Chapter 3

Author: uni
Everyone was waiting for my answer, eager to see me humiliate myself. Right on cue, the grand doors flew open, and a suffocating, terrifying pressure swept through the entire hall like a tidal wave.

Cael had arrived.

He stood nearly six-foot-seven, with broad shoulders and a tapered waist, his custom suit barely containing his explosive muscle mass. But his crimson eyes were swimming with a dark, barely restrained urge for violence and slaughter. Just by standing there, his chaotic, raw magical aura made everyone's primal instincts scream run.

The crowd immediately scrambled away, terrified this ticking time bomb of a dragon would snap.

I opened my mouth to say, “I'm marrying Cael,” but the old King's warning flashed in my mind. “Since you chose the eldest, I will honor it. But keep your mouth shut until I officially announce it.” The power struggles inside the Dragon Fortress were lethal, and every faction had their eyes on the throne. I swallowed my words.

Cael didn't say a word. He just locked his oppressive crimson eyes onto me, a fleeting shadow of dark disappointment passing through them.

I ignored Aaron and turned to leave. But Rose wasn't done playing her games. She intentionally blocked my path, smugly flashing the Starlight Bracelet on her wrist.

“Lady Quinn, even if you do manage to trap Aaron into a marriage, you'll never have his heart.”

Rose always acted like a harmless little bunny in public, but the moment she thought nobody was looking, she bared her fangs. Looking at her, I flashed back to my past life—catching them red-handed in my own bed. She had cowered beneath Aaron’s dragon wings, trembling like a victim, while Aaron partially shifted into his dragon form, snarling savagely to protect her from me. That sight had literally made me faint from pure rage.

Later, the King exiled her to the Dark Lands, but Aaron never let her go, directing all his hatred toward me. Fine. In this life, I’ll gladly play matchmaker.

I let out a soft chuckle. “Yeah, if I don't have his heart, why the hell would I want his body? I hope you two are very happy together.”

Rose froze, then narrowed her eyes with a cold smirk. “Keep talking a big game. We all know you're just dying inside. Aaron only loves me.”

I had zero interest in entertaining her further and tried to step around her. But suddenly, her eyes brimmed with fake tears. “Lady Quinn, I just wanted to share my happiness with you. Why do you have to be so cold? I know you're jealous of me, but you can't force someone to love you.”

With that, she actually started crying. I instinctively reached out to push past her. Seizing the moment, she threw herself onto the floor, wailing at the top of her lungs, “Lady Quinn! How could you lay your hands on me?!”

Right on cue, Aaron charged into the scene.

“Quinn, what the hell is wrong with you?!” he roared, his dragon tail tearing through his trousers in fury. “Rose is your maid, not your slave! Who gave you the right to put your hands on her?!”

I looked at him, then down at Rose, and almost laughed out of sheer absurdity. “Rose, don't you get tired of acting?”

Slap!

A heavy backhand struck my cheek, leaving a burning sting. Aaron’s eyes were bloodshot as he bellowed, “I won't let you disrespect her!”

That night, after the rowdy lords and wedding guests finally cleared out of the bridal chambers, I changed into a soft silk nightgown and slid into the massive, fur-lined bed.Cael walked out of the dressing room, looking incredibly stiff. The fierce, terrifying commander of the dragon legions was currently blushing so hard his face looked like a fireball.I giggled, patting the space next to me. “We’re literally married, Cael. What are you so nervous about? Don't tell me the future Dragon King plans on sleeping on the couch?”He cleared his throat, cautiously sliding into bed next to me. I immediately leaned my head against his shoulder, lifting his hand to playfully trace the sharp, black scales lightly coating his knuckles.“I have a question,” I murmured. “We barely interacted before the betrothal. Why are you so fiercely good to me?”“What do you mean?” his voice was a deep, raspy purr.“Weren’t you worried about what the court would say? That you were inheriting your younger brot

