Chapter Seventy-Five: The Truth in the Shadows

Cara’s POV

The packhouse felt suffocating. The whispers, the glances, the tension—it was all too much. I needed air, needed to clear my mind.

My hand instinctively rested on my stomach. It wasn’t noticeable yet, but I felt it. A life growing inside me, hidden from the world.

I slipped out into the cool night, the fresh air filling my lungs. The scent of damp earth and pine trees surrounded me as I walked through the quiet pathways. The moon cast a soft glow, and the distant hoot of an owl was the only sound breaking the silence.

I wasn’t sure where I was going. I just needed space.

As I walked, my thoughts raced. Liam. Damon. My unborn child. The past. The future. Everything felt tangled, pulling me in different directions.

I stopped near a clearing, closing my eyes for a moment. I had come here before, back when things were simpler. Before I learned the truth about my mate bond. Before the lies. Before the pain.

Chapter Seventy Six : The Truth HurtsCara's POVThe instant I stepped back inside the packhouse, my chest felt constricted, like whatever was in me was crushing it from the inside out. My legs kept propelling me, but my head was still running back from what had transpired with that strange man.Liam lied to me.The truth dropped into my stomach like a weight of lead. He didn't rescue me that night. He didn't present me with the necklace. He stole it. He lied about something he never did.And because of that lie. I made the worst decision of my life.I left Damon.I clenched my fists into tight balls as I stormed the halls. Each step made the pain in my chest worse. I shouldn't have come back to this pack. I shouldn't have trusted Liam. Now, that was too late.Damon had already picked Sophia.A burning pain pierced my heart. I fought to shoo it away, but it stuck to me like a shadow. He was already moving on… with Liam's sister. And I was stuck with Liam's baby, ensnared in a situatio

Chapter Seventy Seven Chapter Seventy-Four: Shattered HeartCara's POVI walked along the dirt path, my fists balled at my sides. The cool night air did nothing to seep into the burning ache in my chest. My mind could not stop reeling from everything that I had learned.Liam had lied to me.The boy who had rescued me all those years back wasn't him. He had lied to me, stolen the necklace, and pretended to be my savior. And I had trusted him.Because of that lie, I stayed with him. I ignored the love I had for Damon. I forced myself to love a man who never deserved it.And now…Damon had moved on with Sophia. My legs were trembling, yet I still walked. I didn't know where I was going exactly—I just needed answers. I needed to see Damon.Would he even talk to me?I reached the packhouse, my heart pounding in my chest. The guards at the door barely looked at me as I passed through. I had been here so many times before, but this time it was different. It felt like I was stepping into som

Chapter Seventy Eight : The Confrontation Damon’s POVThe air inside the cabin was thick with the lingering scent of sweat and intimacy. I ran a hand through my messy hair, exhaling slowly as I pulled my shirt over my head. Sophia stirred slightly in bed, the sheet barely covering her bare skin, but she didn’t wake up.I needed to get out of here. The moment I stepped toward the door, a sudden movement outside made me freeze. My sharp senses picked up a familiar scent—one that I had thought would never be this close to me again.Cara.A sharp pang of something—guilt, regret, something else I refused to name—hit my chest. I turned my head slightly and there she was, standing a few feet away from the doorway, her body rigid, her fists clenched so tight I could see the whiteness of her knuckles even in the dim light. Her wide eyes were brimming with emotion, her lips parted as if she wanted to speak, but I couldn’t let her.If Sophia heard her, everything would get worse.I moved faster

Chapter Seventy Nine : A Future TogetherDamon's POVThe crisp night breeze swept against me as I entered inside. My head was still a mess from the conversation I'd just shared with Cara, but I shook it off. There was no going back now. Cara had long ago made her decision, and so had I.What mattered most now was Sophia. As I stepped inside the main house, her voice was instant. "Where is he?" Sophia's frustration was evident as she marched from the living room, searching for me.There was a faint smile on my lips as I stood in hiding and observed her for a short while. She was beautiful, her hair untidy from having slept, her feet barefoot and moving lightly against the hardwood floor. When she finally turned and saw me standing in the doorway, her hazel eyes widened."You!" She marched toward me, her face half-relieved, half-angry.I didn't have time to react before she raised her small fist and punched it against my chest. Not hard—hard enough to be noticed."."Where were you?" sh

