BRIELLE'S POV

I didn't stop walking until I hit the stairwell door, shoving it open with more force than necessary.

The metal banged against the wall. I flinched at the sound, then let the door swing shut behind me, sealing off the hallway noise, sealing off everything.

My hand still burned.

I stared at my own palm like it might show a mark, some visible proof of what had just happened. Nothing. Just skin, slightly flushed, nothing that explained the current still humming underneath it.

TRISTAN'S POV"Where is she?" I was through the front door before the guard finished waving me past. "Where are the girls?""Upstairs, sir." Reyes stepped aside to let me by. "Everyone's safe."I took the stairs anyway, two at a time, Brielle's voice from the phone still ringing in my head. Someone was at the window, Tris. Dad's here. Just come.I'd left Elena's apartment without my jacket. She'd barely slept since yesterday, since her brother smiled at her in that elevator, and I'd been sitting up with her when my phone lit up. She'd pushed me toward the door herself. The girls' door stood open at the end of the hall.Brielle was in the doorway, arms wrapped around herself, phone still clutched in one hand. She didn't turn when I reached her. She only tipped her head toward the room.My father was waking up in an armchair. He blinked slowly, the way old men do when they've slept somewhere they shouldn't have. His neck cracked when he lifted his head. Nora was curled against his chest

BRIELLE'S POVI was on the stairs by the time the monitor went quiet.Hunter's footsteps pounded behind me, heavier than mine, closing the distance by the landing. Neither of us spoke. The hallway light was off, and I didn't stop to find the switch. The girls' door stood half open.Nora was sitting bolt upright in bed, blanket clutched to her chin, one small finger pointed at the window. Maya and Lila hadn't stirred."There." Her whisper shook. "Mama, there was a face."I crossed the room in three strides and pulled her against me. Her heart hammered against my ribs, fast as a bird's."Okay, baby. I've got you."Hunter moved past us without a word. He planted himself between the beds and the window, shoulders filling the frame, and eased the curtain aside with two fingers."Nothing now," he muttered, low enough that it wouldn't carry. "Doesn't mean there wasn't."I grabbed the radio from the nightstand. My father's security team had left one in every room that afternoon, and I pressed

BRIELLE'S POV"Again, Mama." Nora tugged my sleeve, wolf tucked under one arm, her voice already heavy with sleep she was fighting off. "The one with the dragon.""We already read that one twice." I smoothed the blanket over her legs anyway, glancing at the baby monitor Alexander's security team had installed above the window an hour ago, the small red light blinking steady in the corner of the room."Three times is better." Maya said it with the flat confidence of a child who had never lost an argument in her life.Lila had already fallen asleep against my arm, her breathing slow and even, one hand still fisted in the hem of my shirt.I read the dragon book a third time anyway, quiet enough not to wake her, and by the end even Nora's eyes had gone heavy, her small hand curling loosely around the edge of the blanket.I eased out from under Lila carefully, tucked the blanket higher around her shoulders, and stood in the doorway a moment longer than I needed to, watching all three of th

DARIUS'S POV"Darius." Tristan's voice, close now, sharp with alarm. "What is it? You've gone white."I couldn't answer him yet. The second message finished loading on the screen, my thumb hovering over it, and I read it twice before any of it made sense. My father called me back. I couldn't say goodbye properly. The room on fifty-two, there's a panel by the east wall my family has always had access to. It's how we speak to home. I wasn't taking anything from you. I'm sorry for everything, truly. Please don't come looking for me. It won't matter if you do.I lowered the phone slowly, my pulse still hammering, and felt every eye in the room land on me at once."Darius." Alexander's voice had sharpened. "What did she say?"I read it out loud instead of trying to explain it, my voice flatter than I meant it to sound. By the time I finished, Alexander's shoulders had dropped half an inch, and Tristan had stopped gripping the edge of the laptop hard enough to whiten his knuckles."Her fath

DARIUS'S POVNobody moved. Tristan's laptop sat turned toward us, the log still open, her credentials highlighted in a soft, damning blue against the timestamp. Outside the glass, the design floor had gone back to its usual noise, phones ringing, someone laughing two desks over, utterly unaware of what was unfolding twenty feet away."That's not possible." Hunter said it first, too fast, the words tripping over each other. "She wouldn't—""Wouldn't what?" Alexander's voice cut through the room, flat and hard. "Wouldn't lie to your faces for weeks. Wouldn't use access she had no business having. Finish the sentence, Hunter."Hunter didn't finish it.I kept my eyes on the screen. My jaw had locked so tight it ached, and I didn't trust my face to hold still if I looked at him instead. That wasn't mine to hand over. Not here."What's even on fifty-two?" I asked instead, forcing my voice level. "What would she have wanted badly enough to risk this?"Tristan's fingers hovered over the keybo

ELENA'S POV"Move." The word came out of me before I'd decided to say it, low and shaking, my fingers still locked around Tristan's sleeve.Zane didn't move. He stood in the open doorway of the elevator like he had all the time in the world, hands loosely folded around the leather folder still tucked under one arm, watching me the way he used to watch me lose arguments as a child — patient, amused and already certain of how it would end."That's not much of a greeting." His mouth curved, faint and unhurried."What are you doing here?" My voice cracked wider the second time, and I hated it, hated that four years of distance hadn't taught my body to stop reacting to him like this."Working." He tapped the folder once. "The council mandated a business review. I came to conduct it.""You don't do reviews. You don't do anything that puts your name on paper." I finally let go of Tristan's sleeve and stepped forward, putting myself directly in the doorway so he couldn't slide past without go
