HE HAS FALLEN

AUTHOR’S POV

"You would put an injured warrior in a room that might collapse before giving him a proper bed?"

"I would put an injured warrior in the safest available space. If one of your people needs medical accommodation, Lydia will assess them and make the decision."

"And what about me?"

The question escaped before he had fully considered it.

Elena looked at him.

"What about you?"

"I need a private room."

For the first time since their conversation began, she looked genuinely surprised.

Then the surprise disappeared.

"No."

Kaiden's brows drew together.

"No?"

"You heard me."

"I am the leader of these survivors. I need a place where I can meet with my Beta and organize my people without disturbing everyone else."

"You can meet with Rowan in the common room during the designated hours. If you need privacy for a specific discussion, we can arrange a space when one is available."

"And where am I supposed to sleep?"

She pointed toward the building closest to the entrance.

"Your assigned quarters are there. You will share the room with Rowan and two other members of your group until we have enough space to make further arrangements."

Kaiden stared at her.

He had shared tents with his warriors during border campaigns. He had slept on the ground during long patrols and gone days without a proper bed when duty demanded it.

But this was different.

This was not a temporary inconvenience in the middle of a battle.

This was his former mate telling him that he would receive no special treatment in the place she controlled.

"You cannot be serious."

"I am."

"Elena, I am not an ordinary member of my pack."

"No. You're a guest in mine."

Her answer struck him like a slap.

He took a step closer, lowering his voice.

"Surely you understand that I have responsibilities that require space and privacy."

"And surely you understand that I have responsibilities too."

She gestured toward the buildings around them.

"Every room in Haven is being used. Some people are sleeping in shared spaces because we do not have enough beds. Children are sharing blankets with their siblings, and injured survivors are resting wherever we can make them comfortable."

Her gaze hardened.

"I will not move someone who has been living here for weeks simply because you are accustomed to having a room to yourself."

Kaiden felt his pride flare.

"You seem determined to remind me that I have fallen."

Elena's expression changed.

For the first time, something other than composure appeared in her eyes.

Pain.

It was there for only a second, but he saw it.

Then she looked away.

"No, Kaiden. You arrived here already knowing that."

The words silenced him.

She had not said them with cruelty. She had spoken as though she were stating a fact neither of them could change.

He had fallen.

His pack had been destroyed. His allies had abandoned him. Isabelle had left with her family, and his surviving warriors were now dependent on a settlement led by the woman he had rejected.

Elena had not caused any of those things.

She had simply refused to pretend they did not exist.

For a moment, Kaiden wanted to apologize.

Not for the conditions of his stay, but for the years that had led them here. For the way he had looked at her during the Moon Ceremony, as though she were a problem the Moon had created for him to solve.

For the night she left.

For every day afterward when he had convinced himself that she would eventually return.

The apology rose in his throat.

But before he could speak, Elena handed him the clipboard.

"This is the current list of available rooms and the number of people assigned to each building. Help Rowan organize your group. Your people will be expected to assist with repairs beginning tomorrow morning."

Kaiden looked down at the paper.

It contained names, room assignments, medical notes, and a list of supplies still needed to make the buildings habitable.

At the bottom, Elena had written a simple instruction.

No one is exempt from contributing when they are able.

He stared at the words.

Once, he would have considered such a rule unnecessary. In Blackthorn, every member had understood their responsibilities because the pack hierarchy had defined them.

Here, Elena had built a different kind of order.

One where rank did not automatically grant privilege.

One where even the strongest wolf could be expected to carry timber, repair a roof, or stand guard if that was what the settlement needed.

One where the leader herself was not above the work.

Kaiden had seen Elena carrying supplies earlier that afternoon. He had watched her examine the injured, organize the medical records, and speak with the guards. She had not stood apart from her people, issuing orders while others did the difficult work.

She had been working beside them.

And they had followed her because they trusted her.

He closed his fingers around the clipboard.

"Fine."

Elena looked at him.

"Fine?"

"We will accept your conditions."

She studied him for a moment, perhaps expecting another objection.

When none came, she nodded.

"Good. Rowan can help you settle everyone. If there are concerns about the room assignments, bring them to me after your people have been accommodated."

Kaiden gave a stiff nod.

Elena turned to leave.

"Elena."

She stopped but did not immediately face him.

He struggled to find the right words.

"Thank you for giving my people shelter."

She turned slowly.

Something unreadable crossed her face.

"Don't thank me yet. Haven has rules, and keeping everyone safe will require cooperation from all of you."

"I understand."

"I hope you do."

Then she walked away.

Kaiden watched her until she disappeared around the corner of the infirmary.

The bond stirred faintly in his chest, an ache that had become impossible to ignore since he entered Haven. His wolf wanted to follow her, to close the distance between them and demand that she acknowledge what remained.

But Kaiden stayed where he was.

He had once rejected her because he believed she was not strong enough to stand beside him.

Now she had given him a roof over his head, and he could not even demand a room of his own.

He looked at the clipboard again.

His name was written beneath Rowan's, followed by the number of the room they had been assigned.

No title. No privilege. Just another survivor.

