Chapter 18: The Heir's Secret

The Council chamber was chaos.

Alphas from a dozen packs were shouting over one another, their voices echoing off the stone walls. Lord Marcus stood at the head of the table, looking older and more frail than he had since the Ashen Lands.

"The First Alpha is a myth!" one of the Northern Alphas bellowed, slamming his fist on the table. "Our ancestors used his story to frighten pups into obedience. He cannot be real!"

"The tomb is empty!" Vera shot back, pointing to the ancient scroll. "Or did the myth steal his own body?"

I sat beside Kael, my hand resting on my stomach beneath the table. The golden light inside me was still humming with unease, reacting to the lingering magic of the Blood Moon.

"Enough," Kael said. His voice wasn't loud, but it cut through the room like a blade. Every Alpha fell silent. "We don't have time to debate mythology. We need to fortify the borders and prepare for an attack."

"Prepare for what?" the Northern Alpha sneered. "An army of shadows?"

The doors to the chamber burst open. A young scout, covered in sweat and blood, stumbled into the room. He collapsed to one knee, gasping for air.

"Alpha," the scout choked out. "The eastern border... it's gone."

The room went deathly quiet.

"What do you mean, gone?" Kael demanded, standing up.

"We didn't even see them coming," the scout stammered, his eyes wide with terror. "They weren't wolves. They were... shadows. Creatures made of smoke and black fire. They tore through the outer patrols in minutes. The warriors... they didn't just die. They were consumed."

A cold, suffocating silence fell over the chamber.

I stood up, my chair scraping against the stone floor.

"Send word to every pack within a hundred miles," I commanded, my voice ringing with authority. "Evacuate the outer settlements. Bring everyone inside the fortress walls. We don't have time to argue about myths. The First Alpha is real, and he's testing our defenses."

The Alphas scrambled to obey, their arrogance replaced by sheer panic.

As the chamber emptied, Kael grabbed my arm and pulled me into a side corridor. His golden eyes were wild with fear.

"Consumed," he repeated, his voice shaking. "These aren't normal enemies, Elara. They aren't rogues. They're something else entirely. And they're coming for you."

I reached up, cupping his face in my hands. The warmth of the blood oath pulsed between us, steady and strong.

"Kael," I said softly. "I need to tell you something."

"Not now," he said, trying to pull away. "We need to prepare the defenses."

"Kael, stop." I held his gaze. "I'm pregnant."

He froze. The world seemed to stop spinning. His eyes dropped to my stomach, then back to my face.

"What?" he whispered, his voice breaking.

"I've suspected for a few weeks," I said, my own eyes filling with tears. "I wanted to wait until the healer confirmed it, but I know. I can feel it through the bond. A new life. Our child."

Kael let out a choked sound that was somewhere between a laugh and a sob. He pulled me into his arms, crushing me against his chest. I felt his shoulders shake.

"A child," he breathed into my hair. "You're carrying my child."

"Our child," I corrected gently.

He pulled back, his hands trembling as he placed them on my stomach. The fierce, terrifying Alpha was gone, replaced by a man terrified of the future.

"You have to leave," he said suddenly, his eyes hardening. "I'll send you to the Southern Isles. They're protected by ancient wards. You'll be safe there while I deal with the First Alpha."

"No," I said flatly.

"Elara, I am not arguing about this—"

"And I am not leaving you," I interrupted, my voice sharp. "If I run, I lose my power. I lose my authority. And if the First Alpha wants me, he will tear apart every territory until he finds me. Our only chance is to face him together."

Kael looked at me, his jaw clenched. He knew I was right.

Before he could argue, a massive boom shook the fortress. The stone walls vibrated. Dust rained from the ceiling.

We ran back into the main hall. Through the massive windows, I saw it.

A tidal wave of black smoke was rolling toward the fortress, blotting out the crimson Blood Moon. And riding at the front of the shadow army was a figure clad in ancient black armor, his eyes burning like hellfire.

The First Alpha had arrived.

Kael grabbed my hand, his grip iron-tight.

"Together," he said.

"Together," I echoed.

