Chapter 1

The rough stone floor of the study bit into my knees through the thin linen of my tunic. My hands, calloused and mapped with fine scars from years of forced labor, pushed the heavy scrub brush across the grand oak floorboards.

In the Ironfang Pack, I was worse than a servant. I was a Null, a wolf without a beast, a nameless shadow tolerated only because Alpha Dracon’s official wife, Lysandra, delighted in having a royal punching bag to contrast against her golden daughter, Cressida.

I paused, wiping sweat from my forehead with the back of my forearm. Beneath the edge of my brush, a line in the wood looked off. The grain did not align.

My silver eyes narrowed. I had scrubbed this floor every morning for five years. I knew every splinter, every knot in the oak.

Resting my palm flat against the timber, I pressed down. A faint click echoed through the silent room.

The edge of a floorboard popped upward by half an inch.

I glanced toward the heavy mahogany doors of the study. The hallway was quiet, save for the distant laughter of Cressida down in the courtyard.

Working quickly, I hooked my fingers under the raised board and pried it free.

Hidden in the hollow dark beneath lay a bundle wrapped in dark silk.

I lifted it out. The silk fell away to reveal a thick stack of parchment bound with silver thread and stamped with fresh red wax seals.

I broke the first seal.

The handwriting was unmistakably Alaric’s, sharp and arrogant. But these were not military reports or pack ledgers. They were poems. Explicit, desperate, feverish letters addressed to Cressida.

My sweet Luna, let her scrub the floors while I taste your lips in the shadows. She believes she holds my fated mark, but her soft neck belongs only to my blade...

My heart slammed against my ribs like a trapped bird. My fingers trembled, but my face remained dead marble.

I did not cry. Tears were a luxury for girls who had someone to comfort them.

I flipped to the bottom scroll, breaking the final black wax seal. My eyes scanned the archaic script, and the room seemed to lose all air.

It was an ancient blood-pact ritual.

The Null child carries the unawakened core. On the eve of the winter solstice, her blood will be drained upon the altar of the trial. Her life force shall transfer entirely to Lady Cressida, granting her the strength of two wolves and securing Alpha Alaric’s absolute dominance over the territory.

The date at the bottom was tonight.

"You always were too curious for your own good, Vesper."

A cold voice cut through the stillness.

I turned my head slowly. The grand doors of the study were already closed.

Standing by the threshold was Alaric, his tall frame blocking the sunlight, a cruel smile curling his handsome lips.

Beside him stepped Cressida, dripping in velvet and jewels, her arm wrapped possessively around Alaric’s elbow.

Behind them stood Alpha Dracon, his heavy eyes cold and unfeeling, flanked by his wife, Lysandra.

"You weren’t supposed to find those until you were already bound to the altar," Cressida purred, stepping forward with her chin tilted high.

"Though I suppose it doesn't matter now. A servant doesn't get to choose when she serves her masters."

I slowly stood up, tucking the scrolls tightly against my ribs. I calculated the distance between myself and the balcony window behind me.

Ten paces.

A three-story drop into the rose garden.

"You slept with my sister while promising me the fated bond," I said, my voice eerily calm, cutting through the heavy air of the room.

"And you plan to murder me to cover your incompetence."

Alaric sneered, drawing a long, silver-tipped dagger from his belt.

"You have no wolf, Vesper. You are nothing. Your blood is the only valuable thing you possess, and you should be honored that it will serve your sister’s greatness."

"Grab her," Alpha Dracon barked, his voice booming like thunder. "The solstice sun sets in an hour. We perform the ritual now."

Alaric lunged forward, his Alpha pressure washing over the room in a crushing wave designed to force a wolf to their knees.

But I had no wolf to crush.

I dodged sideways, throwing the heavy scrub bucket directly at Alaric’s face. Soapy water splashed across his eyes, blinding him for a split second as he cursed violently.

I bolted toward the balcony, but Lysandra moved with sudden, unnatural speed, cutting off my exit with a silver rod in hand.

Dracon caught me from behind, his giant fist clamping around my throat, cutting off my breath instantly.

"Pathetic to the very end," Dracon growled in my ear, dragging me backwards as Cressida laughed, clapping her hands in delight.

I thrashed, my fingernails digging into Dracon’s wrist, but my weak human body was no match for an Alpha.

As darkness began to creep into the edges of my vision, my silver eyes locked onto Alaric, who was wiping the soapy water from his face, his eyes burning with toxic fury.

I did not beg.

I did not scream.

I simply stared at them, imprinting every single face into my mind as the air left my lungs completely.

