I found Asher in the kitchen, still awake, going through reports by lamplight.

"You're up late," he said, not looking up.

"Couldn't sleep."

"Bad dreams, or good gossip."

"Neither. Wren said something before she left. I can't stop turning it over."

"That sounds ominous."

"It might be. I honestly don't know yet."

"Sit down. Tell me."

That got his attention. He set the report down.

"What did she say?"

"You're going to think it's nothing."

"Let me decide that."

"That Ronan never wanted to reject me

“Not for a long time,” I repeated. “How long is not a long time, Mother. Give me actual years.”“Since before you were born.”The words landed heavier than I expected, settling into the room like something physical.“Before I was born. That means every decision I thought was yours, every consequence I’ve spent my whole life absorbing as your choices, wasn’t fully yours at all.”“Some of it was mine. I want to be clear about that. I made choices within the space I was given. I didn’t have as much space as either of us assumed.”“That’s a careful way to describe losing control of your own pack.”“It’s the honest way. I’ve stopped having the energy to phrase things carefully tonight.”“Start from the beginning. All of it. I’m done accepting fragments.”She took a slow breath, gathering herself in a way I’d never once seen her need to before tonight.“The oath,” she said. “The alliance with Voss. The silence clause. All of it traces back to a threat I’ve been managing since before you wer

The news reached Ashguard before I’d even finished laying out everything Callum and I had found.“My Prince.” A messenger, breathless, cutting through the study door without waiting to be announced. “The operative sent to Kade territory. He’s dead. Poisoned, from what the surviving reports say, before he could be properly questioned.”Callum and I exchanged a look.“Poisoned by whom,” I asked.“Unknown. The assumption is a failsafe, triggered on capture.”“That’s not an assumption. That’s a certainty, given everything we’ve already found.”“Should I inform the Queen,” the messenger asked.“I’ll inform her myself.”“She’s already been told, my Prince. A separate courier reached her moments before I came to you.”“Then she already knows more than she’s told either of us tonight.”The messenger left, and I made my way toward my mother’s study, no longer willing to wait for a convenient moment to have this conversation.I found her already in motion, pacing rather than seated, a stack of

“He won’t talk,” the guard said, meeting me outside the holding cell. “Not to any of us. He asked for you by name.”“Me specifically.”“Said he’d only speak to Briar Hale. Nobody else.”“How is he? Physically.”“Stable, for now. The healer patched what she could. He’s still weak.”I exchanged a glance with Asher, who nodded once, tight and reluctant.“I’ll be right outside,” he said. “One word and I’m through that door.”“I know.”“I don’t like this.”“Neither do I. I still need to hear whatever he’s willing to say.”The cell was small, bare stone, a single lantern casting long shadows across the assassin’s bound and bloodied form. He looked up when I entered, something unreadable behind his eyes.“You came,” he said.“You asked for me. Here I am.”“I wasn’t sure you would.”“I want answers. That’s worth showing up for.”“Most people in your position would have sent someone else. Keep their distance.”“I’m not most people. You’ve probably noticed that by now.”He studied me for a long

The alarm bell tore through the night before I’d even fully woken, sharp and relentless, the kind of sound that meant something had already gone wrong.“Inner perimeter,” Asher shouted, already moving past my door, half dressed and fully alert. “They’re inside.”“Inside. How. The outer sentries never sounded a warning.”“I don’t know. Move.”I didn’t need telling twice. I grabbed my blade and ran, the corridor outside already filled with wolves scrambling into some formation, panic and training fighting for control of the same bodies.“Report,” Asher barked at the first sentry we passed.“Two intruders confirmed, maybe three. They came through the eastern maintenance gap, the one under repair. Nobody was watching it closely enough.”“Casualties.”“Unknown. Chaos everywhere.”“How did they get past the outer ring without a single horn sounding,” Asher demanded.“They didn’t cross the outer ring, Alpha. That’s the point. The maintenance gap sits inside it. They were already close before

Callum spread the new reports across the table beside the old requisition logs, candlelight flickering over both.“Alder territory,” he said. “Two assassination attempts on council members in the last month. Both unclaimed.”“Unclaimed doesn’t mean unconnected.”“That’s what I thought too. Look at the method.”I leaned over the report, scanning the description. “Quiet. Precise. No struggle.”“Same signature as the sentry we lost at Kade territory. Same signature as half a dozen incidents I’ve now found scattered across three other territories, going back further than I expected.”“How far back does this go, exactly?”“That’s the part that unsettled me enough to bring it straight to you instead of digging further alone.”“How much further?”“Years, Ronan. Not weeks. Not months tied neatly to whatever’s happening with Briar right now. Years.”Something cold settled low in my stomach.“You’re certain of the dates.”“As certain as old records let me be. I cross-referenced three separate s

The envoy stood waiting in the same training yard where I’d first fought Dax weeks ago, arms clasped behind her back, composure only barely holding against whatever she’d expected to find here.“You’re the one they knelt to,” she said, without preamble. “Briar Hale.”“That’s me.”“I represent Alder territory. We’ve had reports overnight of an army gathering inside Kade borders. My council sent me to determine whether those reports are exaggerations or genuine cause for alarm.”“Ask whatever you need to ask. I’ll give you honest answers.”“That’s more than most offer at a moment like this.”“I don’t have the patience left for anything else. You’ll get the truth, even where truth is inconvenient.”“I’d rather have inconvenient truth than comfortable fiction, if I’m being equally honest.”Asher stood a step behind me, present but silent, letting me hold the conversation without stepping in to shape it. I felt the absence of his usual political framing and understood, plainly, that this e
