Victoria

I know he’s coming before he knocks. The wards recognize him and shiver in anticipation. That subtle curl of welcome that comes from attunement, even unspoken. Even if it believes it’s unwilling.

I breathe in and let the mirror tell me what I already know. Erik is standing outside, one hand in his jacket pocket, the other rubbing the back of his neck like this isn’t exactly where he planned to be.

But it’s where he is. Because he wants to see me. I smile to myself, sure it’s only a matter of time before he’s mine.

When I open the door, I make sure I’m bathed in afternoon light. It falls through the curtains just right, catching the copper highlights in my hair and casting my skin in a gentle warmth that doesn’t require illusion, just timing.

Magic can enhance beauty, yes. But knowing when not to use it? That’s power too. I’ve always been gorgeous, that’s not what I need to tempt Erik.

He looks tired. Tense. Guarded. Like he’s wary of me. I’ll make sure to be gentle with him.

ErikVictoria meets me at the edge of the square, dressed in tight black pants and a deep green blouse that clings in a way that’s probably intentional.“Nice of you to show,” she says, smiling at me like we’re in on a private joke.I gesture toward the warded clearing behind the building. “You wanted help with control. Let’s get to it.” Her smile dims just a little. I don’t want to hurt her, but she needs to know that I’m not falling for her tricks. The wards are basic, but solid. I reinforced them yesterday, so if anything goes sideways, it will stay contained.Victoria steps into the circle. “I’ve been practicing,” she tells me with a flirtatious smile. I suspect she’s undone one of the buttons on her blouse since I turned my back and the lace of her bra is peeking out.“Great. Show me what you can do.” I ignore the other theatrics. She closes her eyes and lifts her hands. The power hums through the clearing, slow and tentative. It gathers at her fingertips in a haze of gold that f

ScarlettI wake up soaked in sweat. Not the kind that comes from nightmares, all sharp teeth and screaming. This is much worse. This is the kind that clings to skin after a dream you didn’t want to end. One that leaves your heart hammering and your thighs pressed together like you’re still chasing the ghost of a feeling that shouldn’t have been there in the first place.I sit up in bed, the sheets twisted around my legs. Erik’s next to me, fast asleep, his hand still resting over where my hip was a second ago. There’s a soft frown between his brows, like he’s sensing something even in his sleep.I press a kiss to his forehead, slide out of bed, and pad into the bathroom. I need air. Space. Maybe a cold shower. This isn’t the first night I’ve woken wet and needy, with Loki’s voice stroking my mind to a fever pitch. I feel hot and dirty all at the same time. I can’t help what I dream, but it still feels like I’m being unfaithful. The mirror over the sink is fogged slightly from my panti

LokiMortals are deliciously messy creatures.I watch her from the shadows, perched atop a crooked ironwork balcony that nobody ever looks up at.Scarlett. Golden veins lit like dawn beneath her skin, and that delicious edge of defiance in every movement. She reminds me of fire on the verge of becoming a storm. She has no idea yet of the violence she’s capable of. The ferocity passed down to her from her mother and father. Warriors worthy of their rank.Victoria was a temporary spark. A useful pawn. Pretty, yes. Hungry, yes. But the wrong kind of hungry. A grabby, short-sighted kind of hunger that would never be sated and never really accomplish anything.Scarlett, though? Scarlett is starved. And she doesn’t even know it yet. She’s magnificent. Perfect. Everything I could want and then some.I let the dream settle first. Just a hint. A whisper. A suggestion curled into silk and smoke. Her magic is already opening like a flower after frost, ready to drink up the sun. The fact that I’m

ScarlettI should stop. The thought crosses my mind as the runes under my feet flicker like dying stars. My breath comes in fast bursts, sweat sliding down my spine. Aunt Cerelia watches from across the training circle, arms folded, her face set like carved marble.“Again,” she says. I grit my teeth, roll my shoulders back, and lift my hands. The air thickens. Magic flares under my skin. Bright, hot, coiled like a live wire beneath my ribs. I speak the incantation slowly, trying to tether it.The sigils drawn in chalk around me tremble. I can feel the power pushing outward, not asking, not obeying. Demanding. And then it surges.A shockwave bursts from my chest. The circle shatters. Stones crack. The iron bowl Cerelia had placed on the edge spins violently and slams into the wall. The candles flicker and go out.I lower my hands, heart hammering. My skin glows faintly, light pulsing through my veins in golden strands. It doesn’t hurt. It doesn’t even burn anymore. It’s just part of me

VictoriaThe power surges again. It comes without warning, without rhythm. One second I’m standing in the narrow corridor between my flat and the stairwell, and the next, the air ripples around me like a heat mirage. It shudders against the wards I didn’t set. I don’t know how they got there. I only know that since the silver coin flared in my hand, nothing has felt stable. Not my dreams. Not my power. Not me.My fingertips spark with light. It flickers violet and deep gold, lashing against the walls like an angry snake. I clench my hands and press them against the cool stone.“Stop,” I whisper. “Not yet. Not now. I’ll call you when I need you.” It takes almost a full minute for the magic to settle. Like an angry street cat cornered and bribed with meat.I wipe sweat from my brow, scowling at the mirror hanging in the hallway, and try not to flinch when my own reflection doesn’t move in time with me.There’s something behind my eyes now. A shimmer. A hunger. Something watching and wai

SigneI can feel the city humming under my skin in a way it’s never done before. It’s a taut, straining kind of energy. The magical equivalent of a building holding its breath in the second before collapse.I should be used to it by now. Wards flickering. Spells going slippery around the edges. But this morning it’s different. The pressure isn’t just around the shop. It’s in it.I light the blue taper in the northern window, scattering powdered rowan bark across the threshold. The wards flare. Then dim. I swear under my breath.Whatever's pressing in from outside, it's learning. That’s not a good thing.Cerelia arrives not long after, eyes sharp, coat still dusted with dew from the walk over. She doesn’t bother with greetings. Just sets her satchel on the counter and says, “He left something again.”There’s no need to ask who he is. Loki’s not making any effort to hide his presence anymore. Instead, I open the satchel. It’s not a coin this time. It’s a length of silver wire braided in
