Chapter 3

Author: Half Sugar No Milk
Quinn Sullivan stepped on the gas immediately after I got into the car. The engine roared like an animal.

"Is there something wrong with your brain, Nicole Sabato?" She sped crazily while playing with a butterfly knife in one hand. The blade flashed dangerously in the sunlight. "Five hundred million? Are you really allowing that little crying bitch to take the position of Donna from you for so little money?"

As the car sped on the road, Quinn started cussing in multiple languages out of anger, "Do you know what they're saying about you out there? They're saying you got dumped and kicked out of the family. They say that you're just a dumb woman who paved the way for another woman. That cheating pair must be celebrating with champagne right now!"

I watched out the window as the scenery flew past me in the car. I leaned back in my seat and laughed softly. "Do you think I could've walked out that door alive if I didn't sign those papers, Quinn?"

Quinn stopped flipping the knife, cursing louder than before, "Then we'll fight it out with him! The Sabatos might have fallen, but I still have about a dozen men under me. At worst, we'll just die together!"

"It's because I'm getting tired of everything." I closed my eyes and said softly, "Besides, that five hundred million is clean money. It's considered a good sum."

Quinn stepped hard on the brakes and stopped next to a cliff by the sea. She turned to stare at me. Her eyes suddenly turned red.

"Look at yourself, Nicole." She adjusted the rearview mirror to reflect my face. "You're only 28, but you look like you're 38! Do you remember how beautiful you used to be? You were the famous 'Black Rose' on the dark web. So many rich heirs courted you, and plenty of renowned personalities wanted to hire you.

"Look at you now. Do you know how many scars you have? Do you have any idea how badly your internal organs are damaged?"

The woman reflected in the mirror looked pale, and her eyes were empty. She was an empty shell whose soul had been sucked out of her. There was no sign of her glory days of being the top assassin on the dark web left in her.

"You nearly died trying to help that illegitimate son get up the top. Now that he has succeeded, how dare he get rid of you because of his first love? I have half a mind to get back there right now and blow up that villa!" Quinn got increasingly agitated while speaking, and tears fell from her eyes.

I looked at her and felt a crack in the strong front I was putting up. Someone in this opportunistic world was crying for me. "Stop crying, Quinn." I took a deep breath as I tried to suppress the sadness I felt inside me. "It's probably a good thing that we got divorced. I've been living in his shadows the past five years, and it's time I live in my own shoes."

Quinn sniffled and wiped her face roughly. "Alright! Getting divorced is no big deal! We'll take that five hundred million and fly to Hartford to get ourselves dozens of male models. We'll make sure to infuriate that bastard!"

I could not help bursting out with a laugh.

"By the way…" Quinn seemed to remember something as she glanced at me through the rearview mirror. There was an evasive look in her eye. "An old friend might be waiting for you tonight."

This got me curious. "Who is it?"

"You'll find out when we're there." Quinn hinted as she started the engine. "It's a phantom you thought you would never see again."

The car turned into a secret location where the safe house was. Before the car stopped, I spotted a familiar figure. He was wearing a perfectly fitted black shirt while standing under a huge tree. His sleeves were rolled up to reveal his muscular arms.

He turned to look when he heard the car coming. The face that I once remembered to have a warm smile now looked sharp with eyes that were as deep as the sea of the Socario Islands. The man smiled, but there was something dangerous about it that chilled the spine.

"It's been a long time, Nicole."

My heart skipped a beat. It was Scott Cedaro, my childhood friend who had vanished for five years. He was also the heir of the Cedaros who had been rumoured to have died in an internal family war.

He was back.

Scott and I had our wedding a month later. It was a wedding that became sensational news to every mafia in the world. It was not because of how grand it was but because Don Cedaro, who was known as a legend who unified the businesses of the two countries of Litrak and Emerson, had given me half of his fortune as betrothal gifts just to marry me.Some people made fun of Scott and called him dumb for marrying a divorced woman who could no longer bear any children. Some were jealous enough to mention sarcastically what a schemer I was to have plotted marrying a wonderful man right after leaving a jerk. However, none of these bothered Scott. He knelt on one knee in front of all our guests during the wedding and gave me a document. "This is the transfer deed to every asset under my name."Scott looked at me sincerely. "From this day onward, I'm a penniless man, Donna. Are you willing to take me in and feed me?"This caused a commotion among the guests. My tears could not stop falling