For the first time, Kaiden understood that losing his territory had not been the only consequence of the world falling apart.

He had lost the authority he once took for granted.

He had lost the woman who had offered him her heart.

And now, under Elena's roof, he would have to learn how to live without either.

  • Rejected Before The Apocalypse, Now I'm The Queen   LEARNED TO LOVE HER

AUTHOR’S POVFor one brief moment, she considered turning in the opposite direction. Then she reminded herself that Haven was hers to manage, and she would not alter her movements simply because he happened to be nearby."Elena," he said. She stopped at a reasonable distance."What is it?""I wanted to tell you that the meeting went well."She glanced at him."That was the purpose of the meeting.""I know.""Then you don't need to tell me."His mouth tightened, but he did not argue.Instead, he looked toward the settlement."You've built something here."Elena followed his gaze.People were lighting lamps outside their shelters. Smoke rose from the cooking fires, and somewhere near the infirmary, children were arguing over a game. The settlement was still fragile. They had too little food, too few supplies, and no guarantee that the next day would be easier. But it was alive."We're building something," she corrected. "I didn't do it alone.""Still, they trust you.""Because I give th

AUTHOR’S POV "Your decision is that everyone receives equal portions unless their needs or assigned duties require an adjustment?""Yes.""And the warriors going on the expedition receive enough food for the journey, without being given a permanent advantage over everyone else?""Correct."Kaiden turned toward Roderick."Then we will follow the ruling."Roderick stiffened."With respect, Alpha, I believe—""You have made your objection clear," Kaiden interrupted. "The settlement has reached its decision. We will not waste more time arguing over it."A flicker of surprise crossed Elena's face before she could hide it.Kaiden had accepted her ruling without trying to override it.She did not know whether to be relieved or suspicious.Perhaps he had finally realized that he could not command people here.Or perhaps he had simply decided this particular argument was not worth having.Either way, the decision stood.Elena returned to her notes."We'll prepare the expedition supplies tomor

  • Rejected Before The Apocalypse, Now I'm The Queen   THE RULES OF MY HAVEN

AUTHOR’S POV Elena had learned that the fastest way to lose control of a settlement was to let people believe the rules could be changed whenever someone powerful disliked them.Haven had survived its first months through cooperation, sacrifice, and a great deal of stubbornness. Food remained scarce. The water supply had only recently been restored, several buildings still needed repairs, and every day brought another problem that demanded attention. But Haven was standing. And Elena intended to keep it that way."Everyone should be here by now," Garrick said, placing a stack of papers on the wooden table.Elena glanced around the meeting hall. The room had once served as a dining area for the people who had lived in the abandoned settlement. Its windows were cracked, one corner of the roof leaked whenever it rained, and the long table in the middle had been repaired with mismatched pieces of wood.It was hardly a place fit for a council meeting. But they had more important things t

  • Rejected Before The Apocalypse, Now I'm The Queen   I FINALLY UNDERSTOOD

AUTHOR’S POV "Then what is the point of the bond?" he asked, his voice quieter than before.Maera's expression softened slightly."Perhaps to give two people the opportunity to choose each other. A bond may bring them together, but it cannot make the choice for them. Love without choice is only another kind of captivity."Kaiden looked down at his hands."Is there anything I can do?" he asked.Maera regarded him for a long moment."If you want answers about the connection, observe it carefully. Do not deliberately provoke it. Do not use it as an excuse to force closeness. And if either of you experiences severe pain or distress, seek help rather than pretending you can endure it.""And Elena?""Let her decide what she wants to do."Kaiden exhaled slowly. It sounded so simple. It felt almost impossible.Maera returned to her herbs, making it clear that the conversation was over."One more thing, Alpha."He paused at the door."Do not mistake regret for love. Regret often comes when we

  • Rejected Before The Apocalypse, Now I'm The Queen   I WON’T FORCE HER

AUTHOR’S POV Maera reached for a jar and moved it aside before continuing."There are old accounts of damaged bonds reacting under extreme circumstances. Most are little more than stories passed down between generations. A few describe connections that appeared dead but responded when the mates faced danger, shared intense emotions, or came into physical contact after a long separation.""So it is possible.""It is possible that something happened between you and Elena. That does not mean the bond has returned.""What else could it be?""I don't know."The bluntness of her answer irritated him."You are supposed to understand these things.""I understand enough to know when I do not have an answer." Maera folded her hands on the table. "The old accounts are incomplete. Some describe a bond stirring for a moment before disappearing again. Others speak of pain so intense that the wolves involved could barely remain near each other. There are even accounts of emotions passing between tw

  • Rejected Before The Apocalypse, Now I'm The Queen   A BOND THAT SHOULD BE DEAD

AUTHOR’S POV Kaiden had faced rogues with blood on their claws, enemies who wanted his head, and nights when the screams of the dying filled the darkness around him.Yet none of those things had unsettled him as much as the moment Elena's skin touched his.He could still feel it.That strange pulse had passed through him like lightning, stealing his breath and leaving something unfamiliar lodged beneath his ribs. For a brief, impossible moment, he had felt what Elena felt. Her fear. Her grief.
