The palace kitchens remained at twilight, the dishes clinking and the chatter of the chefs faded to quiet several hours ago. But in the solarium—a glass room filled with moonlight that bathed rose gardens—candlelight sparkled warmly on a table for two. The scent of roasting lamb and sage was hardly present in the air, and crystal glasses waited beside white porcelain plates.

Mark stood beside the table, open collar, restless hands re-adjusting the gear for the third time. He didn't make plans. He wasn't accustomed to this sort of thing. His movements were too practiced, too deliberate—like a pugilist faking something more spontaneous.

Cassie appeared, her simple pale silver dress illuminating candlelight like the first glimmer of morning. She tracked Mark's movements.

"You didn't have to do that," she said, the sentence hesitant.

"I wanted to," Mark replied quietly. "No patrols. No politics. Just. us."

She smiled at him, faintly, though shadows ran at her eyes.

They sat, said small t

  • Rejected But Elevated    Chapter 20

The palace was filled with an unearthly calm, the kind that boded only an unraveling. It was the night of the Blood Moon, and all had the smell of ritual. Scarlet silk pennants flowed from the topmost arches, embroidered with silver runes to keep at bay ill omens. Lanterns glowed moonstone nestled by fire, producing long shadows that danced across marble. The aroma of smoldering sage and night roses drifted in the halls like ghost-smell—earthy, narcotic, and near to asphyxiating.Cassie stood in her room, still amidst all the preparations. Her dress spread out over the chaise for her, a masterpiece—a starlight-threaded ivory slip so sheer it appeared as nothing at all, yet silk and smoke. The ceremonial veil, embroidered with the crest of the ruling family, glimmered with dew-like drops to catch the first faint touch of moonlight. She couldn't bring herself to touch it.Not when her heart thudded like war drums within her breast. Not when every road ahead seemed like a lie wearing vel

The palace's eastern wing dated from an earlier time than the others, built from darker stone and overgrown with ivy that brushed against the windows. This was where the ancient archives lay—a hollowed shrine of scrolls, relics, and tomes bound in dragonhide and strewn with wards of protection. Few entered untempted. Fewer still departed untempted.Cassie had come alone. The air was chilled, with dust and ancient magic in it. Lanterns were suspended above the floor, casting golden halos to drift across lengthened, gnarled shelves. Her fingers wandered over wooden spines, stopping sometimes as if something would summon her. She didn't know what she searched for—only that the dreams were growing stronger now, and the storm-child inside her awakened more with each passing day.A humming sound led her deeper. She turned and came to a halt.In the middle of the vault of the archive stood a man she had never before seen.He was no servant. He bore no palace sigil. He was too at ease, too me

  • Rejected But Elevated    Chapter 17

Cassie’s POVWhen I arrived back at the palace, the dawn broke like a battered white color on the horizon. The servants were stirring, fire and wet earth scent filled the halls. I walked through the east wing, jaw set high, feet slow—towards a serenity I lacked. But all around me the air pulsed. As if the magic I'd drawn in had trailed after me, catching itself up in silken threads at my ankles. Something in me was altered. Not only physically, but way down in my soul. And I wasn't the only one who recognized it."Cassie."I froze at the sound of Mark’s voice. He leaned against the archway that led to the inner gardens, dressed in a dark tunic, his hair still damp from morning training. His golden eyes flicked over me.“You smell. different.”My heart beat once, hard. “Do I?”He stepped closer, gaze narrowing. “Not bad. Just—new. Like rain in the desert. Like something awakened.”I swallowed. “Maybe I’m just tired.”He reached out, brushed a stray lock of hair from my cheek, and let h

