LOGINAUTHOR’S POV
She rushed out to find Garrick beside an old stone well behind the storehouse.
“There's water,” he said.
Elena peered into the darkness. A faint reflection shimmered at the bottom.
“Did anyone drink from it?”
“No.”
“Good. Find a clean container. We'll draw a sample and examine it before anyone uses the water.”
Garrick pointed toward the storehouse. “We found tools, too. A hammer, nails, rope, a few cracked lanterns.”
“Bring everything usable to the hall. We'll need them for repairs.”
For the next several hours, the survivors worked.
The hunters inspected the surrounding slopes. Two carpenters examined the cottages. Others cleared the communal hall, dragged broken furniture outside, and patched the worst gaps in the roof with salvaged boards.
Elena treated sprained ankles, cleaned cuts, and checked the elderly man who had complained of chest pain during the climb.
By midday, she had barely touched her own water.
Then Garrick returned from the storehouse carrying an empty sack.
“There's no food.”
Elena looked up.
“Nothing?”
“A few sacks of grain. Spoiled. Some seeds, but they've rotted, too. We found no preserved food or anything else worth eating.”
“And the surrounding area?”
“We haven't searched everywhere, but the nearest vegetable plots have been swallowed by weeds.”
Elena closed her eyes briefly.
“How much food did everyone bring?”
“Not enough.”
The words settled between them.
Twenty-seven people. Little food. Uncertain water. Three damaged cottages and one barely usable communal hall.
And an illness that could turn a dying man into a violent attacker.
They had escaped the burning settlement, but escape was not the same as survival.
“Gather everyone,” Elena said.
The survivors assembled outside the communal hall, their faces drawn with exhaustion.
Harlan, a broad-shouldered man who had argued against leaving their former settlement, pushed to the front.
“We can't stay here. We need to go to a proper pack territory.”
Several people immediately agreed.
“An Alpha's supposed to protect his people,” Harlan continued. “There's a strong pack beyond the northern ridge. They have warriors, food stores, proper shelters. We should go there.”
“Did you contact them?” Elena asked.
Harlan hesitated.
“No, but they have a duty to protect werewolves.”
“And if they refuse to open their gates?”
“They won't.”
“You sound certain.”
“Because they're an established pack!”
A tired laugh escaped someone in the crowd.
Another survivor stepped forward. “I heard two neighboring packs have already closed their borders. They're turning people away because they're afraid of the infection.”
Harlan shook his head. “Rumors.”
“Perhaps,” Elena said. “But until we know otherwise, we can't build our survival around the hope that another pack will take us in.”
“So we're supposed to starve here?”
“No. We're going to find food.”
“And if we don't?”
“Then we'll search farther.”
Harlan threw up his hands.
“This is madness! You're a healer, Elena, not an Alpha. What makes you think you can lead us?”
The question silenced the crowd.
For a moment, Elena heard another voice in its place.
You will never be fit to stand beside me.
Then she looked at the frightened people standing before her.
They weren't waiting for her to become someone's Luna.
They were waiting to find out whether they would have food to eat that evening.
Elena stepped toward Harlan.
“You're right. I'm not an Alpha.”
He lifted his chin as though he'd won.
“But I'm the one who brought you here alive. I'm the one organizing the repairs, treating your injuries, and making sure we have a plan. If you have a better one, tell us.”
Harlan opened his mouth.
“Do you know where we can find food? Do you know whether the northern road is safe? Have you found another settlement willing to shelter us?”
He said nothing.
“Then stop demanding answers you don't have.”
