I waited outside his door, letting the soft glow from the hallway torches wash over me.

My hands rested lightly against the wall, fingers curling as though I could absorb the tension in the air through my skin. I knew he was in there, pacing or sitting, perhaps thinking of her.. Of her.

I stepped inside before he could summon any polite interruption.

“Fael,” I said, the name sharp and deliberate, letting it slice through the quiet of his room.
