Chapter 4

Author: Naggy Veggie
There was a company get-together that night, with lots of drinking involved.

Since Leticia was a newbie, our colleagues continuously filled her glass with alcohol, making sure it was always filled.

The manager, Charles Clifford, then made another toast to her. "Leticia, you're incredible—landing the chairman's personal secretary role right after joining! Here, this toast is for you. Bottoms up!"

Leticia tried refusing it at first, but as the people around her started cheering her on, she kept downing drinks for the rest of the night and grew more and more tipsy.

Austin just continued looking at her quietly.

Charles then handed me a mug of beer. "Serena, you're the only one left who hasn't given her a toast yet. Come on. Give her a toast!"

I took the mug from him. But before I'd even said a single word, Leticia suddenly turned to me with tears in her eyes as she cried, "Serena, please, have mercy on me. I really can't drink another drop!"

Her words now made me seem like the bad guy, forcing her to drink half a dozen mugs of beer earlier.

I set down my mug at once. However, the rest of my colleagues just continued cheering us on. Suddenly, Leticia covered her mouth with both her hands and stumbled out of the restaurant.

Austin's face darkened immediately. He angrily slammed down his knife and fork and lost his temper with me. He yelled from across the table, "Serena Jacobson! Are you fucking done causing a riot?"

Everyone at the table jumped in surprise. Suddenly, I was made the center of everybody's attention.

"You can drink yourself to death for all I care if that's what you want to do! But what's the point of ganging up on her with the rest of them?"

Without even waiting for me to explain myself, Austin then sent his chair flying and stormed out.

My colleagues exchanged nervous glances with each other. Charles then came up to me and softly apologized, "I'm sorry, Serena. We were just trying to liven up the mood. We never thought that Mr. Lockhart would think of it that way."

"He can't possibly think that you told us to get her drunk on purpose, can he?"

"We're so sorry, Serena. We didn't mean to make you the scapegoat."

"It's fine," I said, my smile forced..

If Austin wanted to accuse me of a crime, then he would definitely find a way to do it. And since he thought of me as an evil, scheming woman, there was nothing I could do to change his mind. I would have to take the blame anyhow.

He had probably already forgotten everything else between us anyway.

My colleagues were still whispering and murmuring among themselves. "This is a low-alcohol beer, though. It's less than 5% alcohol. Is it possible for her to even get that drunk?"

"That's right! Say, you don't think that she's just pretending to be drunk, do you?"

"Who knows? Maybe she's just trying to get us to pity her. What a scheming person she is…"

I didn't hear the rest of what they said because my lawyer contacted me just then.

I stepped out to answer the phone. When I went back into the restaurant, I happened to catch sight of Leticia. She was being cornered against the wall by Austin, and her face was wrought with tears.

"What is it that you want from me?"

"Sign the agreement and accompany me. I'll give you an allowance of 150 thousand dollars a month!"

I had wanted to leave at first, but I suddenly heard Leticia exclaiming in determination, "No way!"

I stopped in my tracks. Suddenly, Leticia no longer seemed like the kind of woman I’d thought she was.

Austin chuckled lightly and asked, "Are you sure? You were the one who came to me first that night. You took the lead. And you have so much debt out there that you can't pay up. I bet that life's not so great when thugs and creditors are chasing you, hmm?"

Leticia looked furious. She raised her hand and slapped Austin hard on the cheek. "You bastard! Are you taking revenge on me now?"

"I am! You have a choice—be with me, or I'll send out a memo to everyone in the industry so that you'll never be able to find a job for the rest of your life!"

Austin's voice softened all of a sudden. "Lettie, I just want you to know that nobody else in the world can love you the way I do."

"I don't want to be your mistress."

He went silent for a short while. However, he then grinned and said, "Are you asking me to get a divorce? Over my dead body!"

I left as soon as I heard this.

