Chapter 2

Autor: Crystal K
I stared at the appointment letter on my phone, a genuine smile—the first in years—spreading across my face.

How foolish I’d been in my past life.

I’d given up this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for Kaelan.

Back then, the supernatural races were just starting to integrate into human society. The political landscape was a mess of power struggles and infighting.

My mentor at the academy always told me I had a natural gift for strategy, that I was born to be a diplomat.

"Selene, your talents are wasted on the pack's old traditions," she’d once said.

But I chose the Silver Moon Pack anyway.

All for a man who was fated to never love me back.

I quickly typed a reply: "I will be there on time. Departing in three days."

The moment I hit send, a weight I didn't know I was carrying lifted.

There was another document on the table, stamped in gold foil.

The Elders' decree, naming me Lead Envoy to the Vampire Coven.

It was a great responsibility, and one I now had to formally resign from.

I picked up the document and headed for the council hall.

Just as I reached the door, I heard quiet sobs from down the corridor.

"Why does she always have to take everything from me?" Lila’s voice was choked with tears. "I worked so hard to pass the trials, to get a spot on the mission to the Vampire Coven... and now she's taking that too..."

I froze. My heart hammered against my ribs.

That voice.

That pathetic whimper.

The night we were mated in my past life, she had cried just like that under the moonlight, saying I had stolen everything from her.

"How does this even help the pack?" Lila continued to sob. "Is it just because she's jealous of me and Kaelan?"

I took a deep breath, forcing my wolf to calm down.

I couldn't make the same mistakes again.

I walked toward the corner of the hall.

"Selene."

Kaelan's voice was ice.

He stood at the entrance to the council hall, his Alpha aura crashing down on me like a tidal wave, threatening to crush me.

"The mating ceremony is in three days," he said, each word a bullet. "And you're still trying to push Lila out by fighting for a spot on the mission? Do you have any idea how that could shatter the peace between our races?"

"I'm not pushing anyone out," I said, trying to keep my voice steady.

"No?" He sneered, taking a step closer. "Sending a Beta of your power on a diplomatic mission? The vampires will see it as a threat, not an olive branch. That's common sense, Selene."

Lila peeked out from behind him, tears still on her cheeks.

"I worked so hard for this chance..." she stammered. "I don't want to be discriminated against just because I'm an omega. I want to serve the pack too..."

Seeing her pitiful, innocent act, I couldn't help but let out a cold laugh.

"Omegas on the diplomatic mission need a strong healing gift," I said, looking her straight in the eye. "Do you have one, Lila?"

Her crying stopped dead.

"A mission member needs to be able to heal critical injuries in an emergency. They need to soothe a raging vampire's temper with their healing power," I continued. "Even if I wasn't going, the Elders would never give the spot to an omega with no healing gift."

"You—" Lila's face changed.

I took the appointment letter from my bag and slowly unfolded it.

The golden pack seal glittered under the hall lights.

"Lead Envoy to the Vampire Coven, Selene," I read the title calmly.

Even though I was here to resign from it.

"Do you really think an omega has any chance of being the Head of Mission?"

Kaelan's expression froze.

But seeing him defend her like that still sent a twist of pain through my heart.

"I never thought you could be so cruel," he said, his voice dripping with disappointment. "The Selene I knew at the academy... she was kind."

He turned and gently stroked Lila's hair.

"Stop crying. If this is what you want, I'll talk to the Elders. I'll get you another diplomatic opportunity."

His voice was softer than I'd ever heard it.

My eyes burned. I stared at him, watching him comfort her.

I'm giving you your precious love to be your Luna. It's the best gift I could ever give you.

Their figures disappeared down the hall. I gripped the appointment letter in my hand.

Two hours later, I walked out of the Elder's council chamber.

"Your resignation has been accepted," the oldest Elder sighed. "Selene, are you sure you want to give this up? You're the finest strategist I've ever seen."

"I'm sure."

All my pack duties were officially handed over.

The position of Lead Envoy was gone.

Now, I was truly free.

I dragged my exhausted body to the villa—the home meant for me and Kaelan.

I still had some things there.

Once I packed, I would be gone for good.

But when I pushed the door open, I found myself face-to-face with Kaelan.

