“Damien…” I start, but my voice comes out weaker than I intended.

“Hmm?” He doesn’t pull away, and that simple sound vibrates against my skin.

“I can’t concentrate when you’re—” I stop myself before I finish, realizing just how much I’m giving away.

He smirks, clearly catching on. “Too distracting, huh?”

“Just a little,” I admit, though it comes out more like a breathless confession than I’d like.

He doesn’t move, though. If anything, he steps even closer, and his hands slide down my arms until they rest on my waist. “Maybe that’s a good thing.”

I shiver at his words, but before I can respond, I stumble as the magic flares again, throwing me off-balance. Damien’s hands tighten on my waist, steadying me, and I swear I feel a spark of something more than just magic pass between us.

“You all right?” His voice is rougher now, like he’s fighting to keep himself in check.

“I’m fine,” I grumble, trying to brush it off, but I can’t ignore how my heart is racing, or the heat that’s bui

For someone I assumed would be indifferent about East Hills, she’s putting her all into this defense.I lean against a nearby tree, half-smiling despite myself. “You’re full of surprises, Isadora. Can’t say I ever pictured you out here wiring traps.”She laughs, a dry, humorless sound. “Oh, I’m sure you thought I was all etiquette lessons and book clubs. And don’t get me wrong, I did plenty of reading. But I’m here now, and I’m more than capable of protecting what’s mine.”Something in the way she says “mine” catches me off-guard. There’s a fierceness I didn’t expect. A claim to this territory, to this pack. Maybe even a claim on me, though I doubt she’d admit it.“Well, let’s see what you can do, then,” I say. “Because if these defenses don’t work, you’re the one explaining it to the council.”She rolls her eyes, packing up her bag. “Trust me, Alec. When it comes to protecting this pack, I won’t be the one doing the explaining.”As we finish setting the last jammer, Isadora straighte

Alec “Well, don’t just stand there looking pretty, Alec. If you’re going to hover, at least pay attention.” Isadora’s tone is biting, like I’m the one dragging her out here instead of the other way around. I cross my arms, giving her an unimpressed look as she kneels beside one of the older traps on the western boundary. We’ve been at this for all of ten minutes, and she’s already talking to me like I’m some clueless newbie she’s been saddled with. This, after practically demanding I tag along so she could “show me” the pack’s weak points. “Alright, then,” I say, trying not to sound sarcastic. “Enlighten me.” She glances over her shoulder with a sigh. “The wiring here is old. The trip mechanism isn’t sensitive enough, so anything with a trace of magic—say, a demon slipping through the boundaries—could go unnoticed, especially if it’s in its true form. With the state these traps are in, they wouldn’t catch anything but the most obvious threat.” I follow her line of sight to the wi

Alec clears his throat, looking faintly embarrassed, but there’s a flicker of pride there, too, like he’s actually touched by her words. “It’s been interesting, that’s for sure.”I nod, watching them both, and I have to admit, there’s something endearing about their dynamic. Alec—doting, protective, the complete opposite of the sarcastic, hard-headed guy I know. And Jade—bold, comfortable in her own skin, and clearly at ease here in a way that catches me off-guard.“Well, I’m glad you’re here,” I say honestly. “It’s nice meeting someone who knows him better than just the alpha version.” I give Alec a pointed look. “Maybe you can tell me what I’m really in for,” I add.Jade grins, giving Alec a mischievous look. “Oh, I could tell you stories. But I’ll save those for another time.” She glances at the window, her expression turning thoughtful. “Especially since, well… there’s a bit more going on around here than just honeymoon festivities.”Alec tenses beside her, and I see the briefest

IsadoraI am not a morning person. Not by a long shot. So if I’d known being married to Alec Thornton meant I’d be roused by hushed voices and the smell of burnt coffee before the sun has hardly come up, I might’ve signed up for another extended sabbatical instead.I crack open one eye as the voices reach me, faint but insistent, filtering up from downstairs. I sit up, tugging the blanket around my shoulders, and strain to make out the words. No use from up here—this house is way too big. But the curiosity eats at me, and before I can second-guess myself, I’m slipping out of bed and moving toward the door.I step into the hallway, careful not to let the floors creak under my feet as I edge down the stairs. One voice, unmistakably Alec’s, carries a hint of tension, and the other—a lighter, more playful tone—I recognize as belonging to his sister, Jade.I creep down, stopping just before the last step, hidden but close enough to finally hear them clearly. The voices float up from the ki

She doesn’t answer, but the look in her eyes says it all. This isn’t going to be easy, and we both know it.I stare at her, trying to keep my temper in check, but all I feel is the heat rising under my collar, frustration building up to a sharp edge. I’d brought her here tonight with every intention of trying—trying—to smooth things over, to apologize for how we left things in the past. But here we are. She’s made it abundantly clear that she’s not interested in apologies, unity, or anything close to understanding.“You know what?” I growl. “Fine. If you want this to be a war zone, then have it your way, Isadora.”She rolls her eyes. “Glad we’re on the same page.”Without another word, I turn, striding out of the room, leaving her standing there with that defiant glint in her eye like she’s won something. The urge to slam the door behind me is strong, but I force myself to keep my footsteps steady, each one echoing through the house as I make my way to the living room. The last thing

“Doesn’t it?” I fire back, my tone cold. “Because that’s exactly what it looked like. While the rest of us were here, dealing with everything the demons left behind, you were conveniently out of reach. You didn’t know half of what we went through.”“Maybe I didn’t,” she snaps. “But you don’t know what I went through, either. I came back, didn’t I?”“Oh, yeah, sure,” I say, sarcasm dripping from each word. “You came back when it suited you. After you’d had your fill of wherever-you-went, you waltz back in and expect everyone to pretend like nothing happened.”Her hands are clenched into fists, her eyes flashing like she’s barely holding herself together. “You don’t get it. Justbecause I wasn’t here doesn’t mean I didn’t care. I love this pack as much as you do.”“Do you?” I challenge. “Because it sure doesn’t look that way. All I see is someone who leaves when things get rough, who thinks she can come and go like none of it matters.”“Don’t turn this around on me, Alec,” she snaps. “Ju