Chapter Eighty: The Mating Announcement(Cara's POV)The moment Sophia walked into the house, I knew that something had happened. Her face radiated joy, her eyes sparkling, her step light. There was an unmistakable glow about her, and I already hated it. Whatever the cause of such joy could not be good for me.She barely even looked at the rest of us—Liam, Vanessa, our parents, and me—before smearing her hands together and crying out with a strangled grin. "I have news!"I was nervous sick. What could she possibly have to be that excited about? Liam, who'd been lying on the couch with his arms crossed, braced himself at once. His face darkened, and he gave her a snarling stare."What news?" His tone was tight-lipped, cautious.Sophia took a deep breath, almost smiling as she dropped the bomb."Damon and I are having our mating ceremony next month!"There was silence. The entire room halted.I held my breath as a jagged, searing pain tore through my chest.No. This can't happen. My f

Chapter Eighty One – Cara's Plan(Cara's POV)I was sitting in my room, staring at the wall, my mind elsewhere.Sophia.The taste of her name was bitter on my tongue. That woman had everything handed to her on a silver platter. The respect, the love, the adoration of the pack. And now. now she would get Damon as well.I clenched my fists.No.I wouldn't let her.Damon was dominant, strong, and powerful—the kind of man who required a woman equal to himself, not some little whiny person who made a fuss over her emotions. If anyone was going to stand at his side, it would be me.Not her.My lips spread into a slow smile. If Sophia wished to be his partner, I'd make her live to regret it.Damon was a man. And men had vulnerabilities. It wouldn't take much to distract him.If he needed someone in his bed, it should be me. If he needed someone to run beside him as his equal, it should be me.I stood up, smoothing my dress, already thinking about how this would go down.I knew just what to d

Chapter 82: Her Regret(Damon's POV)The moment the door groaned open, my head snapped toward it, my brows knitting as I saw her standing there—Cara.I hadn't expected her to show up here. Not after all of this. Not after I had made it so clear that I had picked Sophia. But there she was, standing in my doorway, eyes dark and inscrutable, lips twisted into a small, knowing smile. A dangerous smile.I stood up, pushing away from my desk where I had sat with my mind off in space. "What are you doing here?" My voice was sharper than I intended, but I didn't care.Cara took a slow step forward, her hips angling ever so slightly, her eyes locked on mine. There was something unnerving about the way she walked—like an animal stalking its victim."I came to see you," she said simply, her tone as smooth as honey.I clamped my jaw. "You shouldn't have come here, Cara. You know why."She let out a soft laugh, tilting her head and smiling. "Why? Because of Sophia?"My heart ached to hear Sophia's

Chapter Eighty-One: A Dangerous Game Cara's POV The air was heavy with heat and the scent of sweat. My body still vibrated, my skin warm from Damon's touch. I lay next to him, feeling his heartbeat return to normal as he stared at the ceiling. He had been silent for some time now, and I knew why. He was thinking about Sophia. That name made my stomach curl with anger. I hated her. I resented how she had Damon's heart, how he looked at her with so much love and adoration. But tonight, I changed that. Tonight, Damon was mine. I rolled onto my side, resting my head on my hand as I looked at him. His jaw was clenched, his lips folded into a thin line. I could see the guilt fighting inside of him. Too bad for him—I wasn't going to let him regret this. I leaned in and traced my fingers over his chest, my caress soft, taunting. "Promise me something, Damon," I breathed low. His gaze snapped to mine, dark and unfathomable. "What?" I smiled sweetly. "On the day of the mating ceremony,

Chapter 155 :?The Weight in My Chest(Damon's POV)The air in my study was stale. The room smelled of old pages and quiet reflection. I had a book in my hand, but I wasn't reading. My eyes had been on the same line for the past five minutes. My mind wasn't calm. Not since that message came.Alec Davis — the name that had been so important to Sophia. Her favorite author. The one author who had written stories that had comforted her when the world had been cruel. Now that same author wanted to meet her in person. Alone.I didn't care for it. Not at all. It was strange. It felt too abrupt. Too personal. And something in the message… it had my wolf unsettle with unease.Just then, the door to our bedroom opened.Sophia stepped out. She wore light jeans and a soft cream-colored sweater. Her hair was brushed back neatly. She looked beautiful, but her face carried excitement, like a child about to meet her hero.“Damon,” she said gently.I turned in my chair, eyes meeting hers.“I’m getting

