Chapter 4

Author: Ink the Seventh
"Welcome home, madam," the butler Alfred Rogers greeted Sierra as always.

John and Pamela both looked over. Pamela hesitated, then greeted her, "Sierra."

Sierra didn't even glance at her as she headed straight upstairs. She was afraid that if she looked, she wouldn't be able to stop herself from lashing out.

"Pamela just said hello. Didn't you hear her?" John's voice was cold and distant. "Or have you always been this rude, Ms. Bell?"

Sierra stopped in her tracks.

Ms. Bell?

She turned to look at them, and the words came out sharp. "You're already cheating in our home, and you still expect me to be polite?"

"This is my house. I'll do as I please," John replied calmly. "If you don't like it, move out."

Sierra clenched her hands at her sides.

Even though she knew his heart was no longer with her, hearing such cruel words still felt like a knife stabbing her in the chest.

He was the one who had told her this was her home. What belonged to him also belonged to her.

"John, Sierra is still your wife. Isn't that a bit much?" Pamela tried to mediate.

"I gave her a chance. She's the one who refused it," John replied, looking straight at Sierra.

She looked right back at him.

Neither was willing to back down.

"Sierra, why don't you apologize? If you do, John will surely forgive you," Pamela said softly, fanning the flames without making it look overt.

"It's fine. I'm going to move out without your say-so anyway," Sierra replied, her stubbornness on full display. She ignored Pamela completely. "I can't stand to stay one more second in a place that reeks of scumbags and homewreckers. It's going to make me puke."

She turned and headed upstairs, as if afraid something disgusting might catch up with her.

Bang!

She slammed the door.

Inside Sierra's room, she grabbed her suitcase and started packing right away. She knew this was just John trying to provoke her, but she couldn't stand it any longer.

After packing all her important documents, she went to the walk-in closet.

Staring at all the clothes, handbags, and jewelry, she paused for a moment. Then, she headed straight for the jewelry.

She needed money, and selling those things was the quickest way to get some.

But before she could gather everything, John and Pamela walked in.

"Sierra, how can you treat such expensive jewelry so indifferently?" Pamela's eyes were full of envy as she looked at the countless limited-edition and custom pieces. "Are you planning to sell them?"

Sierra didn't bother hiding her attitude. "None of your business."

Pamela glanced at John before continuing, "But these are all gifts from John. How can you just sell them?"

"Stay out of this," Sierra snapped. She wasn't gentle at all when she was angry.

Finally, John spoke up. "I didn't think you were the type to steal jewelry."

Sierra's hand froze mid-air.

Steal?

"If I called the police, how many years will the sentencing be?" John stared at her.

"First of all, we're not even officially divorced yet. Second, you gave these to me, so how is it stealing?" Sierra shot back.

John took a step closer, his gentle tone hiding sharp words. "How can you prove these were gifts and not just part of my collection?"

Sierra was stunned.

And at that moment, she understood. He would never let her take anything from here. He was determined to cut off all her options.

"If you want to take them, I won't stop you. But once the divorce is finalized, I'll call the police and report a theft," John said coldly, leaving no room for compromise.

"Holly is Sierra's friend," John answered directly. "I've already limited how much she can help financially. I can't take away her emotional support, too."Kenneth paused, then smiled.A little over forty minutes later, they pulled up in front of Kenneth's home. He got out and shut the door in one smooth motion.John was about to drive off toward Lakeside Villa when Kenneth called out, "John."John lifted his foot off the gas and glanced over. Before he could speak, Kenneth said, "Stop living in the past. Don't carry that weight around. If he were still here, he wouldn't want to see you like this."John's grip tightened on the steering wheel, his lips pursed. He said nothing in the end."Drive safe. Take it easy," Kenneth said, lifting a hand in a casual wave, as if he could throw a bit of cheer his way.John stepped on the gas and left.On the way back, his thoughts kept drifting to the past, to that radiant, optimistic boy. Famous even when he was still a teenager, his talen

