The search began before dawn.

Aria learned of it only through the changes in the house. More messengers. Longer closed-door conversations. Silas absent from the morning training slot and replaced by a competent but silent second who offered no information and accepted none.

By midday the pattern was clear. Dominic was turning the city for a name.

Aria spent the hours in the permitted spaces of the inner wing under continuous escort. The walls had not moved, but the air inside them felt thinn

The place the woman took them to was not safe in any lasting sense. It was a low storage loft above a shuttered chandlery. Reached by a ladder that pulled up behind them. A second exit onto a neighboring roof if the street side failed. The air smelled of old rope, tar, and dust that had not been disturbed in months. One shaded lamp. One barred window facing an interior court rather than the open docks. Lucien checked both exits before he let his shoulders drop. Aria stood in the center of the floor with river water still seeping from the seams of her clothes and waited. The woman set a battered metal flask on the crate that passed for a table and looked at her directly. “Your mother’s name was Elira.” “Not the surname the orphanage lists used. The one that made certain houses rewrite their private tallies when they heard it spoken in the wrong rooms.” The name hit Aria with no soft landing. Elira. A sound from a life before memory had been trained into strategy. The woman c

The second set of lights did not belong to Dominic Vale. Aria knew it in the first sweep of the beams. The pattern was different. Wider spacing. Less interest in quiet containment. More interest in controlling the whole river section at once. Voices carried. Sharper. Less clipped than Vale unit discipline. Lucien’s hand closed once around her wrist in warning, then released. Above them, on the ferry stairs, the first unit reacted immediately. Radio traffic spiked. Positions shifted. Two groups that had not planned to share the same ground were suddenly aware of each other. “Hold the lower line,” someone from the Vale side ordered. A different voice answered from the waterline. “You’re outside your clean jurisdiction, Vale. The girl is not only your problem.” Aria’s stomach dropped. They were not speaking in generalities. They were speaking about her. Lucien’s mouth barely moved. “Nightshade colors in the second group. Not Kael himself. Close enough to matter.” The under-

The tunnel narrowed until they had to move single file. The woman led. Aria followed. Lucien took the rear, attention split between their path and the sounds that occasionally carried from the sealed routes behind them. Water slicked the lower curve of the walls. The river’s voice was no longer a distant suggestion. It was a continuous presence pressing through the stone. They did not stop until the passage opened into a wider maintenance chamber. Two exits. A rusted grated floor over a deeper runoff channel. Only then did the woman turn. “We have minutes, not hours.” “So you get the spine of it. Not the full archive.” Aria stood with her weight balanced, ready to move again at the first hard sound from the tunnels. “Then give me the spine.” The woman’s eyes held hers. “Your mother was not ordinary unclaimed stock from the orphanage sector.” “She came from a line that high-status houses preferred to keep off open records. Not because the line was weak. Because it was inconv

The black vehicle completed its turn into the square as if it had all the time in the world. Lucien shifted half a step so his shoulder covered more of Aria’s angle. The figure near the clock did not look toward the car. Their attention stayed on Aria. “You can stay and explain yourselves to Vale’s people,” the figure said. “Or you can come with me through the service arch before the square finishes closing.” A pause. “Choose now.” Aria’s eyes adjusted to the thinning light. The speaker was a woman. Not young. Not old enough for the weight in her voice to be only age. Dark coat. Hair pulled back without ornament. The kind of face that did not ask to be remembered and therefore was. Something in Aria’s chest pulled tight. Not full recognition. Not yet. But the edge of it. A shape from before the Vale name. Before the gathering. Before the second life had fully hardened into strategy. Lucien’s voice was barely sound. “Aria.” The vehicle’s doors opened. Two men stepped out wi

Daylight made the city honest. It also made hiding harder. Lucien kept them moving through districts where ordinary work created cover. Early market loaders. Shift changes at the river warehouses. The gray flow of people who had reasons not to look too long at strangers. Aria stayed half a step behind his shoulder. Hair tied back. Posture adjusted to look like someone with a destination rather than someone being hunted. Twice they changed direction because a black vehicle lingered too long at a corner. Once they ducked into a crowded transit stair because a man with the wrong kind of stillness was studying faces from a café window. Dominic’s net was not loud. It was thorough. By midday they had put the warehouse belt behind them. The older river streets lay ahead. The air changed near the water — damper, edged with fuel and wet rope. The old transit clock stood three blocks inland from the main docks. A tall iron structure whose faces no longer agreed with one another. They

They left the print-shop rooms while the sky was still a hard, pre-morning dark. Lucien went first down the rear stair, checked the alley in both directions, and only then motioned Aria forward. The air outside was cold enough to bite. Distant warehouse lights hummed. Somewhere a delivery truck reverse-beeped and then fell silent. No immediate sign of the black unmarked vehicles from the night before. That did not mean the net was gone. It only meant it had not closed on this particular street yet. They moved on foot through a lattice of service lanes and shuttered loading courts. Lucien kept them off the wider roads, using the kind of paths people used when they did not want their names attached to cameras. Aria matched his timing, breath steady, senses stretched for any break in the ordinary night noise. After twenty minutes he stopped under the overhang of a closed textile warehouse and spoke without looking at her. “The contact uses a marker system. If the old sign is still
