Chapter 30

Dolores arrived at the boutique a few minutes before opening time. The familiar scent of new fabrics, soft perfume, and freshly brewed coffee greeted her like an automatic reflex of the life she knew so well.

"Good morning!" she greeted the saleswomen, forcing a professional smile.

"Good morning, ma'am!" they replied almost in unison.

She walked through the hall, observing the impeccable display windows, the perfectly dressed mannequins, everything exactly as it should be. Everything under control. At least there.

He looked up as soon as she entered.

"Good morning, André."

"Good morning, boss," he replied, hesitant, trying to figure out if she was okay... or just going through the motions.

Dolores placed her purse on the desk, took off her coat, and hung it on the chair. Her

Chapter 58In the big house, the silence of the early morning wrapped around everything.Zacky slept deeply, exhausted. The day had been heavy—work piling up since the time he had to be away from the ranch, difficult decisions, responsibilities that only kept growing. His body finally demanded its price, and sleep overtook him as soon as his head touched the pillow.Dolores woke up in the middle of the night. It wasn’t a nightmare. It was the soft, persistent sound of drizzle tapping against the roof and the windows. She lay there for a few moments with her eyes open, listening. Beside her, Zacky breathed deeply, in a calm rhythm that reassured her.She slowly ran her hand over her belly, feeling the baby move gently, as if also awake, attentive to the world. A serene smile appeared on her lips. The light rain continued outside, washing the earth, carrying away worries they didn’t always know how to name. Dolores sighed softly, turned carefully, and snuggled closer to her husband, see

  • Rejected by the Cowboy   Chapter 57

Chapter 57Dolores was in the bedroom, facing the open window. She ran her hand over her rounded belly, feeling the warmth of the life growing inside her. There was a sweet tightness in her chest. She couldn’t explain it, but she felt that something important had been done that day.She heard footsteps behind her. Zacky appeared silently and wrapped his arms around her from behind, resting his chin on her shoulder. His large hands caressed her belly."You did the right thing," he murmured gently. "That girl needed someone who truly saw her."Dolores leaned her head against his chest, closing her eyes."I felt that too," she replied softly. "Sometimes, helping is all we can do… and all someone needs."Zacky kissed her hair tenderly."Our son will grow up seeing this," he said. "That we don’t turn our backs when we can make a difference."She smiled, moved, keeping her hand over her belly, while outside the farm slept in peace.---Meanwhile, a few drops began to fall from the previousl

Chapter 56Andréia felt her chest tighten."Who are you? Where did you come from?" she asked, her voice low and wary."I’m Dolores," she replied calmly. "I came to see if you’re happy here… or if you need help getting out."Andréia let out a short, joyless laugh."Is this a joke?""No," Dolores sighed sincerely. "I’m very serious."Silence. Andréia placed her hand on her belly again, this time without trying to hide it."Who is the baby’s father?" Dolores asked gently."Mine alone," she answered immediately, lifting her chin. "The father didn’t want to know. He said this child wasn’t his problem."Dolores felt a tightness in her heart but kept her voice steady."And you… do you want to stay here?"Andréia looked away, fixing her gaze on the peeling wall."No. I never wanted to. But I had nowhere else to go. At least here I have food and a roof over my head." She swallowed hard. "But it’s not a life. Not for me… and not for him."Dolores stepped a little closer."Then listen to me care

I don’t know whether I should be worried or not.""Then tell me what happened."He hesitated for a moment, unsure whether he should go into that subject, but he had already started. He told her everything. Dolores remained silent, thoughtful, absorbing every detail."If she was scared, the way he noticed, he should have talked to her," she said at last. "Asked how she ended up there...""I don’t know, Dolores. That’s not a place for a young woman.""I know, Zacky. But sometimes life’s circumstances don’t leave any other choice.""In this life there are always choices.""I know that too," she replied gently. "But in desperation, those choices don’t always appear clearly."He gave her a quick kiss and left, saying he was going to harvest corn and wouldn’t be back until the afternoon. As soon as she was alone, Dolores raised an eyebrow, clearly determined to ge

Chapter 54They were both exhausted. He moved out of her, a final hoarse sigh escaping them both, and settled next to her. In an almost unconscious gesture, he pulled her close, his arm heavy over her waist in a drowsy possession."It was really good," he murmured, the words thick with fatigue and alcohol. He let out a yawn before closing his eyes.He fell asleep almost instantly. She could tell by the change in his breathing, which became deeper and more regular, and by the dead weight of his arm around her.She had liked it too. Liked it in a way that frightened her, that made a pang of regret bloom in her chest. Because the morning, relentless, would come. He would leave, pay, and disappear through the door, becoming a memory. And she would have to get up, recompose herself, and face the harsh reality: he had only been the first.
