Aria's POV

For the first hour on our way, I tried not to think about what would happen when we meet him.

It was impossible.

At every stumbling of my horse on the rough soil, my heart was jumping with the terrible feeling that we could have been too late. I couldn't help thinking about Leo's face, his small hands stretched out toward me, his voice asking his mom. After all those years of longing to be able to be a part of his life again, somebody had taken him from me.

I looked at Draven, who wa

  • Rejected Luna of The Cursed Alpha   That bastard she bore

Serena’s POVThe frost in the Sunken Hold was different from the cold of the mountain wind; it did not shift and bite and numb the skin. It simply fell upon me like wet wool, crawling in the seams of my bones and making each breath taste like stagnant water and weeping limestone.I was curled on the cold stone floors, dragging the hem of my shift over my knees, wrapped in the rough, unbleached linen saturated with the slimy muck of dungeon walls where prisoners before me had rotted away. My nails were broken and crusted with dark red where I had clawed at the bars when my sentinels first dropped me here.My bones ached, bruised and torn by the heavy gauntlets of men who used to look aside with reverence when I roamed the galleries of the Keep, but the rage in my chest smoldered brighter than any hearth in the Keep.Luna.I had earned the title with blood and pain. Every single full moon I gulped down the bitter, fiery draught of black-spore thistle just to keep my belly flat while tho

  • Rejected Luna of The Cursed Alpha   If I hadn't rejected you

The way up from the Sunken Hold was a climb in stifling silence.Every step echoed on the stairs. Kael took the lead, his broadsword still in its sheath at his side, the golden torchlight flickering wildly up and down the damp spiraling walls. Behind him, Draven and I supported ourselves with the strength of his shoulder. His left arm held me at the small of my back. His skin burned through my cloak as hot as slag. The purple veins along his neck had gone dead and blue, but every harsh pant breathed in the faint smell of burnt ozone. We passed through the massive oak portal of the lower vaults and emerged into the High Courtyard of Valemont. The dawn on the mountains was not yet here. The sky was in an unusual color; I did not look at it much in my weak spirit. Twenty men from Draven's northern huscarls formed a strict formation in the frosty cobblestone. Their massive black-iron lamellar armor glowed with the moisture of the cold. In the front of them, their warhorses, the powerful

Next to me, on the wet floor, Draven gasped for breath, struggling to stay upright and not collapse face-first into the water with me in his arms. His obsidian bones had retracted, and his jaw, neck, and wide shoulders had turned back to normal, but with a terrible price. The black cords of the ancient vengeance hadn't vanished. Instead, they had receded into the depths of his marrow, thick and raging, pulsing with an irregular violet heat that burned through the freezing mist and melted his fevered skin.He was alive, but there was nothing inside him."Aria..." Draven rasped. "Aria..." he called again, crawling on his knees and dragging my unconscious body into his lap. "Aria, look at me! Look at me!"I tried to focus my eyes on his face, but I could not hold the light. My limbs went numb, heavy as cast iron. Inside my chest, my Nullifier core was silent, cracked, and empty like an abandoned grave.I could not breathe. The poison I had extracted from him was in my heart, freezing my

For a second I regretted that we did not come with Beta Cassian, but he was the only warrior Draven trusted to guide my son.We had come through the breaches into the depths below the Sunken Hold; torches flickered behind us, clutched in the hands of several northern huskarls who decided not to stay up there. At my side, Kael moved with his sword unsheathed, his amber eyes inspecting every jutting rock and shadow, his breath forming ragged clouds of frost."There," Kael hissed, coming to a stop on a wet ledge.Twenty feet away, on the protruding tip of the stone ledge stretching towards the dark, stormy waters, the Weeping Altar rose from the mist.It was a huge, smooth block of basalt with the shape of an open hand. Pale veins of blue lightning energy pulsed along its edges, ancient leylines drinking the cold damp of the mountains.Seated on the stone hand was Draven. He was barely recognizable as the sovereign who had taken me to his northern halls. The obsidian armor of bone had al

Once again, the roar shook the foundations of the subterranean levels with the power of an earthquake, causing the silt on the flooded sluice to ripple as if it were boiling pitch. It was not a wolf challenge. There was nothing in this roar that had to do with territorial calls or any sense whatsoever. This roar was emitted by an abominable predator trying to tear its way through a human ribcage. Our surroundings reacted to this roar immediately. Shouts echoed from within the spiraling stairwells, and then came sounds of something heavy being dropped and retreating footsteps. Even the experienced miners, who stood before the breach in the archway, started scattering, fleeing to the upper hoists, their sledgehammers left lying in the wet mud."Aria, stay behind me," Kael said, his voice dropping to the level of an Alpha command as he kicked away the pry bar he was holding and drew the heavy steel broadsword."Get out of my way," I said.I did not stop to wait for Kael and instead hitch

  • Rejected Luna of The Cursed Alpha   Draven's curse has entered its final stage

The vibration coming from the deep underground had not stopped. It came up through forty feet of solid bedrock through the thick oak flooring of the eastern suite in the form of rhythmic muffled shockwaves. Thud. Crack. Shudder. Kael’s miners were destroying the old seals of the Sunken Hold with the frenzied, unhinged desperation of condemned men struggling to stay ahead of an executioner's cleaver.Beside me on the bed, Draven was lost in his fever-induced delirium. His breathing came from his throat, sounding like wind whistling through dry leaves across the gravel. I sat next to him, watching the blackened veins spreading up from his neck toward his jawline. Each time I saw those pulsing cords, my thoughts took me back to the snow.Back to the Black Pines.I had been running with ragged, bleeding feet on the seventh day after giving birth. My body was battered, my breasts leaking milk into my torn tunic, my arms remaining painfully empty. To leave my newborn boy in someone else's ar
