The sound did not fade.

It rolled through the forest again, deeper this time, settling into the ground beneath them like something that belonged there long before any of them.

Aria felt it in her chest.

Not as fear.

As a pull.

Her breath caught as the heat inside her responded instantly, tightening, rising, as if whatever was coming was calling to it.

Or calling to her.

The Alpha’s hand was still on her shoulder.

Steady.

Grounding.

But even that did not stop the shift happening inside her.

“What is it?” she asked, her voice lower now, strained.

His gaze did not leave the distance.

“Something that should not be awake.”

Her pulse spiked.

Another sound followed.

Closer.

The trees ahead trembled slightly, leaves shivering as if something was moving through them without touching the ground.

The men who had been chasing her stepped back.

For the first time since she had seen them, they looked uncertain.

“Fall back,” one of them said quietly.

No one argued.

They were already moving.

Aria noticed.

And that scared her more than anything else.

If they were retreating…

Then whatever was coming was worse than them.

The Alpha stepped in front of her without thinking, his body placing itself between her and the forest ahead.

“Stay behind me,” he said.

Aria didn’t argue this time.

Not because she agreed.

Because her body had already decided.

The presence ahead pressed harder against her senses, sharper now, clearer.

Closer.

Her fingers curled as the heat inside her surged again, stronger than before, pushing against her ribs, climbing up her throat.

Her breathing became uneven.

“I can feel it,” she said.

His head tilted slightly, just enough to show he heard her.

“What does it feel like?”

Aria swallowed.

“Like it knows me.”

The words left her before she could stop them.

The moment they did, the air shifted.

The forest went still.

Completely.

Then something stepped out of the trees.

Aria’s breath stopped.

It was not a wolf.

Not fully.

Not human either.

Its form moved between both, unstable, like it had not decided what it wanted to be. Its eyes glowed faintly, not with the sharp light of a wolf, but something older.

Something wrong.

It looked at her.

Not at the Alpha.

Not at the others.

Her.

The heat inside her spiked violently.

Aria staggered back a step, her hand gripping her side as the force inside her twisted in response.

The creature tilted its head slightly.

Curious.

Recognizing.

The Alpha’s voice came low and controlled.

“Do not move.”

Aria didn’t think she could even if she tried.

Her legs felt locked.

Her chest too tight.

The creature took a step forward.

The ground beneath it did not sound right.

Too quiet.

Too smooth.

Like it wasn’t really touching it.

Aria’s heart pounded harder.

“What is that?” she whispered.

The Alpha didn’t answer immediately.

His body had gone completely still, his focus locked on the thing in front of them.

“Something that should have stayed buried,” he said finally.

Buried.

The word settled deep in her chest.

Because the thing inside her reacted to it.

Not with fear.

With recognition.

The creature stopped a few feet away.

Close enough for her to see the details.

Its skin looked wrong.

Not flesh.

Not fur.

Something in between.

Its eyes stayed on her.

Unblinking.

Waiting.

Aria’s breath came faster.

Her body felt like it was being pulled in two directions.

One part of her wanted to run.

The other…

Did not want to move at all.

“What do you want?” she asked, her voice barely steady.

The creature did not respond.

Not with words.

But something shifted.

Inside her.

A sudden pressure built in her chest, sharp and overwhelming.

Aria gasped, her knees weakening as the force surged upward, crashing against her ribs.

The heat exploded again.

Stronger than before.

Her vision flickered.

The forest blurred.

The creature moved.

Faster than anything she had seen.

The Alpha reacted instantly, stepping forward to intercept, his body blocking its path.

They collided.

The impact cracked through the clearing like thunder.

Aria stumbled back, her heart racing, her focus snapping between them as they moved.

The Alpha was fast.

Controlled.

Precise.

But the creature did not fight like anything she had seen.

It did not hesitate.

Did not react.

It simply moved.

Again.

And again.

Each strike was not wild.