Chapter one hundred and fifty four : Cara's BargainPOV: CaraIt was cold air, night air, gliding down my body like a caress. I walked through the woods, taking my time, no hurry. My black trench coat was enveloped around me, heels of shoes sinking delicately into sodden ground as I went deeper into the trees. The moon was silver, distant, cold—like I am tonight.I'd given the message to Caleb hours ago. He responded right away."Same location. Midnight."This is the time I need Caleb the most, I know he doesn’t like Damon, and this is the time for me to act like I care about him.I smiled as I walked towards the small cabin hidden at the edge of the border, a place that only the two of us knew. A place that was filled with tired memories, lust, lies… and now, a new plan. The door was already open before I could knock. He stood there, big and broad, still with that same obstinate look he always had. Chapter 152: Something She's Keeping SecretDamon's POVThe room was peaceful.Sophia was in my arms, her head gently on my chest. She smelled of roses. Her breath was hot on my skin. Outside was quiet. No guard shouting. No wolves training. Just us. Alone. Safe.I kissed her forehead gently. She smiled faintly but did not open her eyes. She was tired. Maybe it was everything that happened today. The elders visited us earlier. They brought laughter and gifts—but tension as well. They kept reminding us that the pack needed an heir. That we owed it. A future to build.Sophia had said nothing after they left. I'd known something was bothering her. I hadn't asked. Not yet. I'd known she'd tell me when she was ready. Now, in this soft silence, I sensed her release once more."Are you alright?" Chapter 151: "The Game Begins"POV: CaraThe room was quiet—too quiet. Just the way I liked it.I perched on the bed in the guest room Damon had so generously allowed me to occupy. A part of me was entertained at how uneasy Sophia and Damon both were with my presence, yet they didn't have the backbone to tell me to leave. Guilt is such a potent leash. And I intended to tug it tighter.I deliberately folded my knees, watching as the curtain twitched to an imaginary dance created by a whiff of a breeze coming in through the window. Outside, the pack revelled, their laughter and cheers causing my stomach to churn—though not from envy. The logs popped as I stared into the fire, my mind far away. My mind wandered back to earlier today—when the elders had come to demand an heir, when Sophia had looked at me with that mixture of hope and fear. I had told her everything would be fine, but that little ball of doubt in my chest wouldn't go away. The heir. Was I already letting her down?I had promised Sophia that I would never abandon her. The whole pack house had finally quieted down—no footsteps, no whispers, no elders pacing back and forth like they did during the day.I was sitting at the window, knees tucked to my chest, a warm shawl wrapped around me. The old people had come to the pack house with smiles and laughter, hailing Damon for the win and me and him as well for falling in love with each other. They'd brought their presents—wasted bread, stitched cloaks, even a carved wooden figure of a wolf symbolizing protection. We'd had tea, we'd chuckled, and I'd almost forgotten all the sorrow and fight leading up to it.But then. like a storm in the midst of a peaceful sea, one of the elders—Elder Mavin—scratched his throat and spoke the words that sent shivers through the whole room."It's time for an heir."Just like that.I blinked, wondering if I'd just misunderstood. The others nodded. I sat beside Damon, his hand casually on mine. Cara, as always, in the corner of the sofa, feigning to read a book, but her gaze flicked our way every now and then. It was the first time in days that everything was quiet, as if we were breathing peacefully after weeks of chaos. The soft knock on the door stilled the room. "Who's that?" I breathed, looking at Damon. He got up, his broad shoulders moving with stealthy ease, and opened the door. And then… I saw them. Three age-old men, dressed in rich earth-tinted robes, walked in. The minute they entered, the mood transformed. These were the Pack Elders—the dignified council governing tradition, law, and legacy. Damon dipped his head, and I got up, evidencing a humble inclination of the head. "Elder Mako, Elder Linna, Elder Barro," Damon greeted them. "What do we