"You're not asleep?" John sat up, his expression giving nothing away."Sleep is nowhere near as fun as watching the drama and sipping tea," Kenneth said.He called the staff outside to bring in two glasses and a bottle of wine. Only after that did he continue."Especially when the drama is centered around you."John didn't respond. The wine and glasses were brought in. Once the staff left, Kenneth opened the bottle, filled both glasses, and pushed one toward John. "You have the story, I have the drinks. Start talking."John looked at him, his eyes hiding too many things at once."Don't stare at me like that. It's creepy," Kenneth joked.John took the glass from him and set it directly on the table.Kenneth paused. "Alright, now I'm really curious. What happened?""Earlier tonight, Tommy asked me two questions," John said, his tone flat. "After I answered, he got mad. Told me to treat him as if he were dead.""What two questions?" Kenneth immediately realized they had to be

John fixed the blanket so Tommy's head was out and he could breathe.Looking at the way the boy squeezed his eyes shut, clearly refusing to acknowledge him, John didn't try to wake him. As always, his voice stayed gentle and patient. "Get some rest. Stop thinking about everything else. No matter what happens between your mom and me, we won't love you any less."Tommy ignored John; he kept his eyes closed and pretended to be asleep.John bent down and planted a goodnight kiss on his small forehead. "Goodnight."Tommy stayed silent.John turned off the light and pulled the door closed. The moment the room went dark, Tommy opened his eyes. The clear eyes that used to be bright and pure were now clouded with something complicated.John left Tommy's room and went to check on Sierra.Sierra was still lying in the same position as before. She was quiet, still, and fast asleep. He sat down on the edge of the bed and watched her sleeping face, her breathing even and steady. She look

Tommy wanted to say no to John.He wanted to take care of his mom himself. Before he could insist, his father picked him up and carried him toward the bedroom, quietly threatening him, "If you don't wash up and go to sleep, I'll tell her tomorrow that I was the one who brought her home."Tommy was a little stunned. "You…""Hurry now," John urged.Tommy stayed where he was. "I'll wait for you."John didn't argue with him. He took the makeup remover into the master bedroom and began to clean Sierra's face with practiced motions. He was very careful with the corners of her eyes and around her lips. When he finished, he used a fresh towel to wipe her face repeatedly until there was nothing left on her skin.Tommy watched it all from the doorway.Old scenes appeared from his memories without warning.Years ago, when Mom went to dinner parties with Dad and came home late, she would sometimes fall asleep in the car. Dad would tell him not to wake her, then carry her inside and ge

Even though Sierra was incredibly drunk and barely aware, she tucked the blanket over Tommy despite almost not knowing who she was anymore. John's gaze softened.Tommy's eyes were wide open. "I'll come out after Mom is fully asleep.""Alright," John said.He tucked the blanket in around the two of them, looked at them for a moment longer, then turned off the light before leaving the room.Sitting on the living room couch, he looked at this cramped space. The size of the living room was barely larger than their bathroom at home. Every corner was crammed full of everyday objects. He couldn't understand why Sierra insisted on divorcing him and moving out here to suffer.Small. Narrow. No housekeeping. No help. While he was thinking about it, his phone buzzed in his pocket. He thought it would be Pamela, but the screen showed Kenneth's name instead. He picked up the call. "What is it?""I heard you had drinks with your wife tonight," Kenneth said, as nosy as ever.John didn't

There was no time for Nicholas to think about what had just happened. When he saw John walking farther away with Sierra in his arms, he immediately followed him. It was late at night, Sierra was drunk, and there was no guarantee John would not take advantage of her.John noticed but did not stop him, allowing Nicholas to step into the elevator as well.Nicholas stood openly at his side with a clear message in his posture. He was going to watch John and make sure nothing happened to Sierra.John could not even be bothered to spare him a glance.Soon, they reached the eighteenth floor. The bodyguards at the door nodded when they saw John. Mr. Rogers also greeted him. "Sir.""Where's Tommy?" John asked."Master Tommy is inside reading," Mr. Rogers reported. "He has already had dinner, but he keeps asking when Ms. Brooks will be back."John hummed in acknowledgment and stepped inside.Nicholas followed close behind."There's nothing more for you to do here.
