Chapter 4

作者: Sweet Tea Nini
Kyle's POV

Mom immediately retorted in embarrassment and anger, "What do you mean, your money? I paid for your food and clothes, so what's the big deal if I took some of your money? What an ingrate!"

That was different.

If our family were actually in financial trouble, I would've willingly contributed my money for emergencies.

But Mom had bought Kevin something he didn't really need.

I raised my voice. "You took it without asking me, so that's stealing! That's against the law!"

Natasha leaped up from her chair, pointing a finger in my face as she shouted, "Kyle, watch your mouth! What do you mean, stealing? She's our mother, for goodness' sake!"

Claire frowned as well. She said in her scolding tone, as she had always done to me, "Kyle, that's too extreme. You're family, so how can you call that stealing? Mrs. Winslow must have taken your money because she thinks it's not safe for a boy like you to have so much cash on hand.

"Moreover, Kev got into Whetford University, so it only makes sense for you to buy a congratulatory gift for your own brother!"

But it was my gift money that I had scrimped and saved for 18 whole years without spending even a single dime.

I had resisted the temptation to use any of it on toys, snacks, or even just a fancy beverage.

"Give it back." I stared at Mom, my eyes reddening. "Give me back my money."

Mom looked away guiltily, but she quickly doubled down. "I've spent it all! We've activated the phone, so we can't return it anymore! Also, with that horrible score of yours, you don't even have the right to have that much money in the first place!"

Kevin's eyes had reddened as he tugged at Mom's sleeve. "Mom, please stop arguing with Kyle. It's all my fault… Why don't we just sell the phone? I'll make up for the remaining amount with my gift money."

He said he would return the money, but he was subconsciously hiding the phone behind his back. I could tell from his tone that he didn't want to part with his new phone at all.

Mom immediately shielded him with her body, her heart aching for him. "Kyle, you've really gone too far this time! Go back to your room and reflect on your actions. You're not allowed to come out without my permission!"

Natasha stepped forward and dragged me toward my room.

"No! I didn't do anything wrong!" I struggled with all my might.

Claire was standing nearby, and she hastily grabbed my arm.

In the end, I was still dragged back to my room. The door slammed shut.

I leaned against the door and slowly slid to the floor.

On the other side of the door, I could hear voices comforting Mom and Kevin.

They were saying that Mom was right, and Kevin was innocent. They said I was the one in the wrong, and it was all my fault for being so selfish.

But Kevin had ten times the amount of gift money I had.

There was no reason for Mom to go behind my back and force me to sacrifice my money for him.

I curled up into a ball and wept quietly.

For the following week, to punish me for causing trouble, everyone pretended I didn't exist.

They didn't call me for dinner, and they always left the house without me.

They thought this would be torturous enough for me, and that I would apologize at the end of the day.

But I had been overlooked for the past 18 years. I was already used to being ignored.

Since there was still some time before the new semester began, I found a part-time job nearby.

No one cared when I went out or when I came home.

No one noticed that I was slowly removing every trace of myself in the house, either.

I recycled all my textbooks and scratch paper. The gifts Claire had given me and all the notes she had summarized for me were sent to a remote mountainous area.

After receiving the acceptance letter, I took one last look at my home.

When I was eight, I was forced to give up my room and had to move into our small storage room—all because Kevin needed a dedicated piano room for his practices.

The white walls of the house were decorated with nothing but Kevin's awards.

My awards were folded over and over, and in the end, they were shoved under a corner of a table to keep it from wobbling.

I didn't want to stay here any longer.

Grabbing my bags, I took a cab to the train station.

On my way there, I received countless calls. I figured they were urging me to attend the graduation party that was being held at the time.

I didn't answer a single one of them.

Kevin would be the only star of the show at the graduation party.

I didn't want to be a piece of background scenery as I listened to our relatives and friends taking turns to congratulate him, then shrug and try to humor me by saying half-heartedly, "Kyle got into college too, huh? That's great."

I blocked all their numbers, then boarded the train heading to Mallowpoint.

Once I left this place, I swore I would never see them again for the rest of my life.