The darkness was alive. As we rode out of the Blackwood gates, the shadows didn't just block the light; they clawed at us. They had form now—long, skeletal fingers of black smoke that reached out from the treeline to snatch at our horses' legs.I rode at the center of the formation, my golden light radiating outward in a protective bubble. Vera and the elite guard flanked us, their swords drawn, cutting down any shadow that breached the barrier.Kael rode beside me, his eyes scanning the darkness. "How much further?""The Frozen Peak is a day's ride north," I shouted over the howling wind. "But we can't ride all the way. The terrain gets too steep."We pushed the horses hard. The unnatural darkness made it impossible to tell time. There was no sun, no moon, only the crimson glow of the Blood Moon occasionally peeking through the thick clouds of shadow.By the time we reached the base of the Frozen Peak, the horses were exhausted, their breath misting in the freezing air.We dismounted

The Silver Creek warriors didn't move. The silver-haired woman—who I vaguely remembered as a distant cousin of Jason’s—sneered at me. "You think your parlor tricks scare us? You're still the same weak omega who ran away with her tail between her legs."Kael growled, stepping forward, but I placed a hand on his chest."Let me," I said softly.I looked at the warriors. I didn't feel anger. I felt pity. They were clinging to a past that had already crumbled to dust.I reached into the golden well of my power, not to attack, but to command. I let a fraction of the Moon Goddess's authority bleed into the room. The temperature dropped. The air grew heavy. The silver-haired woman gasped, her knees buckling. She hit the stone floor, her eyes wide with terror. Behind her, the other warriors collapsed, their weapons clattering to the ground."I am not the weak omega you remember," I said, my voice echoing with divine resonance. "I am the High Priestess. And I am your only chance at survival."I

Dawn broke over Blackwood, revealing the true cost of the battle. The courtyard was a graveyard of ash and shattered stone. We had lost twelve warriors. Dozens more were wounded. The healers worked tirelessly, their hands glowing with soft green light as they tended to the injured.I stood on the balcony, looking out at the destruction. My hand rested on my stomach, a protective instinct I couldn't control. The baby was quiet now, the massive surge of power from last night completely drained.Kael stepped out onto the balcony, a heavy fur draped over his shoulders. He wrapped it around me, pulling me close."The Council is demanding answers," he murmured. "They want to know what the Twin Flame is.""So do I," I admitted. "The First Alpha called it the 'ultimate balance of light and dark.' But I don't know what that means.""We need to find out before he attacks again," Kael said, his voice hard. "He won't retreat forever."A sudden memory sparked in my mind. My mother. She had been th

The shadow army hit the fortress walls like a battering ram.I stood on the main battlements, Kael at my side, as the black tide crashed against the ancient stone. The creatures weren't wolves. They were faceless, shifting masses of smoke and dark magic, their claws leaving jagged, frostbitten scars on the stone."Archers, fire!" Vera roared.A volley of silver-tipped arrows rained down, but the arrows passed straight through the shadows, doing nothing. The creatures didn't even slow down."They're immune to physical weapons!" I shouted."Then use your light!" Kael yelled, drawing his sword and leaping off the battlement into the thick of the fight.I closed my eyes, reaching for the golden well inside my chest. I pushed it outward, a massive wave of divine light cascading down the fortress walls. The shadows hit the light and shrieked—a sound like tearing metal—as they disintegrated into ash.For a moment, we had the upper hand. The Blackwood warriors cheered, pushing back the dark t

Three months had passed since the night I became High Priestess. The Blackwood territory was unrecognizable. The once-rugged fortress was now the central hub of the werewolf world. A new Council had been formed, one where Alphas ruled alongside their Lunas, and the old laws of oppression were burned to ash.But peace, I was learning, was a fragile thing.I stood on the balcony of our bedroom, watching the sun set over the mountains. My hand rested on my stomach, a small, secret smile playing on my lips. I hadn't told Kael yet. I wanted to wait until the healer confirmed it, but I knew. The mate bond had felt different for weeks. There was a new, tiny heartbeat pulsing alongside ours."Daydreaming again?"I turned as Kael stepped onto the balcony. He wrapped his arms around me from behind, pulling me flush against his chest."Just enjoying the quiet," I said, leaning my head back against his shoulder."Enjoy it while it lasts," he murmured, pressing a kiss to my neck. "Vera said the de