  • Rejected But Elevated    Chapter 16

Cassie's POVThe air in the morning was cold and wet, the sort of quiet that breathed secrets into the wind. Mist still lingered about the bushes like a muted mantle as I trekked between the trees, leaves whispering against my dark cloak as if attempting to stop me, to query, Where are you, Luna? Why hide from me?I had gotten out of the palace before the first light of morning, when the guards were switching watch and the wolves were still wrapped in slumber. I'd spent the entire night awake, my heart racing against my chest. It wouldn't occur. It hadn't occurred in weeks. My soul was unrested, like it knew something that I was only beginning to understand. So I dressed in silence, concealing my silver-blonde hair beneath a black hood, wrapping my scent in herbs that I had stolen from the healer's wing. I was familiar with the palace as the back of my hand, with its secret passages and lesser-known exits. I had learned how to disappear. And so I disappeared. No one saw Luna slip into

  • Rejected But Elevated    Chapter 15

The dungeon under Greyer's Palace is a dimly lit, grimy, and foreboding area hewn deep into stone. The air stinks of mildew odor, rot, blood, and filth. Flickering torches make eerie shadows along the dark, grimy corridor lined with rusty metal bars and grimy straw. Chains jingle in the distance, and noises are only dripping water or distant wails. It's a world that is stuck in time, weighed down with memories of suffering and secrets—larger than a prison, it's a witness to suffering and deception.Daisy winced, her arms shaking under the burden of bruises. The guards hadn't been kind to her. There were no orders to beat her up, of course, but wolf guards did have a certain loyalty—particularly where Cassie was concerned. A push there, a sore grip here, a slammed cell door that scraped her shoulder hard enough to bruise. Daisy felt all the injuries, body and mind, seep under her skin like searing needles. She stretched out on the icy stone floor, her breath shallow and lips parched, m

The hush that had enveloped the royal medical chamber quaked as though glass as the door smashed open in a deafening thud. Daisy stood frozen to the ground with the knife in her hands. The impact shock-jolted the candle fire and sent the very air flying about. The twin Alpha brothers Mark and Lark burst into the room with unbridled fury etched upon their faces.Lark's eyes flashed to the woman kneeling beside Luna—Daisy's bed. Her arm extended, knife shining in her palm like the fangs of a snake ready to bite. Without a moment's thought, Lark leapt and grasped her wrist, twisting it so sharply that the knife bit into the stone floor, sliding harmlessly out of reach. Before Daisy could utter a single word, there was a loud slap and Mark's hand snapped into her face. The force was enough to knock her to the ground with her hand locked in a tight circle around her cheek in shock."How dare you," Mark snarled, his voice an animal growl of betrayal.Daisy's eyes pricked with tears, but te

“You don’t close your eyes, Cassie! Stay with me! We’re going to get you home,” he pleaded, the desperation formed a lump in his throat. At the palace, Daisy watched in horror as the search party trampled through the trees, carrying a figure in Mark’s arms that made her heart stop. Cassie was pale, translucent skin marked with blood across her cheeks. As anxiety blitzed her mind, it collided with a rush of excitement from what was about to happen. “No…” she said, a mix of disbelief and dread washed over her. Mia, standing next to her, gasped. “They found her!”Daisy’s mind was racing. She hoped this day would arrive, but not like this. “What if she is dead,” she said, her eyes icy and scary.Mia was taken back for a moment, she stared at her friend, speechlessly."She is alive!" Mia snapped, her eyes full of fury. "You should be ashamed of yourself for even thinking that!" But with her heartbeat thundering wildly in her ears, Daisy's brain had started to whirl chaotically. What wo

  • Rejected But Elevated    Chapter 12

Cassie kept running through the trees, her breath ragged, her heart pounding like a warfare drum in her chest. Each soar over twisted roots and fallen branches despatched jolts of pain shooting through her aspect, in which the sharp fringe of a bramble had torn through her pores and skin. She didn’t know where she was going, however she knew she needed to get away from her merciless destiny. The moon hung excessively, casting eerie shadows that danced like specters on a number of the trees. She could feel the load of her blood-soaked blouse clinging to her torso, the sticky warmth each a reminder of her accidents and a desperate plea to live to tell the tale. The night time air changed into thick with the fragrance of damp earth and pine, but she can also hit upon the steel tang of her very own blood. Every time she stumbled, her fingers scraped towards the hard bark of bushes, leaving at the back of strains of her warfare. As she pressed on, her legs began to falter. Darkness crep
