...

I had been to some of those places with Ellison; others, I had not.

However, looking at those photos, I was not sad anymore. I even felt a little relieved.

Now, Ellison would only have memories with Becky.

As I stepped out with my suitcase, Mom was busy in the kitchen but threw out a, "Be careful and come back soon."

I felt a lump in my throat but managed not to cry.

She always said that when I left. However, she did not know that this time, I was not coming back.

When Ellison got home, Becky rushed up to him."I'm so glad you're back, Ellison! When you hung up the phone, I was afraid you didn't want me anymore..."However, Ellison just frowned and gently pushed her away.He did not notice Becky's face go stiff as he walked straight into the living room from the front hall."The wedding today is off."In the living room, I watched Mom let out a deep sigh."It's okay, Ellison. We all understand you're worried about Becky. She's had quite a scare, and it's only right that you'd rush back to be with her instead of getting married—""That's not it."Ellison cut her off, and after a long pause, where his throat seemed to struggle with the words, he finally spoke. His voice was hoarse and shaky."I'm sorry, Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert."Lily... she's gone..."A hush fell over the whole living room.I did not know how much time had passed before I heard a loud crash.Mom's glass had hit the floor, shattering into a million pieces."What did you

I never thought that after I die, I would really turn into a spirit, just floating around without any weight or warmth. There I was, floating above it all, gazing down at the body on the bed that had turned stone cold. The cheeks hollow, the skin a sickly yellow – even I was scared by the sight.I wished I could have left the world a bit more gracefully.I tried to smile at the empty air, mocking myself, when suddenly the door swung open. Janet and Ellison walked in.Ellison froze as soon as he saw the bed. He stood there, not moving, until he finally took a couple of steps closer. He stared at the pale, thin face for what seemed like forever, as if he could not believe what he was seeing. It was not until he touched my cold hand that he collapsed next to the bed, crying in a way I had never seen before. His sobs were deep and full of pain. However, to me, it was all so strange.I had thought he was so kind to Becky because he liked her. Then I was gone, shouldn't they be happy

"What...?" Ellison could barely speak. His hand shook as he took the hairpin, not wanting to believe any of it."Ms. Gilbert died of liver cancer," the woman said."This hairpin... she left it behind. She won't be coming to the wedding. You don't have to wait for her anymore."Her voice was so loud this time, almost everyone could hear."No way!" Ellison shouted, his voice shaking."She was just fine before. How could she have liver cancer? She was excited about today... about our wedding..."And who are you? Why should I believe a stranger?"The woman, without a word, pulled out two more things. One was a cancer screening report. The report had Lily's name, her details, and the words "advanced liver cancer" written on it.Next to it was Lily's cell phone. The woman turned on the phone and showed him a picture of them together."My name's Janet, her best friend from high school."She wanted to spend her last days with me, to have some peace and quiet."I said yes, of cour

I'll be with you to the very end."So, I stayed at her place from then on.The cancer got worse.
