Chapter 2

Author: Soleil
I froze, staring down at the thick document sitting on the glass coffee table.

Page after page outlined total financial separation before and after marriage—a complete clause dictating that if we divorced, I’d walk away with absolutely nothing.

Damian, the guy whose eyes used to overflow with pure tenderness whenever he looked at me, was sitting across from me with nothing but ice in his gaze.

My fingers clamped around the edge of the paper, crumpling it slightly as I took a deep, shaky breath. I wanted to fight for us, just one last time.

“My parents never signed a prenup when they got married,” I began, my voice tight, “If you could just—”

Damian pinched the bridge of his nose and let out a soft laugh.

“You mean your dad, the chef, and your mom, the factory worker? Anna, a family like yours obviously doesn't need to worry about protecting assets.”

My head snapped up, utter disbelief cutting through my shock.

“You ran a background check on me?”

My family had constructed an airtight cover identity for me years ago just to keep me safe. As far as the outside world was concerned, those fake background files were my reality.

Damian met my eyes, the mockery in his tone impossible to hide.

“Sophia ran it for me,” he said smoothly, “She warned me that you were just some gold digger who targeted me from the start, using marriage to claw your way up.”

He looked down, chuckling quietly to himself.

“I didn't believe her at first. You always seemed so innocent and pure.”

His gaze shifted, turning sharp. “Until yesterday, when you demanded a million dollars just for the wedding.”

He reached out, pulled a tissue, and gently wiped away a tear that had slipped down my cheek without me noticing.

“Don't be greedy, Anna,” Damian murmured, his voice deceptively soft, “You need to realize that having my last name alone is enough to change your entire life.”

I looked down at the ring resting heavily on my left hand—the ring he had slipped onto my finger just yesterday—and tried one last time to reach him.

“Damian, a high-profile wedding was the only thing my father asked for. I'll agree to everything else you want. Just trust me, after the ceremony, you'll understand everything.”

A harsh laugh burst from his chest, cold and completely devoid of warmth.

“I really spoiled you, didn't I? You actually think you're someone important.”

My eyes stung with hot tears as I shoved his hand away.

“Then we're done,” I said, my voice trembling, “Let’s break up.”

Before I could back away, Damian grabbed my wrist and pinned me hard against the wall. Disappointment burned deep in his eyes as if his worst suspicions had just been confirmed.

“Sophia was right about you. You really are a sickening gold digger! What, realized you can't milk me for cash, so you're dumping me to go hunt for your next mark?!

“I was going to give you one last chance, Anna,” he growled, “You just blew it. You're going to regret this for the rest of your life.”

I yanked my arm free, threw open the front door, and sprinted out into the night without looking back.

I called in sick to the orchestra for the next few days. Crying until my eyes were swollen shut, I packed up every single gift, card, and trinket Damian had ever given me into cardboard boxes, intending to courier them all back to his apartment.

I was just about to head out the door when my phone rang. I picked it up and saw a frantic call from one of the orchestra members.

“Anna, open social media right now!” she gasped the second I answered, “Is this post talking about you?!”

Sophia had posted a massive thread under the guise of an inside source.

The story detailed how her wealthy boss had been in a five-year relationship, only to discover his fiancée was a ruthless gold digger. She claimed the girl came from a dirt-poor background yet demanded a million-dollar wedding.

Even after the heartbroken boss offered to marry her anyway on the condition that she signed a standard prenuptial agreement, the girl immediately threw a tantrum and dumped him on the spot.

The post didn't drop my name directly, but the details about the musical career, the timeline, and the venue costs were so specific that anyone who knew us would recognize me instantly.

The press outlets that covered our engagement photoshoot picked up on the drama right away, flooding the comment section under Damian’s official corporate account, demanding to know if the rumors were true.

Thirty minutes later, Damian’s account left a single comment pinned at the top: [The wedding is currently on hold.]

