I saw Evangeline walk into the hospital, and I saw the way she paused at the entrance to watch me.

I tried to ignore her, focusing on my task of trying to win the favor of the nurses again, but they ignored me. They’d been doing it all morning, but it didn’t start to hurt until Evangeline stood to watch.

It was bad enough that she had everything, but now that she saw me in this position. It filled me with rage so vile that I thought it would poison me from the inside out. I kept a firm smile on my face and kept trying to distribute the cupcakes, but no one would even glance my way.