Even though I had left the Fuscos, that did not mean that I would let Casey get away with what he did. With Scott's help, I started laying out my plans with leverage I still had in my hands. Casey was only able to get to his position because of my work behind the scenes for the past five years.Half of the underground contracts he managed to win had been negotiated by me. Half of the passwords of his secret overseas accounts were embedded in my mind. I would never dare to be in the mafia if I did not have some bargaining chips that were to my advantage.A week later, a huge scandal broke out among the Fuscos. It started with a few of Casey's core smuggling routes being busted with precision by the police. After that, evidence of Casey assassinating several competitors while fighting his way to the top was anonymously submitted to the committee. The family elders were enraged. Next, audio and visual recordings of Casey abandoning his loyal wife and being scammed by his mistress wit

The world was finally peaceful after that ridiculous farce, but the energy had been sucked out of me. My knees went weak, and I nearly fell.A pair of strong arms caught hold of me. "Everything is fine now." Scott's voice was heard coming from above my head. It felt warm and safe. "I'm here."I leaned into his arms and caught the soft scent of cedar coming from him. That had always been his scent. I had been putting up a strong front when I faced Casey, and I finally fell apart. My tears fell silently, and Scott's black shirt got wet from them."Am I a failure, Scott?" I choked while asking the question. "I gave him so much only to end up this way.""Silly thing." Scott stroked my hair gently. His touch was tender as if he were taking care of the most precious treasure in the world. "It's not your fault to have met a jerk like him. It's his loss. You're great. You're really great. He's the one who's not good enough for you."Scott helped me into the room and got me to sit on a cou

Casey violently snatched the ultrasound report from Rowena's hand, and he stared at the data printed on it. "Twelve weeks…" He muttered to himself as his face turned pale and then later bright red. It was a sign that he was about to become furious. If tracking him had crossed a line, cheating on a mafia Don like him and trying to trick him into bringing up another man's child was begging for death.Rowena became flustered. She had been so engrossed in using the baby as her bargaining chip that she had forgotten about the date on the ultrasound report. "No… It's not what you think, Casey. Listen to me!"She tried to grab Casey's hand in a fluster. "That ultrasound report… It's an old one. I took the wrong report. I really did grab the wrong one!""The wrong report?" Casey laughed in anger. His voice was quivering. "How dumb do you think I am, Rowena? Is it possible for you to grab the wrong ultrasound report when it's something you bring around with you everywhere? Did the senator

Casey was seething from the pain, and the look on his face got even worse when he saw Rowena appear. However, he instinctively became protective of Rowena as he held back his pain to ask, "What are you doing here? Didn't I tell you to stay in the hospital and have a good rest?"Rowena's crying got even worse as her tears fell continuously. "When… When I saw you running off angrily after getting that call, I was worried something might happen to you, so I followed you here. Don't be mad at Nicole, Casey. She only found another man because she was mad…"She had used the strategy of playing the victim expertly. Not only did she manage to clear herself of all responsibility, but she also managed to label me with the crime of adultery.Casey glared viciously at me after hearing what she said, as if to tell me, "Look, even Rowena knows what a philandering woman you are."However, something seemed to occur to him, and he suddenly pushed Rowena away. He glared at her viciously. "How did yo

Casey was in a daze from being punched. He sat on the ground while wiping the blood from his lips. He looked at Scott in disbelief. He had been standing at the top for two years and had never been beaten by anyone this way. "How dare you punch me?" Casey pushed himself up. His eyes were bloodshot. "This is my territory, Scott Cedaro! You won't live to see tomorrow's sun!"Scott scoffed at him. He did not even feel the need to reply to Casey. All he did was turn toward me to check my wrist tenderly. "Are you alright? Does it hurt?" When Scott saw my wrist swollen with red fingerprints on it, the look in his eyes darkened. The air around him became frighteningly tense.Casey was enraged at being ignored. He rushed up to us to attempt pulling us apart while roaring, "Don't touch her! She's my wife!""She's your ex-wife," Scott corrected him coldly while standing protectively in front of me. He was like an unmovable mountain. "Did you lose your memory in such a short time, Don Fusco