AUTHOR’S POVFor one brief moment, she considered turning in the opposite direction. Then she reminded herself that Haven was hers to manage, and she would not alter her movements simply because he happened to be nearby."Elena," he said. She stopped at a reasonable distance."What is it?""I wanted to tell you that the meeting went well."She glanced at him."That was the purpose of the meeting.""I know.""Then you don't need to tell me."His mouth tightened, but he did not argue.Instead, he looked toward the settlement."You've built something here."Elena followed his gaze.People were lighting lamps outside their shelters. Smoke rose from the cooking fires, and somewhere near the infirmary, children were arguing over a game. The settlement was still fragile. They had too little food, too few supplies, and no guarantee that the next day would be easier. But it was alive."We're building something," she corrected. "I didn't do it alone.""Still, they trust you.""Because I give th
AUTHOR’S POV "Your decision is that everyone receives equal portions unless their needs or assigned duties require an adjustment?""Yes.""And the warriors going on the expedition receive enough food for the journey, without being given a permanent advantage over everyone else?""Correct."Kaiden turned toward Roderick."Then we will follow the ruling."Roderick stiffened."With respect, Alpha, I believe—""You have made your objection clear," Kaiden interrupted. "The settlement has reached its decision. We will not waste more time arguing over it."A flicker of surprise crossed Elena's face before she could hide it.Kaiden had accepted her ruling without trying to override it.She did not know whether to be relieved or suspicious.Perhaps he had finally realized that he could not command people here.Or perhaps he had simply decided this particular argument was not worth having.Either way, the decision stood.Elena returned to her notes."We'll prepare the expedition supplies tomor
AUTHOR’S POV Elena had learned that the fastest way to lose control of a settlement was to let people believe the rules could be changed whenever someone powerful disliked them.Haven had survived its first months through cooperation, sacrifice, and a great deal of stubbornness. Food remained scarce. The water supply had only recently been restored, several buildings still needed repairs, and every day brought another problem that demanded attention. But Haven was standing. And Elena intended to keep it that way."Everyone should be here by now," Garrick said, placing a stack of papers on the wooden table.Elena glanced around the meeting hall. The room had once served as a dining area for the people who had lived in the abandoned settlement. Its windows were cracked, one corner of the roof leaked whenever it rained, and the long table in the middle had been repaired with mismatched pieces of wood.It was hardly a place fit for a council meeting. But they had more important things t
AUTHOR’S POV "Then what is the point of the bond?" he asked, his voice quieter than before.Maera's expression softened slightly."Perhaps to give two people the opportunity to choose each other. A bond may bring them together, but it cannot make the choice for them. Love without choice is only another kind of captivity."Kaiden looked down at his hands."Is there anything I can do?" he asked.Maera regarded him for a long moment."If you want answers about the connection, observe it carefully. Do not deliberately provoke it. Do not use it as an excuse to force closeness. And if either of you experiences severe pain or distress, seek help rather than pretending you can endure it.""And Elena?""Let her decide what she wants to do."Kaiden exhaled slowly. It sounded so simple. It felt almost impossible.Maera returned to her herbs, making it clear that the conversation was over."One more thing, Alpha."He paused at the door."Do not mistake regret for love. Regret often comes when we
AUTHOR’S POV Maera reached for a jar and moved it aside before continuing."There are old accounts of damaged bonds reacting under extreme circumstances. Most are little more than stories passed down between generations. A few describe connections that appeared dead but responded when the mates faced danger, shared intense emotions, or came into physical contact after a long separation.""So it is possible.""It is possible that something happened between you and Elena. That does not mean the bond has returned.""What else could it be?""I don't know."The bluntness of her answer irritated him."You are supposed to understand these things.""I understand enough to know when I do not have an answer." Maera folded her hands on the table. "The old accounts are incomplete. Some describe a bond stirring for a moment before disappearing again. Others speak of pain so intense that the wolves involved could barely remain near each other. There are even accounts of emotions passing between tw
AUTHOR’S POV Kaiden had faced rogues with blood on their claws, enemies who wanted his head, and nights when the screams of the dying filled the darkness around him.Yet none of those things had unsettled him as much as the moment Elena's skin touched his.He could still feel it.That strange pulse had passed through him like lightning, stealing his breath and leaving something unfamiliar lodged beneath his ribs. For a brief, impossible moment, he had felt what Elena felt. Her fear. Her grief. The pain she had buried so deeply that even her expression no longer betrayed it.And beneath those emotions, he had sensed the terrible loneliness she had carried after leaving Blackthorn. It had been like standing inside a wound he had inflicted with his own hands. But that was not the part that troubled him most.He had also felt his own emotions reflected through the strange connection. His fear when she nearly fell. His desperation to keep her from getting hurt. The longing he had spent t
