Chapter 6: The Luna's Claim

The walk back to the Blackwood packhouse was nothing like the first time.

Before, I had been a bleeding, broken omega draped over Kael’s arms, surrounded by hostile stares. Now, I walked on my own two feet, wrapped in Kael’s leather jacket, with the Alpha himself holding my hand.

The pack gathered in the main hall. Vera was standing near the front, her face a mask of complicated emotions. As I passed her, she didn't sneer. She didn't even look at me with hatred. Instead, she lowered her head, baring her neck in a gesture of absolute submission.

The rest of the pack followed. One by one, they dropped their gazes, bowing as we walked toward the staircase.

"Do you see that, Elara?" Kael murmured, his thumb tracing circles on the back of my hand. "They aren't bowing to me. They are bowing to you. You saved them from a war tonight."

"They were terrified of me," I whispered back.

"Good," Kael said, his voice hardening. "A Luna should be respected. Fear is a good starting point. Loyalty will come next."

He didn't stop at the guest room where I had woken up. He led me up another flight of stairs, down a long, quiet hallway, and pushed open a set of heavy oak double doors.

Kael’s bedroom was massive. A huge bed dominated the center of the room, draped in dark furs. A fire roared in the hearth, casting dancing shadows on the stone walls.

"It's late," he said, closing the door behind us. The click of the lock sounded deafening in the quiet room. "You need to rest. Your body is still healing from the awakening."

I stood by the fire, suddenly hyper-aware of the fact that I was wearing nothing but his shirt and his jacket. The mate bond, which had been a dull hum in the background, was now pulling tight, demanding my attention.

"Where will you sleep?" I asked, my voice barely a whisper.

Kael walked toward me, his steps slow and deliberate. He stopped right in front of me, the heat from his body washing over me.

"Here," he said. "With you."

My breath caught. I looked up at him, meeting those piercing gold eyes. "I just got out of a bond, Kael. I'm not ready to—"

"I'm not asking for that," he interrupted softly. He reached up, his fingers gently brushing the hair away from my face. "I told you, Elara. I waited ten years for you. I can wait a little longer for you to trust me. But I will not let you out of my sight. Jason is stupid enough to try something desperate, and I won't risk your safety."

He leaned down, his face inches from mine. The scent of pine and snow filled my senses, making my wolf whine with pleasure.

"I just want to hold you," he murmured, his lips ghosting over mine. "I want to feel your heartbeat against my chest. I want to know that you are finally mine."

I should have pushed him away. I should have demanded my own space. But the pull of the mate bond was too strong, and the truth was, I didn't want to be alone. For the first time in my life, I felt safe.

I closed the distance between us, pressing my lips to his.

It wasn't a gentle kiss. It was a claiming. Kael growled low in his chest, his hands tangling in my hair as he deepened the kiss, plundering my mouth with a possessive, desperate hunger. I melted into him, my fingers gripping the fabric of his shirt. The bond between us flared to life, a golden thread tying our souls together.

When we finally broke apart, we were both breathing hard.

"Sleep," Kael said, his voice rough with restraint.

He led me to the massive bed and pulled back the furs. I climbed in, and he slid in beside me, pulling me against his chest. His arms wrapped around me like a cage, but it was the safest cage I had ever known.

Just as my eyes closed, a sharp knock echoed through the room.

Kael stiffened, a low, dangerous growl vibrating in his chest. "What?"

The door cracked open, and Vera's voice filtered through, tight with urgency.

"Alpha. A messenger just arrived from the High Council. Alpha Jason has already filed a formal complaint. The Council is demanding an emergency summit in three days. They want to see the 'Silver Creek Abomination' for themselves. If she doesn't show, they will declare her a rogue and put a bounty on her head."

Kael's arms tightened around me, his body turning to solid stone.

"Let them try," he whispered.

The darkness was alive. As we rode out of the Blackwood gates, the shadows didn't just block the light; they clawed at us. They had form now—long, skeletal fingers of black smoke that reached out from the treeline to snatch at our horses' legs.I rode at the center of the formation, my golden light radiating outward in a protective bubble. Vera and the elite guard flanked us, their swords drawn, cutting down any shadow that breached the barrier.Kael rode beside me, his eyes scanning the darkness. "How much further?""The Frozen Peak is a day's ride north," I shouted over the howling wind. "But we can't ride all the way. The terrain gets too steep."We pushed the horses hard. The unnatural darkness made it impossible to tell time. There was no sun, no moon, only the crimson glow of the Blood Moon occasionally peeking through the thick clouds of shadow.By the time we reached the base of the Frozen Peak, the horses were exhausted, their breath misting in the freezing air.We dismounted

