Chapter 2

Auteur: Oatmeal
Charles paused for a moment, clearly choosing his words carefully. "It was our engagement party, and you walked out even though you were the star of the show.

"I texted you explaining that Susie and I left for official business. Even if you were upset about the party being interrupted, you shouldn't be taking it out on Susie.

"She’s already tolerated so much from you. If she hadn't stepped in to apologize to the guests on your behalf..."

Charles swallowed the rest of his sentence.

I stared at him in utter disbelief, feeling hollowed out by his words.

He knew damn well that even though I was supposed to be the main event, he had walked into the venue side-by-side with Susie. So how had it suddenly turned into Susie apologizing on my behalf?

I remained silent. A sudden gust of wind sent a tremor through my heart, and a wave of bitterness surged in my chest.

"Whatever. You can apologize to Susie yourself tomorrow," Charles said, standing up. He gave me a look as if I were nothing more than a kid throwing a tantrum.

"She thinks you're mad at her and felt so guilty that she cried her eyes out. Just think about what you've done." Charles let out a sigh.

I stood frozen in place, biting my lip so hard that I broke the skin. Any explanation I wanted to give died in my throat.

I had assumed Charles came over to offer an explanation about the engagement party, but it turned out he had only come for Susie's sake.

After he left, I went back to my room.

My fingers trembled as I unlocked my phone screen. Aside from the few texts Charles had sent this afternoon, there was nothing.

Suddenly, a dry laugh escaped my throat, and my eyes welled up with tears.

I was clearly the one who deserved an explanation, yet despite claiming they were worried, neither of them had sent a single check-in message. The only text I received was Charles reprimanding me for Susie's sake.

Seeing this, it felt as though I had a massive boulder pressing down on my chest.

Just then, my phone rang. It was a call from my mom.

I cleared my throat before answering.

Mom's voice was laced with anxiety. "Darling, what happened? I heard both of you suddenly left the engagement party?"

"Yeah," I replied, keeping my voice steady.

"The wedding is next month. Did you two get into a fight?"

I wiped away the tears on my face and hesitated for a moment.

"Mom, I don't want to get married anymore."

After I dropped that bombshell, my parents set everything aside and rushed all the way back from Norbridge.

The three of us sat together, wrapped in silence.

It was a long time before I finally spoke up. "I don't want to stay in Sandelford anymore. I want to be with you at Norbridge."

My father froze in surprise.

"Didn't you fight tooth and nail to stay here back then? Did Charles hurt you?"

I shook my head.

I grew up in Sandelford. However, in recent years, my parents had shifted their operations over to Norbridge, expanding the family into more legitimate businesses. Worried about leaving me behind, they had brought up the idea of moving together multiple times.

But Charles had told me, "You'll be my donna one day. I'm your family in Sandelford, and you'll be the most respected lady of my family. You will never be lonely."

So, I stayed behind without a second thought.

To stand side-by-side with him, I frequented casinos, handled high-society galas, and drank with arms dealers at his side.

I had to stay on high alert at all times, keeping a constant eye on the financial markets for him.

I coordinated with underground contacts to manage his money laundering schemes, and I even had blood on my hands.

Yet, none of this was ever what I wanted.

Even after everything I did, Charles was still never satisfied.

He would always say, "You could learn a thing or two from Susie. She's way sharper than you."

It seemed that in his eyes, I would never measure up to Susie.

Once the decision was made, I packed my bags, planning to leave the following week.

At noon, however, Susie showed up.

My words carried not a single trace of warmth. The tears Charles had been holding back finally broke free, streaming down his face. He kept his head low, his voice choked with emotion. "But I can't let you go..."If he had truly let go, he wouldn't have shown up here in the first place. But whatever he felt had nothing to do with me anymore."That's your own problem.""Selena, I'm sorry," Charles mumbled. When he finally lifted his head, he asked me with the utmost caution, "Can we still be friends in the future?""No." I turned away without looking back, walking straight toward Brandon.Brandon took my hand. He didn't ask a single question about our conversation, though he did shoot a sharp, possessive glare in Charles's direction.During dinner that evening, I took the initiative to tell him about Charles.Brandon listened with immense patience. When I finished, he gave me a gentle smile and stroked my hair. "I'm really glad you shared all of this with me."Though, hearing

Brandon noticed the shift in my expression and followed my gaze to look behind him.His brows furrowed slightly as he watched Charles slowly walking toward us."Do you know him?" Brandon asked.A slight ripple surged through my chest, but I suppressed it without showing a trace of emotion."I do," I let out a breath, standing up. "Let's go."I reached out and took Brandon's hand.Just as we turned to leave, Charles jogged over to catch up. "Wait."He cut us off, stepping right in front of us. His eyes fell upon my left hand, which was laced with Brandon's, a deep scowl forming between his brows."Selena, I finally found you. I went to Norbridge so many times, but I could never track you down."Over the past year, I had been staying at Brandon's house, often spending the nights there. Other times, I was traveling to different cities with his mom to attend jewelry exhibitions and auctions. My schedule was unpredictable, making it virtually impossible for Charles to find me even

When Susie caught sight of me, her eyes were bloodshot. She walked over and threw her arms around me, tears streaming down her face as she sobbed."I finally found you! I’ve been looking everywhere. Selena, why did you leave without saying a single word?""Why are you here?" Feeling uncomfortable, I reached out and pushed her away.Susie’s fingertips trembled slightly. She looked at me, her eyes filled with relief. "I’ve been searching everywhere for you. Even if you were mad at Charles, you shouldn't have stopped taking my calls. Aren't we best friends?"Once upon a time, I truly considered Susie my best friend. However, that wasn't the case anymore.I offered no response, my expression remaining completely flat. She grabbed my hand and pressed on, "Anyway, I really have to thank you for taking the fall for me that day. If it weren't for you, I probably wouldn't even be allowed to manage the arms trade."I snatched my hand back and couldn't help but let out a cold scoff."I di

I moved into our home in Norbridge with my parents, and Mom set aside her work just to spend time with me at home. She didn't pry, simply comforting me. "Now that you're back by our side, our minds are at ease. Whatever you want to do from now on, we will support you completely."I wanted to study design. It was something I had always been passionate about, but back then, that career path couldn't assist Charles in his endeavors. Charles’ voice rang out louder and clearer with every word.I froze in place, my expression grave.Susie quickly interjected, "What are you doing? Selena came all the way here out of good intentions to see me!"Charles acted as if he hadn't heard her, his sharp tone aimed squarely at me without holding back. "You're still as selfish as ever, never bothering to think about anyone else."I turned my head slightly away to hide my reddening eyes, fighting with everything I had to keep from crying.Noticing my state, Charles toned down his aggression, softening his voice. "Just apologize to Susie, and we'll call it even."He reached out to grab my hand, but I stepped to the side, dodging his grip. "Don't touch me. I'm not your fiancée anymore.""Enough, Selena!" Charles' expression turned icy cold. "You went around broadcasting our cancelled wedding; that should be enough to vent your frustration. I don't hold it against you, so stop throwing tantrums and refusing to let it go."Sus
