RUNNING FROM RESPONSIBILITY

AUTHOR’S POV

When Elena passed him, he glanced at Caleb and then at the bandage around the stranger's arm.

"You don't even know whether he's telling the truth," he said.

Elena stopped.

"No, I don't."

"He could be a raider himself."

"He could."

Roderick looked irritated by her calm response.

"Then why let him inside?"

"Because he's injured, and we can help him without surrendering our security. He'll be observed, his belongings will be checked, and he won't be allowed to wander around without permission until we know more about him."

"And if he betrays us?"

"Then we'll respond to what he actually does, not what we imagine he might do."

Roderick shook his head.

"You're too trusting."

Elena's expression hardened.

"No. I'm careful enough to recognize danger, but I refuse to become cruel simply because the world has become dangerous."

She turned away before he could answer.

Behind her, she heard him mutter something under his breath.

But he did not stop her.

That evening, Elena found Caleb sitting near the communal fire with a bowl of food in his hands.

He had been given a clean shirt, and his wounded arm rested carefully against his side. He looked less like a desperate traveler now, although exhaustion still shadowed his face.

Garrick sat across from him, asking questions about the road and the settlements to the south.

"How many people were in your group?" Garrick asked.

"Eleven when we left the lowlands. Only four of us reached the foothills."

"And the raiders?"

"I don't know how many there were. At least eight. They had weapons and knew how to fight."

"Did they show signs of infection?"

Caleb shook his head.

"No. They were healthy enough to beat us half to death."

Garrick's jaw tightened.

"Where are they now?"

"Probably still near the southern road. They were searching for food and weapons. I wouldn't recommend traveling that way."

Elena listened from the other side of the room.

The information was valuable. If raiders were operating nearby, Haven needed to strengthen its patrols and avoid exposing its supply groups.

She made a note in her ledger.

When Caleb finished eating, he approached her.

"I wanted to ask you something."

Elena looked up.

"Go ahead."

"How many people live here?"

"Twenty-seven before you arrived. Now, twenty-eight."

"And you take in everyone who comes through your gate?"

"No."

He seemed surprised.

"Then why me?"

Elena set down her pen.

"Because you were injured and needed medical attention. That doesn't mean you can stay here indefinitely without following our rules. Once you're well enough, we'll discuss what you can contribute and whether you want to remain."

Caleb considered that.

"Fair enough."

He hesitated before adding, "The people here trust you."

Elena glanced toward the communal hall.

Some of the survivors were mending clothes. Others were discussing tomorrow's assignments. Near the fire, Nora was helping one of the younger children eat while Finn sat beside her, his injured leg supported on a folded blanket.

The boy still rarely spoke to anyone besides Elena, but he no longer recoiled whenever someone approached him.

Progress, however small, was still progress.

"They're learning to trust one another," Elena said.

Caleb shook his head.

"No. They trust you first. The rest comes afterward."

She did not know what to say to that.

He gave a faint smile.

"I've seen people fight over a piece of bread. I've seen strong wolves steal from the injured because they believed they deserved more. But I've never seen someone treat a stranger's wound without asking what they could get in return."

Elena felt uncomfortable beneath his praise.

"I didn't do anything extraordinary."

"Perhaps not to you."

He glanced at the children.

"But people remember how they're treated when they have nothing left."

After he left, Elena remained seated beside the table, thinking about his words.

She had never intended to build a sanctuary.

She had simply wanted to survive.

Then she had found the children in the ruined school and realized that survival meant little if she had to abandon every principle that made life worth protecting.

Now people were beginning to look to her not merely as a healer, but as someone who could help them rebuild.

She was not sure she was ready for that responsibility.

But she was no longer running from it.

  • Rejected Before The Apocalypse, Now I'm The Queen   LEARNED TO LOVE HER

AUTHOR’S POVFor one brief moment, she considered turning in the opposite direction. Then she reminded herself that Haven was hers to manage, and she would not alter her movements simply because he happened to be nearby."Elena," he said. She stopped at a reasonable distance."What is it?""I wanted to tell you that the meeting went well."She glanced at him."That was the purpose of the meeting.""I know.""Then you don't need to tell me."His mouth tightened, but he did not argue.Instead, he looked toward the settlement."You've built something here."Elena followed his gaze.People were lighting lamps outside their shelters. Smoke rose from the cooking fires, and somewhere near the infirmary, children were arguing over a game. The settlement was still fragile. They had too little food, too few supplies, and no guarantee that the next day would be easier. But it was alive."We're building something," she corrected. "I didn't do it alone.""Still, they trust you.""Because I give th