The Silver Creek warriors didn't move. The silver-haired woman—who I vaguely remembered as a distant cousin of Jason’s—sneered at me. "You think your parlor tricks scare us? You're still the same weak omega who ran away with her tail between her legs."Kael growled, stepping forward, but I placed a hand on his chest."Let me," I said softly.I looked at the warriors. I didn't feel anger. I felt pity. They were clinging to a past that had already crumbled to dust.I reached into the golden well of my power, not to attack, but to command. I let a fraction of the Moon Goddess's authority bleed into the room. The temperature dropped. The air grew heavy. The silver-haired woman gasped, her knees buckling. She hit the stone floor, her eyes wide with terror. Behind her, the other warriors collapsed, their weapons clattering to the ground."I am not the weak omega you remember," I said, my voice echoing with divine resonance. "I am the High Priestess. And I am your only chance at survival."I

Dawn broke over Blackwood, revealing the true cost of the battle. The courtyard was a graveyard of ash and shattered stone. We had lost twelve warriors. Dozens more were wounded. The healers worked tirelessly, their hands glowing with soft green light as they tended to the injured.I stood on the balcony, looking out at the destruction. My hand rested on my stomach, a protective instinct I couldn't control. The baby was quiet now, the massive surge of power from last night completely drained.Kael stepped out onto the balcony, a heavy fur draped over his shoulders. He wrapped it around me, pulling me close."The Council is demanding answers," he murmured. "They want to know what the Twin Flame is.""So do I," I admitted. "The First Alpha called it the 'ultimate balance of light and dark.' But I don't know what that means.""We need to find out before he attacks again," Kael said, his voice hard. "He won't retreat forever."A sudden memory sparked in my mind. My mother. She had been th

The shadow army hit the fortress walls like a battering ram.I stood on the main battlements, Kael at my side, as the black tide crashed against the ancient stone. The creatures weren't wolves. They were faceless, shifting masses of smoke and dark magic, their claws leaving jagged, frostbitten scars on the stone."Archers, fire!" Vera roared.A volley of silver-tipped arrows rained down, but the arrows passed straight through the shadows, doing nothing. The creatures didn't even slow down."They're immune to physical weapons!" I shouted."Then use your light!" Kael yelled, drawing his sword and leaping off the battlement into the thick of the fight.I closed my eyes, reaching for the golden well inside my chest. I pushed it outward, a massive wave of divine light cascading down the fortress walls. The shadows hit the light and shrieked—a sound like tearing metal—as they disintegrated into ash.For a moment, we had the upper hand. The Blackwood warriors cheered, pushing back the dark t

The Council chamber was chaos.Alphas from a dozen packs were shouting over one another, their voices echoing off the stone walls. Lord Marcus stood at the head of the table, looking older and more frail than he had since the Ashen Lands."The First Alpha is a myth!" one of the Northern Alphas bellowed, slamming his fist on the table. "Our ancestors used his story to frighten pups into obedience. He cannot be real!""The tomb is empty!" Vera shot back, pointing to the ancient scroll. "Or did the myth steal his own body?"I sat beside Kael, my hand resting on my stomach beneath the table. The golden light inside me was still humming with unease, reacting to the lingering magic of the Blood Moon."Enough," Kael said. His voice wasn't loud, but it cut through the room like a blade. Every Alpha fell silent. "We don't have time to debate mythology. We need to fortify the borders and prepare for an attack.""Prepare for what?" the Northern Alpha sneered. "An army of shadows?"The doors to t

Three months had passed since the night I became High Priestess. The Blackwood territory was unrecognizable. The once-rugged fortress was now the central hub of the werewolf world. A new Council had been formed, one where Alphas ruled alongside their Lunas, and the old laws of oppression were burned to ash.But peace, I was learning, was a fragile thing.I stood on the balcony of our bedroom, watching the sun set over the mountains. My hand rested on my stomach, a small, secret smile playing on my lips. I hadn't told Kael yet. I wanted to wait until the healer confirmed it, but I knew. The mate bond had felt different for weeks. There was a new, tiny heartbeat pulsing alongside ours."Daydreaming again?"I turned as Kael stepped onto the balcony. He wrapped his arms around me from behind, pulling me flush against his chest."Just enjoying the quiet," I said, leaning my head back against his shoulder."Enjoy it while it lasts," he murmured, pressing a kiss to my neck. "Vera said the de