“Damian, I’m still grateful that we met, and I'm grateful for those five years we shared,” I said, meeting his gaze with a calm, steady voice.“We really were in love once. But the paranoia and the hurt destroyed every bit of that love, and that part is real, too.”I shook my head softly. “I don't hate you, but I won't accept this necklace, either. I hope you achieve your original dreams, and I wish you all the best for your future.”Three years later.I drew my bow across the final note of my performance, bringing the piece to a close. Petals floated down from above as applause thundered through the auditorium, refusing to fade.Three years was long enough for me to transform from a promising young musician into a world-class solo maestro. Every single audience member who bought a ticket to my shows showered me with the highest praise imaginable. The name Anna was no longer defined by the James family legacy. When people spoke of me now, all they remembered was the brilliant cel

Edmund kept his word. Sophia vanished from New York completely.Damian’s situation, meanwhile, was somehow spiraling even further out of control.During rehearsals, I overheard orchestra members whispering that Damian’s company was on the brink of total liquidation. All my brother had to do was drop a single statement: The James family refused to do business with Damian's company. Instantly, every corporation in New York cut ties with him out of unspoken solidarity.Banks shut their doors, refusing to handle Damian’s loans. His top-tier design team handed in their resignations one after another. Seeing blood in the water, his corporate rivals moved in for the kill, tearing his remaining market share to pieces.“I heard Damian’s family is liquidating everything. They're selling off real estate, dumping stocks, even pawning their luxury cars,” someone whispered nearby.“That's what happens when you cross the James family,” another musician replied, “I heard he tried to see Anna sev

I finally had a good night's sleep for the first time in forever. When I opened my eyes, warm, golden sunlight was streaming across my bedroom windowsill. My phone hadn't made a sound all morning, either. For weeks, my phone had been blowing up non-stop with vile, abusive calls and texts from morning till night. The only way to get a second of peace was to yank the SIM card out completely.I powered up my phone, and a tidal wave of groveling apologies, desperate confessions, and missed calls from Damian flooded my screen. I scrolled through them one by one—texts from orchestra members, reporters who used to cover me, names I couldn't even keep track of.A knock echoed on my door.“Anna, come down for breakfast,” Edmund called out from the hallway.I called back, threw on a fresh outfit, and headed downstairs. The dining table was filled with all my favorite breakfast foods. I pulled out a chair, sat down, and took a slow sip of milk.“I had our PR team officially release your

The music snapped to a dead halt. The entire ballroom plummeted into a suffocating silence.Damian’s bored, arrogant expression vanished instantly. Edmund James, the heir to the hundred-billion-dollar James empire who had just closed a massive overseas acquisition, had actually just spoken to me.I watched Edmund glide down the grand marble staircase, then stride straight toward me.“I spotted a gorgeous raw gem while I was abroad,” he said smoothly, stopping right in front of me, “I knew you’d love it, so I tracked down a master jeweler to cut a custom necklace for you. That’s why I got back late.”Richard was now completely sobered up by sheer terror. His knees shook as he stumbled backward.“Mr. James! I’m so sorry for interrupting you!” he stammered, his face pale as paper, “I hope my drunk babbling didn't ruin your mood!”Edmund didn't even glance at him. Just like he used to when we were kids, he reached out and gently ruffled my hair.“You’ve been through a lot, Anna,” he

The news of my breakup with Damian spread like wildfire. The moment Damian officially announced he was pulling all financial sponsorship from the orchestra, every other corporate sponsor dropped us overnight. Our nationwide tour was cancelled indefinitely, the theater doors were padlocked, and even our private event gigs were systematically blocked.I tried contacting investors I used to be on first-name terms with, but no one would even pick up my calls.Nobody was stupid enough to cross Damian and his family’s fine-jewelry empire just to help me out. With me out of the picture, Sophia grew bolder by the day. At every single new collection launch, she threw passive-aggressive shade in my direction, publicly calling for me to reimburse every single penny Damian had spent on me during our five years together.“Name your price. How about fifty grand a month? Why play innocent? Everyone in New York knows what kind of gold digger you really are.“I’d jump on this deal while I still

From that day on, the way everyone looked at me changed.“That’s her, right? The gold digger who demanded a million bucks for a wedding.”“I heard that the orchestra director was her sugar daddy, too. No wonder she got the principal cellist spot—guess we all know how she actually earned it.”Everywhere I walked, the whispers swirled like smoke. The same girls who used to share makeup shade recommendations and swap secrets with me now dodged me in the hallways like I was carrying a contagious disease. Then, my concert shoes vanished from my locker without a trace.I took a deep breath and pulled open my locker door, only to freeze. Hanging inside was my performance gown, completely slashed to ribbons. Dark, thick ink had been dumped across the fine silk, ruining the color beyond recognition. The sleeves and hemline had been maliciously chopped into jagged, frayed rags. That was the dress my mother had made by hand for my coming-of-age ceremony, a beautiful blessing from her to me
