STAY OUT OF MY LANE, DICK!

AUTHOR’S POV

stood near the northern building, speaking with Rowan. He had changed his torn shirt, but the exhaustion on his face remained. His shoulder was bandaged beneath the clean fabric, and he held himself with the rigid posture of someone determined not to show how much pain he was in.

Elena adjusted the strap of her toolkit.

"To inspect the water system."

"Why?"

She stared at him.

"Because the water has stopped flowing."

"And you intend to go alone?"

"I said I'm inspecting it, not climbing the mountain by myself."

"That doesn't answer my question."

Elena sighed.

"I am going with a small team. We need to identify the damage and repair it before our stored water runs out."

Kaiden glanced toward the mountains.

"Where is the damaged section?"

"Possibly near the lower ravine."

His expression changed.

"The path near the ravine is unstable."

She stiffened.

"You've seen it?"

"No. Rowan mentioned it when we arrived. He said part of the slope had collapsed."

"Then you understand why we need to inspect it."

"I understand why you need the water restored. I don't understand why the leader of this settlement is volunteering to walk into a dangerous area when she has people who can do the job."

Elena felt irritation rise.

"Because I know the system better than they do."

"Then tell them what to look for."

"And if they need help making a decision?"

"Then they can return and ask you."

She looked at him in disbelief.

"By the time they return, the damage could be worse. We don't have the luxury of sending people back and forth because you're uncomfortable with the idea of me doing my work."

Kaiden's jaw tightened.

"This isn't about my comfort."

"Then what is it about?"

He hesitated.

For a moment, his gaze dropped to the toolkit in her hand.

"I don't want you getting hurt."

The words caught her off guard.

She had expected him to argue about authority or insist that she should remain in the settlement while others handled the dangerous work.

She had not expected concern.

For one foolish second, the old bond stirred with something almost resembling warmth.

Elena crushed the feeling before it could settle.

"You don't get to decide what risks I take."

"I'm not trying to decide for you."

"Then stop questioning every decision I make."

Kaiden exhaled sharply.

"Elena, I am trying to help."

"Then help by making sure your people follow the rationing instructions until the water is restored."

She turned away.

He caught up with her before she reached the gate.

"At least take more guards."

"I have a team."

"Take more."

"No."

His eyes narrowed.

"Why do you have to make everything an argument?"

Elena stopped walking.

For several seconds, she simply stared at him.

Then she laughed once, without humor.

"Because you keep speaking to me as though you have the right to overrule me."

"I am not trying to overrule you."

"You told me where I should go, what work I should do, and how I should organize my people. You arrived here yesterday, Kaiden. You have not even learned how this settlement operates, yet you already seem convinced that you know better than I do."

His expression hardened.

"I have spent my entire life leading a pack."

"And I have spent the last several months keeping these people alive."

The words silenced him.

Elena stepped closer, her voice low but firm.

"You may have led a larger pack. You may have had more warriors, more resources, and a territory that people feared. But none of that makes you the authority here."

She held his gaze.

"If you want to help, then help. But I will not spend my time arguing with you every time I make a decision."

Before he could answer, Garrick approached with two hunters carrying repair equipment.

"We're ready," he announced.

Elena nodded.

"Good. Let's go."

She walked past Kaiden without another word.

She expected him to remain behind.

Instead, a moment later, she heard his footsteps following the group.

Elena turned.

"What are you doing?"

"Coming with you."

"No."

"I know enough about the terrain to recognize a dangerous slope, and my warriors have experience reinforcing damaged structures. I can be useful."

"You can be useful by helping Rowan organize your people."

"Rowan can manage them for an hour."

"And you can barely manage to go five minutes without questioning my decisions."

Garrick suddenly became very interested in adjusting the strap of his equipment.

Kaiden's eyes narrowed.

"Do you intend to argue with me until the water system repairs itself?"

"No. I intend to leave before you waste any more of my time."

She turned and continued toward the mountain path.

This time, Kaiden followed without another word.

Elena decided that if he wanted to make himself useful, she would let him. She did not have the time or energy to fight him every step of the way.

But she made a mental note to speak with Rowan later.

Kaiden needed to understand that Haven was not Blackthorn, and she was not a woman who would change her mind simply because an Alpha followed her into the mountains.

Even if that Alpha was the man the Moon had once chosen for her.

