Aria did not move.

For a moment, the forest seemed to close in around them, the silence pressing against her ears as his words settled deep in her chest.

Then next time, I won’t stop them.

The warning lingered.

Heavy.

Real.

Her fingers curled slightly at her sides, her instincts pulling her in two directions at once. One part of her wanted to run immediately, to disappear into the forest before anything else could go wrong.

The other part stayed exactly where she was.

Watching him.

Trying to understand.

“You expect me to trust that?” she asked finally.

Her voice was steady, but her pulse had not slowed.

His gaze did not shift.

“I don’t expect anything from you.”

That answer should have made it easier.

It did not.

Aria studied him for another second, searching for something in his expression that might explain why he had intervened at all. He had no reason to help her. No reason to warn her.

And yet he had done both.

That alone made him dangerous.

“I’ve survived this long without you,” she said.

He nodded once.

“And you almost didn’t tonight.”

The words landed harder than she expected.

Her jaw tightened, but she did not argue. There was no point. They both knew the truth of it.

The wolves who had been hunting her were not random.

They had known where to find her.

They had known how to corner her.

And worst of all, they had known she was worth something.

Aria pushed that thought aside quickly.

Not now.

She took a step back.

“If I run, like you said,” she began, her eyes still on his, “what stops you from following?”

His expression did not change.

“Nothing.”

Her breath caught.

At least he was honest.

“Then what exactly are you offering?” she asked.

“Time.”

The word was simple.

But it carried weight.

Aria felt it settle uneasily in her chest.

Time to run.

Time to think.

Time to decide.

Or time before something worse found her.

The forest shifted again.

This time, it was not silent.

It was subtle.

A faint rustle in the distance.

A change in the wind.

Aria felt it instantly.

More were coming.

Not the same pack.

Different.

Her body tensed.

“You feel it,” he said.

It was not a question.

“Yes.”

The word came out quietly.

His gaze moved past her for a brief moment, scanning the trees, calculating something she could not see.

“They won’t stop,” he said.

“They already haven’t.”

Aria’s chest tightened.

“How many?”

“Enough.”

That was not comforting.

Another sound echoed faintly through the forest.

Closer this time.

Her instincts screamed again.

Run.

Now.

She took another step back.

Then another.

He did not stop her.

Did not reach for her.

Did not move at all.

But his eyes never left her.

“Why me?” she asked suddenly.

The question slipped out before she could stop it.

It hung between them, heavier than anything else she had said.

For a moment, he said nothing.

Then he looked at her differently.

Not like prey.

Not like something to chase.

Like something he already knew.

“You’ll find out,” he said.

Her stomach tightened.

That was not an answer.

But it felt like one.

The forest around them seemed to grow darker as the moon shifted behind the clouds, shadows stretching longer between the trees.

Aria took another step back.

Then another.

She was already preparing to run.

This time for real.

This time without stopping.

“If I see you again,” she said, her voice quieter now, “I won’t hesitate.”

It was a warning.

A weak one.

But it was all she had.

Something almost unreadable passed through his expression.

“Then don’t stop running,” he replied.

That was not a threat.

It felt like a promise.

Aria turned.

And this time, she did not hesitate.

She ran.

The forest rushed past her again, but everything felt different now. The paths she once trusted no longer felt safe. The shadows that once hid her now felt like they were watching.

Her breathing grew uneven as her thoughts began to catch up with her.

Worth more alive.

Not the only ones hunting you.

You’ll find out.

None of it made sense.

But all of it mattered.

A branch snapped behind her.

Aria’s head turned sharply, her body reacting instantly.

Nothing.

But she did not slow.

Another sound came from her right.

Closer.

She changed direction immediately, cutting through a tighter path, her movements faster now, sharper.

They were not howling this time.

That was worse.

Silent hunters.

Organized.

Disciplined.

Her chest tightened.

This was no longer just a chase.

This was controlled.

Planned.

She pushed harder, ignoring the strain building in her legs. Her lungs burned, her muscles ached, but she forced herself forward.

She would not be caught.

Not like this.

Not by them.

The ground shifted suddenly beneath her feet.

Aria barely caught herself before slipping, her hand shooting out to steady against a tree. She pushed off quickly, continuing forward without stopping.

Then she felt it.

A presence.

Not behind her.

Not beside her.

Ahead.

She froze.

Her breath caught as her eyes lifted slowly.

A figure stepped out from between the trees.

Not the Alpha.

Someone else.

Tall.

Still.

Waiting.

Aria’s pulse spiked violently.

She took a step back instinctively.

Another presence appeared behind her.

Then another to her left.

Her chest tightened as realization hit her all at once.

This was not a chase anymore.

It was a trap.

“You’re harder to catch than they said,” one of them spoke.

The voice was calm.

Too calm.

Aria’s gaze moved between them quickly, her mind racing, calculating distances, numbers, escape routes.

None of them were good.

Not this time.

Not like this.

Her fingers curled as she slowly shifted her weight, preparing for the only option she had left.

Fight.

Even if she lost.

Even if it killed her.

Better than being taken.

“What do you want?” she asked.

Her voice did not shake.

She refused to let it.

The one in front of her smiled slightly.

“You.”

The word settled cold in her chest.

“Alive.”

Her heart pounded harder.

“Why?”

The smile widened just a little.

“Because you don’t know what you are yet.”

Something in her stomach dropped.

Before she could react, one of them moved.

Fast.

Too fast.

Aria twisted sharply, barely avoiding the first grab, her body reacting on instinct as she struck back, her movements quick and precise.

But there were too many.

Hands closed around her arm.

Another reached for her shoulder.

She fought harder, her breath coming fast now, her focus narrowing as adrenaline surged through her system.

She could not lose here.

She would not.

A sharp pain cut across her palm as something grazed her skin.

She barely felt it.

Until she did.

A sudden heat spread from the cut, sharp and unnatural.

Aria gasped.

Her body froze for just a second.

That was all they needed.

A hand gripped her tightly, forcing her still.

“Got you.”

Her chest rose and fell rapidly as she struggled, but her strength felt wrong now.

Slower.

Weaker.

Her vision blurred slightly.

“What did you do?” she demanded.

No one answered.

Instead, the one holding her lifted her hand slightly, watching as something dark began to spread from the cut across her skin.

Not blood.

Something else.

Aria’s breath caught.

Fear hit her properly for the first time.

Because whatever this was…

It was not normal.

And it was already inside her.

“You should have stayed hidden,” the man said quietly.

Her heart slammed violently against her ribs.

Because this time…

She knew she wasn’t getting away.