Kyle's POVIn the blink of an eye, four years had passed. On the official posting for Mallowpoint College's direct-admission graduate fellowships, my name was displayed at the top of the Chemistry Department's list.Over the course of my graduate studies, I obtained every single academic award the university had to offer.I even published three papers as first author in SCI journals and worked with my advisor on federally funded major projects.I was no longer the ugly duckling who used to curl up in the storage room and eat leftovers just to beg for some love and attention from my parents.I had sprouted firm wings, traversed mountains and seas, and found a piece of the sky that belonged wholly to me.Now, my earnings from my part-time job were enough to pay for my tuition and living expenses.Sometimes, I could even afford an expensive seafood feast by the sea.I got the latest phone and bought many pairs of branded shoes.I was living the good life, a million times better

Kyle's POVI pretended I hadn't heard Natasha. Crouching down, I picked up the oranges and put them back in the plastic bag. Then, I looked up at her. "Consideration for what? I've been a good kid for 18 years, and the only thing I've done now is choose a college I like. What's wrong with that?"Natasha couldn't come up with an argument for that. Pointing at my face, she said in anger and embarrassment, "You're selfish and cruel! I knew it. You haven't been likable since you were young, and you've only gotten worse! "Kev can't even get himself to prepare for the new semester at Whetford University, and it's all because of you! How can you be okay with that?""That's his problem." With the fruits in hand, I headed upstairs even without a glance back. "Also, if you snatch my stuff again, I'm going to call the cops."Natasha shouted behind me, but in the end, she didn't come after me.…The third person to come over was Claire. It was a rainy weekend. I had just left the library

Kyle's POVThe first person to find me was Dad. He had gotten hold of my class schedule through the department advisor. As soon as the professor dismissed us, I walked out of the classroom to see Dad standing in the corridor. It had only been two months since we last met, but he seemed to have aged a decade. Most of his hair had turned gray, and he wasn't standing tall like he used to.The moment he caught sight of me, his eyes reddened as he strode forward to grab my hand. "Kyle! I finally found you!"I took a step backward, avoiding physical contact with him. "What are you doing here?"Dad's hand froze in mid-air. Then, he put on an appeasing smile. "Kyle, come home with me. Your mom is at home crying her eyes out every day, and Kev is also out of it. Our home is a mess now."I looked at him coldly. "What does that have to do with me?""How can you say something like that?" Panicking, Dad raised his voice. "It's your home, too! You… You left in a hurry and didn't bring all yo

Kyle's POVThe train swayed as it chugged toward the south. Rolling hills and lush greenery gradually replaced the northern plains outside the window.I leaned against the hard seat as I watched the scenery outside fly by. I felt a sense of relief I had never experienced before. It was as if I had pulled out a thorn that had been embedded in my heart for 18 years. It might have bled a little, but the inflammation had finally stopped.August in Mallowpoint was filled with the damp, briny scent of the sea breeze. As I exited the train with my luggage in tow, the student assigned to welcome the freshmen was already waiting. The student approached me and asked in a friendly tone, "Hi, are you a freshman? What's your major?" I answered, "Chemistry."The student whistled. "Whoa, we have a genius here! Come on, the campus shuttle is right this way!"Since I had arrived two weeks early, I managed to get approval for an early move-in.I was assigned to a four-person suite, and I cla

Third-Person POVMargaret snatched the paper. When she saw the glaring high score and the familiar ID numbers, she felt like she was about to faint. Her body swayed, threatening to fall.It was real. The son with "a score below 1200" she had carelessly insulted, whom she had said was "inferior to Kevin in every way", was actually the top scorer in their city!Meanwhile, the younger son she was so proud of had achieved SAT scores that looked almost ordinary compared to 1590.Even worse, she just told hundreds of relatives and friends that she wished she were only pregnant with her younger son back then. The whispers around her instantly turned into grating mockery.Someone said, "How biased can she be? She didn't even care that her other son is a top scorer!"Another responded, "She must've played favorites by tearing down her older son while putting her younger son on a pedestal. She must be regretting it now!"Another guest said, "Taking the top scorer's money just to buy a

Third-Person POVMeanwhile, in the ballroom on the top floor of Cloudview Hotel, everything gleamed in golden light as glasses clinked amid the chatter.Almost all the Winslows' relatives and acquaintances had attended the graduation party. The Winslow mom, Margaret Brooks, wore a dark red dress as she wove through the crowd, glowing with pride. Her husband, Jeffery Winslow, held a wineglass as he chatted with his business partners. He bragged to anyone who would listen about how successful his younger son had become."Winslow, your kid has been a shining example for his peers since he was young, and now, he's even made it into Whetford University. He has a bright future ahead of him!" A middle-aged man with a beer belly raised his glass as he complimented Kevin.Jeffery gleefully threw his head back and downed all the wine in his glass. "Oh, please, he deserves the credit for being so hardworking. As parents, we didn't even have to worry about him. We just did our best to provi