  • Rejected Before The Apocalypse, Now I'm The Queen   LEARNED TO LOVE HER

AUTHOR’S POVFor one brief moment, she considered turning in the opposite direction. Then she reminded herself that Haven was hers to manage, and she would not alter her movements simply because he happened to be nearby."Elena," he said. She stopped at a reasonable distance."What is it?""I wanted to tell you that the meeting went well."She glanced at him."That was the purpose of the meeting.""I know.""Then you don't need to tell me."His mouth tightened, but he did not argue.Instead, he looked toward the settlement."You've built something here."Elena followed his gaze.People were lighting lamps outside their shelters. Smoke rose from the cooking fires, and somewhere near the infirmary, children were arguing over a game. The settlement was still fragile. They had too little food, too few supplies, and no guarantee that the next day would be easier. But it was alive."We're building something," she corrected. "I didn't do it alone.""Still, they trust you.""Because I give th

  • Rejected Before The Apocalypse, Now I'm The Queen   EARN MY RESPECT

AUTHOR’S POV "Your decision is that everyone receives equal portions unless their needs or assigned duties require an adjustment?""Yes.""And the warriors going on the expedition receive enough food for the journey, without being given a permanent advantage over everyone else?""Correct."Kaiden turned toward Roderick."Then we will follow the ruling."Roderick stiffened."With respect, Alpha, I believe—""You have made your objection clear," Kaiden interrupted. "The settlement has reached its decision. We will not waste more time arguing over it."A flicker of surprise crossed Elena's face before she could hide it.Kaiden had accepted her ruling without trying to override it.She did not know whether to be relieved or suspicious.Perhaps he had finally realized that he could not command people here.Or perhaps he had simply decided this particular argument was not worth having.Either way, the decision stood.Elena returned to her notes."We'll prepare the expedition supplies tomor

  • Rejected Before The Apocalypse, Now I'm The Queen   THE RULES OF MY HAVEN

AUTHOR’S POV Elena had learned that the fastest way to lose control of a settlement was to let people believe the rules could be changed whenever someone powerful disliked them.Haven had survived its first months through cooperation, sacrifice, and a great deal of stubbornness. Food remained scarce. The water supply had only recently been restored, several buildings still needed repairs, and every day brought another problem that demanded attention. But Haven was standing. And Elena intended to keep it that way."Everyone should be here by now," Garrick said, placing a stack of papers on the wooden table.Elena glanced around the meeting hall. The room had once served as a dining area for the people who had lived in the abandoned settlement. Its windows were cracked, one corner of the roof leaked whenever it rained, and the long table in the middle had been repaired with mismatched pieces of wood.It was hardly a place fit for a council meeting. But they had more important things t

  • Rejected Before The Apocalypse, Now I'm The Queen   I FINALLY UNDERSTOOD

AUTHOR’S POV "Then what is the point of the bond?" he asked, his voice quieter than before.Maera's expression softened slightly."Perhaps to give two people the opportunity to choose each other. A bond may bring them together, but it cannot make the choice for them. Love without choice is only another kind of captivity."Kaiden looked down at his hands."Is there anything I can do?" he asked.Maera regarded him for a long moment."If you want answers about the connection, observe it carefully. Do not deliberately provoke it. Do not use it as an excuse to force closeness. And if either of you experiences severe pain or distress, seek help rather than pretending you can endure it.""And Elena?""Let her decide what she wants to do."Kaiden exhaled slowly. It sounded so simple. It felt almost impossible.Maera returned to her herbs, making it clear that the conversation was over."One more thing, Alpha."He paused at the door."Do not mistake regret for love. Regret often comes when we

  • Rejected Before The Apocalypse, Now I'm The Queen   I WON’T FORCE HER

AUTHOR’S POV Maera reached for a jar and moved it aside before continuing."There are old accounts of damaged bonds reacting under extreme circumstances. Most are little more than stories passed down between generations. A few describe connections that appeared dead but responded when the mates faced danger, shared intense emotions, or came into physical contact after a long separation.""So it is possible.""It is possible that something happened between you and Elena. That does not mean the bond has returned.""What else could it be?""I don't know."The bluntness of her answer irritated him."You are supposed to understand these things.""I understand enough to know when I do not have an answer." Maera folded her hands on the table. "The old accounts are incomplete. Some describe a bond stirring for a moment before disappearing again. Others speak of pain so intense that the wolves involved could barely remain near each other. There are even accounts of emotions passing between tw

  • Rejected Before The Apocalypse, Now I'm The Queen   A BOND THAT SHOULD BE DEAD

AUTHOR’S POV Kaiden had faced rogues with blood on their claws, enemies who wanted his head, and nights when the screams of the dying filled the darkness around him.Yet none of those things had unsettled him as much as the moment Elena's skin touched his.He could still feel it.That strange pulse had passed through him like lightning, stealing his breath and leaving something unfamiliar lodged beneath his ribs. For a brief, impossible moment, he had felt what Elena felt. Her fear. Her grief.