Selene's POVThe world started to spin. All those painful years in my past life, the mysterious illnesses, my fading healing factor. And the ever-deepening misunderstanding and hatred between me and Kaelan. It was all a conspiracy."So the month Kaelan was gone..." I managed to say."He was investigating this," the captain confirmed. "Our records show he contacted multiple intelligence networks and even infiltrated a vampire nest."Damian sneered. "That foolish Alpha thought he was so clever. But he never knew our plan went much deeper than he imagined.""What plan?" Ethan demanded."To divide all the powerful wolf alliances," Damian said, his eyes glinting with malice. "To rot you from the inside out. And your fated mate bonds are your greatest weakness."I clenched my fists, fighting the urge to punch him."Where is Lila now?""With the Blackwood Pack, of course. Silver Moon's most powerful ally," Damian said with a smug smile. "With you out of the way, her mission will be much easie

Selene's POVKaelan pushed me toward the speedboat's controls."The navigation is set," he said in a low voice, pressing the key into my hand. "Follow the route. Someone will be there to meet you.""What are you going to do?"He turned to look at me, a tenderness in his eyes I had never seen before."Protecting you. It's what I should have been doing all along."He hit the ignition, and the boat's engine roared to life. Then he turned to face the dozens of vampires on the dock."No!" I reached for him, but the boat was already moving forward. "Kaelan!"He stood at the edge of the dock, a lone figure facing an overwhelming enemy. The blond vampire leading them applauded elegantly."Such a touching sacrifice," he said, his voice dripping with mockery. "But do you really think you can stop all of us by yourself?""Then come and try," Kaelan said, his voice terrifyingly calm. His immense Alpha power exploded, and the nearby water began to tremble."Kaelan! Come back!" I screamed from the b

Selene's POVKaelan froze.I turned and walked to Ethan's car without a backward glance."Selene!" he roared behind me, his voice hoarse. "You can't do this to me!"I got into the passenger seat and shut the door.Through the window, I saw him standing there, like a shattered stone statue.Ethan started the engine, and the car pulled away."Are you sure this is the right thing to do?" he asked softly.I didn't answer.Because I wasn't sure either. That night, a blizzard hit.Thick flakes of snow fell from the sky, quickly blanketing the city in white.I stood at my window, watching the snow-covered street below. And then I saw him.A massive wolf—his wolf—lay in the snow below.Snowflakes landed on his fur and quickly melted. But he didn't move, his amber eyes fixed on my window.Just like all those times in our past life.Whenever we fought, whenever I was sick or hurt, he would always shift into his wolf form and watch over me.Even when we despised each other, even when he said the

Selene's POVThe next morning, I pulled open my curtains to greet the dawn. And saw a familiar figure standing on the street below.Kaelan was leaning against a black car, his head tilted back, looking up at my window. We stared at each other from three stories apart. He didn't look away. Neither did I.After a full minute of stalemate, I was the one to draw the curtains shut."Dammit."I quickly got ready and left the apartment building through the back exit. But when I arrived at the Council building, he was already waiting by the main entrance."Good morning, Selene," he said. His voice was raw, like he hadn't slept at all."What are you doing?""Waiting for you," he said, as if it were the most natural thing in the world. "I told you, I'm taking you home.""This is my home now." I walked around him and headed for the entrance. He fell into step behind me. "The Silver Moon Pack is your home.""I'm not a member of the Silver Moon Pack anymore."The elevator doors opened, and I hurrie

  • Rejected Before the Mark   Chapter 6

Selene's POVI stood on the rooftop terrace of the Supernatural Council headquarters, looking down at the glittering lights of the metropolis.Six months. It had been six months since I left the Silver Moon Pack."Thinking of home again?" a gentle voice asked from behind me.I turned to see Ethan, holding two glasses of champagne. The leader of an ancient griffin clan and the youngest core member of the Council, he had become my most trusted friend over the past six months."Not home," I said, taking a glass and sipping it. "Just enjoying the feeling of freedom."A complex emotion flickered in Ethan’s golden eyes.He never asked about my past, but he could sense the deep wound in my soul."Nervous about the Black Sea Witch Coven summit tomorrow?" he asked, changing the subject."Not at all." I smiled faintly. "Six months ago, a summit like this would have terrified me. Now? It’s just another Tuesday."It was true. After leaving the pack, I had thrown myself into my work at the Council.

  • Rejected Before the Mark   Chapter 5

Kaelan’s POVLila stood in the moonlight, wearing the white gown that had been custom-made for Selene. It was too big for her, but she held her back straight, trying to fill out the elegant dress."Kaelan..." She looked down shyly, her voice soft. "Do... do you like my dress?"My heart felt empty. This was wrong. All of it was wrong. The person who should have been here was Selene. The proud, powerful Selene who never bowed her head to anyone."Lila, why is it you?" My voice trembled slightly. "Where's Selene?"A flicker of disappointment crossed Lila's eyes, quickly replaced by a wounded look."She... she said she didn't want to come," she said, biting her lip. "Marcus brought me her gown. He said you two had talked it over, and that I was to take her place..."Footsteps sounded behind me.Marcus strode onto the platform, holding an exquisite jewelry box."Alpha." His voice held an emotion I couldn't decipher. "Selene asked me to give this to you."He opened the box. Inside lay a bril