  • Rejected Before The Apocalypse, Now I'm The Queen   EARN MY RESPECT

AUTHOR’S POV "Your decision is that everyone receives equal portions unless their needs or assigned duties require an adjustment?""Yes.""And the warriors going on the expedition receive enough food for the journey, without being given a permanent advantage over everyone else?""Correct."Kaiden turned toward Roderick."Then we will follow the ruling."Roderick stiffened."With respect, Alpha, I believe—""You have made your objection clear," Kaiden interrupted. "The settlement has reached its decision. We will not waste more time arguing over it."A flicker of surprise crossed Elena's face before she could hide it.Kaiden had accepted her ruling without trying to override it.She did not know whether to be relieved or suspicious.Perhaps he had finally realized that he could not command people here.Or perhaps he had simply decided this particular argument was not worth having.Either way, the decision stood.Elena returned to her notes."We'll prepare the expedition supplies tomor

  • Rejected Before The Apocalypse, Now I'm The Queen   THE RULES OF MY HAVEN

AUTHOR’S POV Elena had learned that the fastest way to lose control of a settlement was to let people believe the rules could be changed whenever someone powerful disliked them.Haven had survived its first months through cooperation, sacrifice, and a great deal of stubbornness. Food remained scarce. The water supply had only recently been restored, several buildings still needed repairs, and every day brought another problem that demanded attention. But Haven was standing. And Elena intended to keep it that way."Everyone should be here by now," Garrick said, placing a stack of papers on the wooden table.Elena glanced around the meeting hall. The room had once served as a dining area for the people who had lived in the abandoned settlement. Its windows were cracked, one corner of the roof leaked whenever it rained, and the long table in the middle had been repaired with mismatched pieces of wood.It was hardly a place fit for a council meeting. But they had more important things t

  • Rejected Before The Apocalypse, Now I'm The Queen   I FINALLY UNDERSTOOD

AUTHOR’S POV "Then what is the point of the bond?" he asked, his voice quieter than before.Maera's expression softened slightly."Perhaps to give two people the opportunity to choose each other. A bond may bring them together, but it cannot make the choice for them. Love without choice is only another kind of captivity."Kaiden looked down at his hands."Is there anything I can do?" he asked.Maera regarded him for a long moment."If you want answers about the connection, observe it carefully. Do not deliberately provoke it. Do not use it as an excuse to force closeness. And if either of you experiences severe pain or distress, seek help rather than pretending you can endure it.""And Elena?""Let her decide what she wants to do."Kaiden exhaled slowly. It sounded so simple. It felt almost impossible.Maera returned to her herbs, making it clear that the conversation was over."One more thing, Alpha."He paused at the door."Do not mistake regret for love. Regret often comes when we

  • Rejected Before The Apocalypse, Now I'm The Queen   I WON’T FORCE HER

AUTHOR’S POV Maera reached for a jar and moved it aside before continuing."There are old accounts of damaged bonds reacting under extreme circumstances. Most are little more than stories passed down between generations. A few describe connections that appeared dead but responded when the mates faced danger, shared intense emotions, or came into physical contact after a long separation.""So it is possible.""It is possible that something happened between you and Elena. That does not mean the bond has returned.""What else could it be?""I don't know."The bluntness of her answer irritated him."You are supposed to understand these things.""I understand enough to know when I do not have an answer." Maera folded her hands on the table. "The old accounts are incomplete. Some describe a bond stirring for a moment before disappearing again. Others speak of pain so intense that the wolves involved could barely remain near each other. There are even accounts of emotions passing between tw

  • Rejected Before The Apocalypse, Now I'm The Queen   A BOND THAT SHOULD BE DEAD

AUTHOR’S POV Kaiden had faced rogues with blood on their claws, enemies who wanted his head, and nights when the screams of the dying filled the darkness around him.Yet none of those things had unsettled him as much as the moment Elena's skin touched his.He could still feel it.That strange pulse had passed through him like lightning, stealing his breath and leaving something unfamiliar lodged beneath his ribs. For a brief, impossible moment, he had felt what Elena felt. Her fear. Her grief.