On the morning of the solstice, the sun hadn’t even broken over the horizon when the mages began doing my hair and makeup. When the time came, Cael lifted me effortlessly into the royal carriage. As we rode toward the cathedral, I stole a glance at his profile. He was completely different from Aaron. Aaron was the classic, arrogant bad-boy archetype. Cael was intimidatingly stoic, his jawline sharp, his lips pressed into a thin line. They say men with lips that thin are cold-hearted. But I had seen him flip the world upside down just to avenge my ghost. A profound sense of peace washed over me.Suddenly, the carriage ground to a violent halt.Outside, Aaron was standing dead center in the middle of the imperial highway. He was wearing a formal groom’s suit, complete with a wedding boutonnière, his eyes bloodshot and completely crazed. He had actually dared to ambush a royal wedding procession. The man was entirely insane.Cael immediately stepped out of the carriage, and I followed, st

I walked down to the courtyard, looking at him with utter detachment. “Are you delusional? I thought your heart belonged to Rose.”Seeing me approach, Aaron scrambled to his feet, trying to close the distance, but Rose desperately grabbed his boot from the ground.“Quinn, listen to me, it was all a misunderstanding!” Aaron yelled, completely ignoring the weeping girl at his feet. “I was just confused. You’re the only one who matters to me. I swear it.”“Really? Because that’s a complete 180 from your original pitch,” I replied, crossing my arms. “What happened to 'we marry, but we各玩各的 (each do our own thing) and you don't touch my private life'?”Aaron’s face paled. “I was joking! I was just being stupid and trying to act tough. I would never treat you like that.”He looked so frantic, so utterly desperate, that if I hadn't actually lived through his toxic betrayal, I might have believed him.Rose, hearing his words, completely broke down. “Aaron! How can you say that? You told me you

Within days, the kingdom was flooded with rumors. People said Aaron had nearly started a civil war over me, and that because I chose Cael, Aaron was throwing himself entirely into the arms of my family's maid, Rose.I ignored all of it. My wedding with Cael was locked in for the following month.Midway through the preparations, Cael caught me alone in the palace gardens. He stood there for a long time, his crimson eyes tracking my every move with an incredibly complex expression before he finally spoke.“If you’re having second thoughts... tell me now,” his voice was a low, gravelly rumble. “I will take the blame. I’ll tell my father I called it off. I know... I know you used to look at Aaron.”“Why would I ever have second thoughts?” I asked, stepping closer.“Because everyone knows I’m a liability,” he muttered, fists clenching. “My mind snaps, Quinn. I’m dangerous.”Looking at him now—so protective yet so heartbreakingly cautious—I thought of how he had avenged me in the dark future

The grand hall instantly erupted into chaos.“What the hell? Why him?” “I thought Quinn was head over heels for Aaron. Why did she choose the psycho?” “Seriously, there’s no way. This has to be a mistake.”Aaron’s face flushed a violent, angry red. He lunged forward, his voice cracking. “Father, you’ve got it wrong. Tell me this is a joke!”The Dragon King shot him a freezing glare. “I might be old, Aaron, but I am neither deaf nor blind. A matter of the royal succession is not something I 'get wrong.'”The chief herald stepped up, holding out a heavy leather scroll case. “The King has spoken. Lady Quinn has chosen Lord Cael as her betrothed.”“No! No way!” Aaron cut him off, completely losing his cool. He spun toward me, his eyes wide and desperate. “Quinn, tell them. You chose me, right? Father just misread the parchment. Tell them!”I let out a cold, sharp laugh. “I chose Cael, Aaron. Deal with it.”Hearing me use his name so definitively, Cael’s head snapped up. His Crimson eyes wi

My cheek burned with a sharp, throbbing pain. My fist automatically clenched to hit him back, but out of the corner of my eye, I saw the nobility closing in to watch. To keep the ball from devolving into a complete circus, I forcefully suppressed my rage and stared at them with icy silence.Rose buried her face in Aaron’s chest, a smug, victorious grin playing on her lips.Aaron seemed to realize he had struck me a bit too hard; his hand twitched as if he wanted to reach out. But Rose instantly locked her arms around his. “Aaron, I think some glass dust got in my eye... it hurts so bad...”The whispering nobles started pointing fingers.“Isn't that the eldest daughter of the Celtic family? Throwing a violent tantrum and hitting her own maid over a man? Humans really are classless peasants.”Aaron’s face instantly twisted back into disgust. “Apologize to Rose right now, Quinn! God, what a mistake it was ever getting involved with a toxic woman like you. Real bad luck.”His frat-boy syco
