VENUS

My fingers tremble around my phone as I hover over my mom’s contact. One call… just one call, and maybe this ache inside me will ease. But then I remember that mom and dad have a lot on their plate right now.

I can’t call and disturb her with my stupid heartbreak story. I can’t add my sadness to their burdens and act selfish.

With a shaky breath, I drop the idea and text Ezra instead. “Are you okay?”

I stare at the screen, willing a reply to appear. But there’s no response. If he was awake, he would have wanted to break Rowan’s jaw for hurting me.

The absence of my family gnaws at me, making me feel hollow from the inside. I wrap my arms around myself, holding on as if I might fall apart otherwise. I don’t know how long I sit there like that, curled up in bed, time blurring into nothing.

Eventually, I drag myself up. I want to eat something sweet. Ice cream will do.

It always helps with my mood. The thought feels like a tiny spark in the darkness, so I cling to it.
