Asher did not wait for a second report.

“Bring it back,” he said. “All of them. Now.”

The runner was already turning. “They were coming. Sable sent me ahead when the wrap went dead.”

My arm burned in hard beats. I kept it against my ribs so I would not look at it.

Ronan stayed at my side. “When they get close, tell me if it changes.”

“You will see it on my face.”

We heard them before we saw them.

Steel. A shout. Then Sable’s voice, raw and short.

“Hold the wrap. Do not drop it. Move.”

They came

His fingers left my arm.The two voices did not leave as fast. The bond still shook in my chest, hot and raw. The pattern still sat in the mark, sour and delayed, like a word that had not been allowed to finish.Ronan dragged in a breath and got his head up. Dirt stuck to his mouth. “Did he take you?”“No. He hit both. I stayed up. You went down.”“That is new.” His eyes found the Warden. “He did not like it.”The Warden flexed the two fingers he had used, as if they had touched something he had not planned to touch. The mild look was back, but it sat thinner than before.“A second channel,” he said. “The bond. I had the shape of your no. I did not fully own that.”Sable coughed on the stones. Blood on her teeth. “Then use it. Get us off this rim before he owns it.”I hauled Ronan to his feet. He swayed and locked his knees. The cloak with the seed had fallen between us, still knotted, still beating faintly through the cloth. He grabbed it before it could roll toward the scar.“Can yo

Sable did not wait for him to finish the speech. She came down the rise with her blade already moving. Pell loosed the arrow on the same breath. The arrow hit the Warden in the chest and stopped like it had struck thick water. It hung there a second, shaking, then fell into the dirt, clean. No hole. No blood.“Move,” Ronan said.We did not take the open path. We stayed on the rim. The sour light breathed in the scar and made the bowl hard to look at. Cold on the cheeks. Iron on the tongue.Sable reached him first. Her steel should have opened his side. It slid. Not off a guard. Off him. The sound was wrong, like hitting packed wet cloth. Her boots dug in. She put her full weight behind the next cut.Same thing. The blade touched. The blade failed. She staggered from the lack of bite. He barely turned. One hand caught her strap like she weighed nothing and threw her. She hit the outer stones hard. The air left her in a grunt. She did not get up at once.“Sable!” Pell ran in anyway.A c

No one moved first. The man from the scar did not need to. He already stood in the bowl like the ground knew him. The sour light sat at his back and did not touch his skin.Sable’s voice came from the rise, low. “What are you?”He tipped his head, curious, as if the question pleased him. “I have a lot of names. Warden is the one that lasts. The rest were only mouths.”Pell kept an arrow on him and did not lose it. “He does not smell like a wolf.”“I am not one,” the man said. Simple. Mild. “I have worn wolves. I have worn better things and worse things. A mouth is a mouth. When one wears out, I take another.”Ronan shifted so I was not the closest body to him. The cloak with the seed stayed in his hands, off my skin.“Stay on the edge,” he said to me.“I am.”“If he talks you toward the cut, you do not take a step. You talk back from here.”“I hear you.”The Warden looked at my bandaged arm the way a person looks at a page they have already started writing on. The dark curve under the

The sliver beat in the cloak like it had a pulse of its own.“Keep it off your skin,” Ronan said.“I am.”We were still on the edge. Not in the heart. The scar glowed thinner now, but it had not gone out. The white core kept looking for the seed in my hands. Each pulse put that iron taste back on my tongue.Sable shouted from the back rise. “Whatever you pull, get farther from the cut.”“If I run with it, it may pull harder,” I said.Ronan’s eyes stayed on the scar. “Then refuse first. Then move.”I shifted the cloak bundle so the weight sat in the cloth, not against my bandage. The seed slid anyway. For one second the wrap loosened and the stone kissed the dark line on my arm.The light screamed. Not a voice. A sound like metal tearing. The whole bowl went white. Cold slammed into my face and filled my nose. The mark under the cloth flared, a bright ugly curve, and the scream poured into that line like it had found a pipe it already owned.I dropped to one knee. The cloak almost left

“No more stones,” I said.Sable already had her hands off the next one. “I see it. We fed it. We stop.”The light in the scar stayed thick and cold. It sat in the cut like a live wire laid in dirt. Each pulse threw a pale wash over the bowl. The dirt went bone-colored, then brown again. The hum ran through my teeth and into the bone behind my ears.My arm burned with the same beat. Under the bandage, the mark felt wet and tight, like the skin had shrunk around a second pulse.Pell lost another arrow at the back rise and dropped behind a cracked block. The block still had a faint glow in its broken cuts, leftover from when we fed the scar. “The heavy line is still coming. If we stay here they pin us to the bowl.”Ronan looked along the rim, not down the open path. The lane they had cleared was still empty and bright. “Then we changed jobs. We do not break the ring. We take the scrap out of the cut.”Sable nodded once. Sweat cut a clean line through the dust on her face. “You two on the

Ronan’s hand stayed on my unhurt wrist.“Do not stand up,” he said. “If you stand, your body will take their lane before your head does.”“I am not taking it.”“Then stay down and keep saying that.”The open path below waited like a mouth. Blades down. Space cleared. The thread in the scar still leaned toward the rise. It looked thin from here, but it had a wet shine, like heat over metal. When it pulsed, I tasted iron.Sable crawled closer. “We are not going down the middle. Pell, can you reach an outer stone from here?”“Yes. The near ring. Not the scar.”“Then we smash the outer stones. If there is a working piece on them, we smash that too. We do not touch the heart.”Pell’s eyes flicked past us, back the way we had climbed. His face changed.“We may not have time for a clean choice,” he said. “Heavier force on the back door. Not the eight in the bowl. More. Coming up the same rise we used.”Sable looked once. I did not need to. The sound was enough. Many feet. No care for quiet n