It was direct.

Focused.

Like it knew exactly what it was doing.

Aria’s chest tightened.

This was not instinct.

This was purpose.

The fight pushed them back slightly, the ground tearing beneath their movements.

The Alpha struck hard, forcing the creature back a step.

For a second, it paused.

Then it looked past him.

At her.

The moment their eyes met, the world seemed to stop.

The heat inside her surged violently.

Her breath caught.

And something inside her answered.

Not by choice.

Not by thought.

By instinct.

The power in her chest moved.

Not outward.

Not uncontrolled.

Directed.

Toward it.

Aria gasped as the connection formed.

It was brief.

Sharp.

But real.

The creature froze.

Completely.

The Alpha noticed instantly.

His head snapped toward her.

“Aria.”

Her name sounded different coming from him this time.

Not controlled.

Not calm.

Warning.

She couldn’t respond.

The pressure inside her built rapidly, rising higher, pushing harder, like something was forcing its way through her.

“I can’t stop it,” she said, her voice breaking.

The Alpha moved toward her immediately.

“Break it.”

“I don’t know how.”

The connection snapped.

Violently.

The creature let out a sound.

Not a growl.

Not a howl.

Something deeper.

Something that echoed.

Aria’s body jerked as the force recoiled back into her, slamming into her chest like a shockwave.

She cried out, dropping to her knees as the pain hit.

The Alpha reached her instantly, his hand gripping her arm, pulling her upright before she could collapse completely.

“Stay with me,” he said.

Her vision blurred again.

“I didn’t do that,” she whispered.

“I know.”

But his expression said something else.

Something she didn’t understand yet.

Behind them, the creature moved again.

Faster now.

Angrier.

The brief connection had changed something.

It was no longer just watching.

Now it was reacting.

The Alpha turned slightly, his body shifting back into position, ready to face it again.

But this time, Aria felt it before it moved.

The thing inside her tightened sharply.

A warning.

“Wait,” she said suddenly, grabbing his arm.

He paused.

Just for a second.

“What?”

Her breath came fast.

“It’s not attacking you.”

His eyes narrowed slightly.

“It is.”

“No,” she said, shaking her head.

Her gaze lifted slowly to the creature.

“It’s coming for me.”

The words settled heavily between them.

The creature moved.

Not toward him.

Past him.

Straight toward her.

The Alpha reacted instantly, stepping into its path again.

But this time, it didn’t slow down.

It didn’t try to fight him.

It moved through him.

Not physically.

But like it had no interest in him at all.

Its focus never left her.

Aria’s heart slammed violently against her ribs.

Because now she understood.

This was not random.

This was not an accident.

This was not just something they had awakened.

It had come for her.

And it knew exactly who she was.

No one moved. Not even the wind dared to pass through the trees.Aria remained on her knees, her palms pressed lightly against the ground as if it were the only thing keeping her steady. Her breathing had slowed, but her body still felt unfamiliar, like something had shifted out of place and refused to return. The silence around her was not empty. It was watching.Waiting.The five figures no longer looked certain. The forest did not return to normal.Even after the creature disappeared, something remained. A pressure in the air. A silence that felt deliberate, as if everything around them was listening.Aria stood where she was, her body still unsteady, her breathing uneven as the heat inside her settled into something quieter. Not gone.Never gone.Just waiting. The Alpha had not stepped away. His presence was still close, still sharp, his attention fixed entirely on her in a way that made it impossible to ignore.“Show me,” he said.Aria blinked.“What?”His gaze dropped to her hand.“The mark.”Her fingers curled instinctively.“No.”The refusal came out quickly, almost defensive.Something in his expression shifted. Not anger.Something colder.“You don’t get to hide it now.”Her chest tightened.“I’ve been hiding my whole life.”“And that’s over.”The words hit harder than they should have.Aria shook her head, taking a step back.“You don’t decide that.”He didn’t move. But the space betw