Just like Mom said, I could never guess who the friend coming over for dinner was. It turned out to be our old neighbors from when my parents and I lived in Autelia when I was a kid.My parents had me while they started their business in Autelia. I lived there with them until I was a teenager. My neighbors, then, Jared Kensington and Daisy Harper, had taken great care of me.I recalled that they had two children of their own, an older daughter and a younger son. They also had a very cute mini poodle. We hugged each other passionately and in great delight since we hadn't seen each other in a very long time. We chatted as if time had never passed, talking about everything under the sky and walking down memory lane together.Daisy told me that they had remained in Autelia, and their daughter was now all grown up and married with a young boy."My son is still single, though," she added.I chuckled softly as I recalled her youngest son, who used to be very cute and quite plump. He oft

Luke came over to me and asked, "Who's that, Ms. Jacobson?"I replied, "I don't know him. Let's go."I was just about to leave when Austin quickly crawled over and hugged my leg, crying aloud, "Rena! Rena, my sweetheart, don't leave me!"While I was still struggling to get him off, Leticia suddenly ran out from one of the private dining rooms. When she saw that it was me, she immediately covered her face and screamed at the top of her lungs, "You again, Serena Jacobson! Why do you keep trying to seduce someone else's husband? You've got the nerve!"I wanted to defend myself, but Luke immediately shielded me behind him. "Hey! Watch your mouth!""I refuse! Serena is a fucking bitch! She dares to seduce my husband. She's a shameless slut!"Leticia was still busy yelling at me when Austin slapped her squarely on the cheek. She immediately nursed her face and screamed bloody murder. "You fucking bastard! You dare to hit me!""You're the slut! If you hadn't pretended to be all pitifu

Sam sent me some good news three days later.Austin had agreed to sign the papers. However, regarding the two million dollars Leticia owed me, she requested to pay me back in installments.I was fine with that, so I agreed at once.I just needed Austin to agree to the divorce. I was eager to shake both him and Leticia off my tail and start a new life without them.Sam then said, "They've both moved out of your house. How would you like me to deal with it?""Sell it."I had meticulously chosen that house as our home back when I wanted to marry Austin. However, times had changed, especially now.I let Sam handle everything related to the divorce and buried myself in work once more.A while later, my ex-colleague came looking for me."Serena! We've got exciting news for you!""Mr. Lockhart and Leticia are getting married!"I couldn't help smiling when I heard the "exciting" news. I replied, "That's good."They continued, "What's good about that? Leticia seemingly got hold of s

As the new company started getting busier, I began flying abroad for business more frequently than before.Dad hired a secretary for me. His name was Luke Kensington. He had recently graduated from college and was a very jovial person altogether. He was the one who accompanied me as we traveled the world for business.Since the company's venture was still new, there were a number of challenging conditions, as there were still many things to be implemented. However, Luke was particularly good at taking care of others. As we continued working together, we began to bond and formed a genuine friendship.Once, he asked me, "Ms. Jacobson, I heard that you're finalizing your divorce. What was the reason for it?""No particular reason. I just didn't like him anymore."Luke blinked. He then asked, "Then, what kind of person do you like?"I looked at his handsome face and chuckled. However, I didn't answer him.A few months later, I attended the local gathering at the Industry Summit Fo

Austin wouldn't stop blowing up my phone with calls after I left, so I blocked his number. As soon as my resignation was finalized, I immediately got onboarded at my family's company instead. Our company had just formed a new segment overseas, and there was plenty of work to be done. I was so busy that I barely had time to sit, let alone follow up on the divorce. I just left everything to Sam.Some of my ex-colleagues would occasionally send me text messages, updating me on their company's latest news."The company doesn't feel the same anymore now that you're gone, Serena. It's like we've had a complete overturn of leadership."That Leticia woman just wouldn't stop putting on airs and graces for everyone in the office as if she were the owner. Her behavior is so disgusting."Who does she think she is? Nothing she says holds water. She only knows how to complain about things and dish out nasty scoldings for no reason. She's such a disgrace. A lot of us are thinking of resigning."

I went back to my parents' house. They were livid when they found out that I was finally divorcing him."I'd told you many times that his character is just horrible! Whatever. It's good that you're leaving him now.""Pull yourself together, okay? Our company's international business is just picking up. I'll put you in charge when the time comes."I agreed. The next day, I went back to Austin's company to turn in my resignation and complete the handover process. However, as soon as I arrived, I bumped into Austin and Leticia. As expected, Leticia never left the country. Or, perhaps, Austin had gone after her and finally convinced her to stay.I didn't care and continued handing over my task list to my colleague.Austin marched over to me and spoke to me with his head held high. "Serena Jacobson, come over here and apologize to Lettie. I'll pretend nothing happened yesterday, then."How ridiculous."Apologize? For what? Because I gave her money to buy her own flight ticket? Or be