Maeve’s words hung in the air.Did you truly believe I didn't know you survived the chasm? My heart skipped a violent beat. A cold drop of sweat slid down the back of my neck. I tightened my grip on my shortsword, the leather wrapping digging sharply into my palm. I thought I had cornered her, but Maeve was looking at me like I was a piece on her chessboard.Ronan shifted closer. His massive shoulder brushed against mine. The furnace heat rolling off his body grounded me, chasing away the sudden chill in my blood. I took a slow, deep breath."You knew," I said, keeping my voice steady. "But you didn't stop me."Maeve stopped on the bottom step of the dais. She didn't look at Dracon, who was bleeding on the floor from his broken nose. She didn't look at Alaric, who was weeping quietly over his pinned hand. She looked only at the glowing gold mark on my chest."Why would I?" Maeve asked smoothly. "Alpha Dracon grew greedy. He tried to spill sacred blood to elevate his spoiled daughter."

The parchment scrolls slapped against the polished marble floor with a sound like a crack of thunder. They tumbled across the dais, unrolling until the dark red wax seals and Alaric’s jagged, arrogant handwriting lay exposed under the blinding light of the crystal chandeliers. The silence in the Grand Throne Room was absolute. No one dared to move; no one even seemed to breathe. Ronan’s crushing King’s Aura kept every guard, lord, and noble pinned to the stone floor, their chests heaving against the suffocating pressure.Alaric stared at the scrolls lying inches from his trembling knees. His face had gone from pale to a sickly, ash gray."Vesper... wait... listen to me—""Read them," I commanded, my voice slicing through the heavy air like a razor. "Or should I read them for you, Alpha? Should I recite the poetry you sent to my sister while I scrubbed the dirt from your boots? Or perhaps the blood-pact ritual where you planned to drain my life force on the winter solstice?"Whispers e

I gripped the hilt of my shortsword so tightly my knuckles turned white.Through the narrow brass spy-grate embedded in the stone landing, the Grand Throne Room opened up like a gilded cage. Floating crystal chandeliers cast a golden glow over a sea of velvet tunics, silk gowns, and silver platters heaped with roasted meats. Over a hundred noble lords, Alpha leaders, and military commanders filled the hall, laughing and sipping wine, completely oblivious to the darkness waiting behind the walls. My eyes swept the floor, cutting straight through the crowd until I locked onto my targets.Alpha Dracon stood near the foot of the raised dais, puffing his chest out in a formal dark-red tunic, holding his goblet high. Beside him, Lysandra preened, her face painted with white powder and ruby lipstick as she gossiped with a circle of southern Duchesses. And right beside them stood Alaric and Cressida.Cressida wore a dazzling silk gown dyed in royal turquoise, a pearl tiara sitting crookedly o

The outer slums of the Royal Capital smelled of damp river mud, coal smoke, and cheap ale. Tall, ramshackle wooden tenements leaned inward over the narrow cobblestone alleys, blocking out the pale blue light of dawn.I kept my hood pulled low over my face, the dark leather cloak wrapped tightly around my body to hide my blood-stained armor. Beside me, Ronan’s massive frame drew wary glances from the few stray workers stumbling home from late shifts, but his dark shadow magic bent the dim morning light around him, blurring his features into an intimidating, nameless silhouette."Down this alley," I whispered, turning off the main thoroughfare into a tight, filthy lane lined with stacked timber crates. At the end of the alley stood a crooked, two-story stone house with boarded-up windows and an overgrown iron gate. A copper sign hung lopsided above the door, its faint lettering reading: Lower City Archival Records.I walked up to the heavy oak door and knocked three times—two quick taps

The high cobblestone highway to the Royal Capital stretched through the pass like an endless black ribbon under the pale winter moon. Behind us, the burning ruins of the Ironfang border post painted the night sky in ugly, angry streaks of orange and crimson. We walked in silence, our paces matched. The cold mountain air bit at my face, but the royal mark burning beneath my cloak radiated a steady, unyielding heat. Inside my chest, the shadow core hummed, entirely awake and hungering for the reckoning ahead.Ronan matched my stride, his dark cloak billowing in the wind like a set of heavy wings. His broken iron shackles clanked softly against his boots with every step."You are quiet, Vesper," he said, his deep voice carrying easily over the whistling gale."I am calculating," I replied without looking at him, my eyes fixed on the horizon. "The border guard is dead, but news of their silence will reach Alpha Dracon by tomorrow afternoon. When his patrol scouts do not return, he will as

The wind coming off the northern pass carried the sharp smell of pine and upcoming snow. We stayed low in the treeline above the valley road, hidden by the thick brush and the heavy shadows Ronan spun around us. Below us stood the Ironfang border checkpoint—a massive wooden fortress built across the narrow mountain gorge. Torchfire flared along the high palisade walls, illuminating thirty guards stationed on the catwalks. Heavy iron gates blocked the cobblestone road leading toward the Royal Capital, and at the center of the yard, two iron-reinforced towers housed heavy ballistas aimed down the pass. "Thirty on the walls," I whispered, resting my hand on the hilt of my shortsword. "Ten more inside the lower guardhouse, and six posted at the gate mechanism." Ronan crouched beside me, his towering frame perfectly still. His golden eyes swept over the fortress, calculating entry points with the practiced ease of a veteran commander. "They are relaxed," Ronan noted, his voice barely a
