Vienna’s POV

After Warren had shown up at the restaurant last night and warned me about Desiree, I just couldn’t shake the feeling I was being watched.

Even at home, every shadow seemed alive. Every flicker of movement outside the window made my heart skip a beat.

I kept catching glimpses of something in the corner of my eye—a silhouette in the garden, a figure slipping behind the hedge.

Could it be Desiree or one of her sidekicks, creeping closer to get their revenge? Or was it just my imagination running wild?

I double-checked the locks, peered out through the blinds. Earlier this morning, I even thought I heard footsteps in the hallway, only to realize it was Oliver rolling his toy car across the floor.

"Am I losing my mind?" I muttered to myself.

Clearly, I was. Because other than the shadows, there was also… Warren. Somehow, I just couldn’t get him out of my head.

He could’ve been killed last night. And the first thing he did afterward was make sure I was safe.

I mean, sure,

Warren’s POVWhen I stepped into the restaurant and spotted Vienna, it felt like I could finally breathe again. No Desiree in sight. No sign of trouble. But then my gaze slid to the man sitting across from her. Fred. That damned, ever-present shadow who always seemed glued to her side.My shoes thudded against the floor as I strode straight to their table."Vienna, can I have a word?" My voice was clipped, urgent. I shot Fred a look. "Alone."Fred leaned back in his chair, eyebrows arched. "What’s this about?""Desiree," I said simply. The effect was immediate. Fred and Vienna exchanged a glance—eyes wide, muscles tensing."Shit," Fred muttered. "What happened?""I said I need to speak to Vienna. Alone," I repeated. My tone left no room for argument.Fred raised his hands in mock surrender. "Alright, alright. I’ll go check on the staff." He stood, disappearing toward the kitchen.I slid into his seat. Vienna sat there in paint-splattered clothes, hair pulled back into a messy bun. She

Vienna’s POVAfter Fred finished work, he picked me up from the renovation site. He’d insisted on taking me out to dinner. His way of prying me away from my worries about Desiree. Now we sat at a table in Royal Taste. Tonight, instead of wearing an apron and making pastries, I was holding a wine glass and basking in soft candlelight."Your bakery looks amazing already, V," Fred said between bites. "From what my father told me, it was a complete wreck just a week ago. You’ve clearly been putting in the work."I smiled. "I have. Honestly, it’s the only thing keeping me sane through all the chaos. Moving back to Kingsford has brought a lot of… unexpected encounters.""I heard about Célestine…" His voice softened. "That must’ve been a shock.""It was," I admitted. "I can’t believe they started dating again."Fred nodded thoughtfully. "I guess real love knows no age."His words landed heavier than I expected. Had my reaction the other night been selfish? Shouldn’t I be happy for Harold that

Warren’s POV"Why the hell are you doing this for her?" I asked, my voice tight as I stared down the barrel of the gun. "Bailing her out, threatening me? Desiree betrayed you, Wayne. Or did you forget already?"Wayne let out a deep, ugly chuckle. "Why do you think, Warren? Have you looked at the woman?"Desiree gave him a sultry smile, walking toward him with a slow, deliberate sway of her hips. She leaned in close, her lips brushing his ear, and whispered something I couldn’t fully catch—except for two words. "…reward later."Disgusting.But while Wayne was distracted, my fingers inched into my pocket, brushing against my phone. I pressed the power button three times in quick succession. If it worked, 911 should be on the line soon. I just had to keep these two talking long enough for someone to get here.Wayne’s gaze raked over Desiree like a predator. She turned back to me, her eyes glinting. "In case you haven’t noticed, I always get what I want. You were the only exception."I s

Warren’s POVI couldn’t wipe the smile off my face. No matter how hard I tried to focus on the reports stacked in front of me. Vienna had drunk-texted me last night, basically admitting she was still attracted to me. It was bold, unexpected. And honestly, it sent my confidence soaring.I shook my head in disbelief at my own luck. First, I’d run into her completely by chance, and now this message? My love life had been a mess for years. Maybe—just maybe—the scales were finally tipping in my favor. The wedding was only two weeks away. I could hardly wait to see her again, to tease her about that text, to catch those tiny glimmers of warmth in her eyes. With the haze of alcohol and a few well-timed jokes and compliments… maybe I could finally break down the walls she’d built around herself. This was my shot, and I wasn’t about to let it slip away.Suddenly, a frantic knock rattled my office door."Come in," I called, straightening in my chair and forcing the smug smile off my face.My

Vienna’s POV"V? What’s wrong?" Bella shouted over the music.I forced a smile. "It’s nothing."She frowned, leaning closer. "Nothing? You look like you’ve seen a ghost."I hesitated. "I thought I saw… Desiree.""What? That’s impossible," she said, her eyes widening. "She’s in jail, remember?"I nodded slowly, trying to convince myself. "Yeah… you’re right. Probably just a lookalike."But even as I said it, the words felt hollow. A gnawing unease clung to me.I tried to drown it in champagne and tequila shots—far too many tequila shots—until my memory of the strange, fleeting vision began to fade. But in its place, something else crept in.A strange longing.Part of me ached for protection… strong, steady arms around me. Arms I trusted. Arms that could make me feel safe. And try as I might to redirect my thoughts, the image that surfaced wasn’t of some faceless man—it was of Warren. Our meeting had stirred something deep inside me. Those muscles rippling beneath his suit, the renewed
